Chapter 207
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 57: Theo Ayla and I were trying desperately to hide our excitement throughout the entire dinner. As I looked around the table at my parents and Briggs and Mina, it was getting harder and harder not to just blurt it out. The fact that Mina had been eyeing Ayla suspiciously all evening didnât help. Thankfully, it was the end of the meal. I didnât have to wait any longer.
âAre you sure you donât want to wait for Jimmy,â Ayla linked me.
âNo, he said he likely wasnât going to make it,â I said, disappointed. âBut he insisted there was something important he had to do.â
âOkay,â she replied. âYou ready?â
âAre you kidding?â I teased, throwing my arm around her shoulder.
She elbowed me subtly before clearing her throat to get everyoneâs attention.
âSo, Grace,â she said. âIâm afraid I have some bad news.â
âOh?â Mom replied, the atmosphere dropping slightly.
â
âYou know the dress we had picked out for the ceremony?â Ayla stated. âWell, I think weâre going to have to return it. I donât think the style is going to be appropriate anymore.â
âHoney, what are you talking about?â Mom said, not catching on that she was trying to tell her something else. âThe dress looks stunning on you. Itâs perfect.â
âNow, perhaps,â Ayla continued. âBut I think I need something that will be a bit more... accommodating.â She looked at me with a wry grin and I kissed her temple. âMy figure isnât going to be the same by the solstice. Iâll probably be a bit... rounder.â
The room went silent for a moment as everyone let her words sink in. A huge smile slowly spread across Minaâs face.
âI knew something was up,â she exclaimed. âYouâre pregnant!â
My mate and I looked at each other again, pure happiness flowing between us.
âYes,â Ayla replied.
Mina jumped up from her seat and was around the table in a nanosecond, hugging Ayla tightly. My mother was covering her mouth as tears of joy began to well in her eyes. Briggs and my father were up and clapping my back in congratulations. Over the next five to ten minutes, more smiles and embraces were exchanged than I had experienced since I didnât know when.
âOkay, Dad,â I said as he squeezed Ayla happily. âLetâs not crush my mate and pup.â
âI think the pup will be just fine, babe,â Ayla laughed.
I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her to me. Mom came up and grabbed her hands.
âWeâll go back to the dress shop as soon first thing...â
Suddenly, our door slammed open. We all turned to see Jimmy standing in the doorway, panting and looking disheveled.
âWeâve got a problem,â he burst out.
He looked back into the hall behind him, checking in all directions before shutting and locking the bolt before coming in and collapsing on the couch. He was wearing sweatpants and a Tâshirt but no shoes. He must have shifted to get here. Ayla rushed to get him a glass of water, handing it to him as he caught his breath.
âWhat happened?â I insisted, feeling his anxiety.
âI found a meeting,â he said. âI suspected a local group of having ties to the Waar Pak. Caught wind of a getâtogether happening tonight. So I showed up.â
âAnd?â
âOh, itâs Waar Pak, alright,â he said. âThey donât come out and claim the name. At least not yet. Right now they are referring to themselves as Purists, but what theyâre spouting is pure Waar Pak rhetoric.â
âDid you get names?â I asked.
Jimmy looked at me gravely. âYeah,â he replied with a nod. âA few actually. Sarah Walportâs man, John, was there. I know you were worried about him. But... the real problem is the sheriff.â
âWhat?â I hissed, my fists clenching in rage.
Jimmy nodded in confirmation. âI got a good look before someone recognized me. I didnât raise any flags at first. But someone voiced my loyalty to Luna and that caused some issues. Theo, they werenât just trying to run me out of the meeting. If I hadnât gotten away... well, Iâm not sure exactly what they would have done with me, but it wouldnât have been to just let me walk away.
Theyâre planning something they want to keep secret. We need to move fast before they scatter.â
I cursed as Briggs started mindâlinking those we knew were loyal to us. I pulled my phone out of my pocket.
âWe need Randy here,â I said, dialing his contact.
âYeah?â he answered.
âYou somewhere private?â I asked âHey, man,â he replied casually. âIâm not sure if I can but whatâs the plan?â
He must have been in the field and couldnât talk freely.
âJust get here as soon as you can,â I said, keeping it vague.
âRight, Iâll see you in the morning,â he replied before hanging up.
By the time I hung up, Maggie was knocking at our door.
âMaggie, youâre with us tonight.â I held Aylaâs face in my hands. âI need you to stay here with my parents, babe. I donât think theyâre going to try anything tonight, but Iâm not about to risk anything. Donât leave the apartment.â
âIâm not going anywhere,â she said, reaching up to kiss me. âJust be careful, please. Youâre just as much a target as I am now.â
âDonât worry,â I said gently. âNothing will keep me from coming home to you both.â
âThe warriors are gathering outside the packhouse,â Briggs said, holding Mina to his chest. âThey should all be there within the next fifteen minutes. We should get moving.â
I nodded before turning back to Jimmy. âYou still got some energy left in you?â
âThereâs no way in hell Iâm sitting this one out if thatâs what youâre asking,â he said, rising from the couch.
âGood,â I said. I kissed Ayla one more time, firmly and thoroughly. âI love you. Both of you.â
She smiled gently. âI love you, too.â
