O Chapter 20: Ayla Instead of returning to the room, I made my way toward the back of the house. Floor-to-ceiling windows lined a large portion of the lodge and looked out into a beautiful, wooded area. I found the back door and let myself out.
The porch was huge. The house was built on an incline, so this deck sat about ten feet from the ground. I hobbled my way to the stairs. It wasnât pretty, but I managed to make it down them to the bottom. I swung myself through the yard, plopping on the ground not far from the tree line.
I wanted to run. To shift into my wolf and disconnect from the world. But I still couldnât sense Dasha. Even if I could, I wouldnât try to bring her back yet. The ache in my chest reminded me why she needed time.
I caught Kingstonâs scent as he approached me, sitting on the grass beside me.
âAre you okay,â he asked.
I grinned. âYeah, Iâm okay.â
âDid he upset you?â
I chuckled softly. âNo, he didnât upset me. He actually seemed nice. Iâm kind of sad I wonât get a chance to know him better.â
We sat in silence for a while. It was a beautiful morning. The sky was so bright and clear that I could see far into the trees. The ground continued a slow and shallow descent, and I could see a lake off in the distance. It reminded me of my little á
O pond.
âI miss Dasha,â I finally said.
âCan you sense her at all?â Kingston asked.
I shook my head. âShe needs time.â
âWhat about you? How are you feeling about everything?â
I sighed heavily. âIâm still in pain. Iâm still processing the loss of my family. Iâm frustrated that I canât heal and will be stuck like this for months. And I really want to go for a run. But Iâm dealing, and Iâm ready to push forward. However I manage to do that.â
âI may not be able to make the pain go away,â Kingston said. âBut I will do whatever I can to help with the rest.â
My brow furrowed. I hadnât wanted to say anything to him, mostly because I thought I was going crazy. But I really didnât see any reason not to anymore. I liked Kingston.
âActually,â I began, âyou do make the pain go away.â
He sat up straight next to me. âWhat do you mean?â
I couldnât help the blush that crept up my cheeks. âI donât know why, but whenever Iâm close to you, whenever weâre touching, the burning goes away.â I rubbed my chest absently.
Kingston suddenly stood up, moving behind me before sitting back down, his legs stretched on either side of me and his arms going around my middle. I wasnât expecting that, but I smiled as he pulled me against his chest.

âIf it helps,â he whispered, âthen Iâll be here.â
âWell, you canât be here all the time,â I teased. âI doubt your pack would appreciate you going missing.â
Kingston laughed gently. âPerhaps, but Iâll be here whenever you need me nonetheless.â
I leaned back into him, letting the feeling of the bond fade away. I let his scent engulf me. Even sitting next to an actual forest, I could distinguish his smell from the rest.
âDo you think this will help bring your wolf back?â
D âI donât know,â I said solemnly. âI doubt it.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âIt wasnât just Theo and Kieran that hurt Dasha,â I said. âI did, too. I made her accept the rejection in the first place. She loves Kylee and Evie as much as I do, but she didnât agree that saving her from some heartache was worthing losing our fated mate.
Not without a fight. I still made her accept it.â
âBut she understood your reasons. She knows you meant well. And itâs not like you issued the rejection first.â
âNo, but I still pushed for it after,â I said. âAnd when she heard what Kylee had said and realized that was who we gave up our mate for, she couldnât take it. But in the end, I was the one who made her do it. I was the one who didnât fight for them. And I did it for nothing.â
âRegardless of who Kylee turned out to be, it doesnât make your sacrifice any less admirable, Ayla,â Kingston said.
âMaybe, but she still thinks it was all for nothing.â

âI hope so.â
Silence settled over us again. This time it was Kingston who spoke first.
âAre you feeling better?â he asked.
I nodded with a smile.
âDoes this mean youâll stay here?â
âI definitely donât have any better offers,â I teased. âYeah, Iâll stay.â
Kingston squeezed me, kissing the top of my head.
âGood.â
âIâll need your help figuring out what Iâm going to do. Iâll need a job, a place to stay, a car. Iâve got money. I just might need to be chauffeured around for a little while,â I said.
âI can help with all that,â he said. âBut as far as living arrangements are concerned, you can just stay here until you get your cast off. After that, we can revisit the subject.â
âOkay,â I said.
âYou ready to go back in? Iâm sure you want to finish getting settled in.â
Inodded. âYeah. I just needed a moment.â
He started to stand up. âHow did you manage to get out here?â

âYeah, thatâs not going to happen again. Come on. Iâll carry you up,â he said, turning so I could climb on his back.
âUm, I donât think so,â I laughed. âI can make it.â
âAyla, either you get on my back, or I throw you over my shoulder. But Iâm not letting you walk those stairs with crutches and a broken leg.â
âI made it down,â I said, âI can make it back up.â
Kingston swooped down, moving faster than I could react. I yipped as he did exactly what he said he would and picked me up over his shoulder. He was careful with my ribs, avoiding grabbing me around that area.
âKingston put me down.â
âI will,â he said. âUpstairs.â
