Chapter 209
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 59: Theo I wasnât even going to consider this conversation. It was pure nonsense. But whoever was coming after us, they were getting closer. And smarter. I needed Hawkins to talk.
âIf this is so concerning to you, why not come to me or my father? Why skulk around behind our back?â I asked.
âYou wouldnât have listened,â he said. âSheâs marked you, Alpha. You wonât listen to reason now.â
âAnd what reason is that?â I ground out, trying hard to maintain control. âWhat was her father trying to accomplish by making her my Luna?â
Hawkins shook his head. âThey want to take control. She wants to get rid of all the Alphas. To become queen.â
I ran a hand over my face, pinching the bridge of my nose. âDo you know how ridiculous you sound?â I said.
âI said you wouldnât listen,â Hawkins replied.
âIf this was true, why me?â I asked. âWhy the Greytooth Pack? Weâre far from the most powerful pack. We may have one of the biggest territories but there are several other packs that outnumber us. Not to mention resources. So, why me?â
Hawkins made a face. âThat... Iâm not sure about,â he admitted. âHowever, your family is one of the most respected. Your line of Alphas is long and wellâestablished. You have more allies than most of the other packs. That would give her access to a lot of trust.â
0.00%
âOkay, Hawkins,â I said. âLetâs say you werenât blatantly committing treason against your Alpha. For now, letâs say I believe you.â
Briggs gave me a burning look, but I ignored it. âWho has given you all of this information? Who are you working with?â
Hawkins grimaced. âI canât tell you, sir.â
âI can make you tell me, Hawkins,â I insisted. And if I couldnât, that would mean he was under the command and Ayla could break that.
âNo, thatâs just it,â he said. âI donât have a name. He is very secretive. Iâ ve never actually seen his face.â
âThen why trust him over me? Over my father? You want me to listen to what you call reason, but you have nothing to go on.â
âI have evidence,â he said. âI have research. Anything you want to know, I can get you.â
I looked to Briggs, nodding for him to step outside with me.
âDonât move,â I commanded Hawkins and his mate.
Briggs followed me outside where I immediately started to take deep breathes.
âYou donât actually believe this, do you?â he linked me. We still couldnât risk them overhearing our conversation.
âOf course I donât,â I snapped back. âAll of this is ridiculous. Itâs a ploy to turn our pack members against Ayla. But if Hawkins thinks we believe him, even a little, it could give us another angle to get to the Waar Pak.â
âTrue, but itâs going to be difficult,â Briggs said. âHeâs not going to by that you accept him at his word. You two donât have the greatest track record.â
âNo, it wonât,â I said. âBut if heâs being honest about believing heâs protecting us, then he will eventually.â
âDo you really think heâs telling the truth about that?â Briggs asked. âOr do you think this is an opportunity for him?â
âBoth,â I said. âBut Hawkins isnât powerâhungry. He wants respect, and to be the smartest person in the room. Iâm not surprised that they got to him. If he believes he has some special, secret information about anything, heâs going to cling to it. But Iâm hoping we can use that against them, just like they tried to.â
Briggs nodded in agreement.
âIn the meantime, Iâm calling McCabe back up here,â I said. âI want him to be the acting sheriff for the time being. I donât want to trust anyone already established in the force.â
âAgreed.â
We went back inside. I was feeling more calm. I felt more worry than anger. I sat back down on the couch, keeping my expression unreadable.
âI want all the information you have,â I stated. âYou will be stripped of your position and both of you will be on house arrest until I say otherwise.â
âBut, sir...â
âBe glad youâre not dead where you sit,â I snarled. âWhether you agree with it or not, regardless of whatever you believe about her, as of right now, Ayla is my mate and your Luna. Whatever good deed you believed you were doing is moot. So, until I get to the bottom of this, Vouchers you will be under constant guard. Is that understood?â
âYes, Alpha,â they both said in unison.
We left the house and I called a few warriors to come stand guard. I checked in with Jimmy. They were able to grab a few of the attendees. I told him to take them to the precinct. We still didnât know how serious their involvement was. I didnât want them tipping the Waar Pak off about our investigation if we were forced to let anyone go.
I climbed back into my car and put my head in my hands.
âWhat the f*ck is going on, Briggs?â I said. âHow do we fight this?â
âThe same way we have been, man,â he said with a sigh.
He was quiet for a moment and I could tell there was something on his mind.
âWhat is it?â
He made a face. âIâm not sure,â he said with a shrug. âThere are just some more things that donât add up. Maybe Randy can help us out, but Iâd like to take a look at Jackâs research myself. Do you think Ayla would be okay with that?â
âYouâll have to ask her,â I replied. âBut I donât see there being any issue. What are you thinking?â
âWell, itâs something you said,â he explained. âWhy you? If Jack had some nefarious plan, why target you? He could have put in the path of any Alpha. Hell, Kingston makes a hell of a lot more sense than you. I think thatâs something we should focus on.
â
I thought about it for a moment and it did start to make sense.
âOkay,â I said. âYou take the lead on that then. Iâll deal with the Waar Pak recruits.â
