Chapter 196
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 46: Theo I went to the apartment after getting back to the packhouse to check on Ayla. Maggie had sent me a text that she had been a bit off throughout the day. She said it didnât seem like anything serious, just that she wasnât in the best of moods. I understood what she was talking about as soon as I got close to the suite. I could feel her anxiety through our connection.
I walked in to see her sitting at the dining table, chewing on a fingernail as she hunched over books and papers strewn across the surface. I rested my hands on her shoulders, kneading the tense muscles with my thumbs.
âWhatâs wrong, baby?â I asked as I kissed the top of her head.
She sighed. âI think I need to quit school.â
âWhat?â Now I was worried. I pulled the chair out beside and sat down, turning her to look at me. âWhy would you think that, Ayla? You were so excited to go to college.â
âI donât want to give it up entirely,â she said but there was still a sadness in her tone. âJust for this semester or this school year. I just feel like I canât keep up. Thereâs so much going on. Iâve had to miss so much and weâre not even a month in.â
âThen we take some other things off your plate,â I said.
âLike what?â she asked sardonically. âYour mother is still doing a lot of the Luna duties, plus planning our solstice ceremony. I havenât been working with her nearly as much as we had planned. Iâd like to do more for Zeff and the magazine. Iâm still having to translate Harryâs 0.00%

â
âYou donât need to worry about the attacks, babe,â I said. âWeâll handle that. And as far as the investigation and thisâ â I took the journal that was sitting in front of her on the table and tossed it aside â âyou can take a break from that. We have plenty of other things to focus on. Besides, if we can stop the Waar Pak now, we donât need to know what they or Harry were planning.â
âBut what he was doing could help us find...â
âItâs not worth you going through this much stress,â I interrupted. âWe can handle the investigation and the Waar Pak and the border attacks without you for a while, okay? Iâll keep you updated on everything, but you just let me worry about all of that.â
âThatâs too much for you to do on your own, Theo,â she insisted.
âIâm not on my own,â I said. âI have a whole pack behind me. Just like you do. We have a good team, babe. Weâll be okay. Taking care of yourself is more important.â
âBut you need me to question anyone whoâs under the command,â she pointed out.
âYeah, and so far, it seems like once itâs broken, we can take it from there,â I stated. She still looked like she was on the verge of tears. âBabe, itâs okay. I swear, itâs perfectly fine for you to focus on school for a while.â
âBut then Iâll feel guilty because thatâs part of my job,â she said. âI want to help. I want to be a good Luna and take care of my pack. I want to help get to the bottom of all this.â

She hesitated for a minute before shaking her head. âNo, I want to be in school.â
âThen youâre staying in.â
âYou just donât get it,â she huffed, turning away and resting her face in her hands.
I pulled her to me, rubbing her back as I held her.
âThen explain it to me, babe,â I said. âI want to understand.â
She leaned into me. âI just feel overwhelmed, and I donât know why.â
âOf course youâre feeling overwhelmed, Ayla,â I said. âYouâve taken on so much and so much has been put on you.â
âSo?â she replied. âI once worked four jobs withour a car while writing a book. Iâve handled a lot before. I donât know why I canât do this.â
âYou should never have had to do that in the first place,â I said firmly. âYou made it through then because losing your home and your family starving pushed you. There was no other option for you, Ayla. That was our failing back then. Now, you know there are options. You donât have to go nonâstop. We wonât fall apart if you donât push yourself so hard.â
âBut then I feel like Iâm failing,â she murmured.
âThen we need to work on getting you past that,â I said. I pushed her up so she could look at me. âI would fall apart if you donât take care of yourself. I wonât watch you work yourself sick, Ayla. You are still the strongest person Iâve ever known, babe. Now, you need to use that strength to put your health and wellâbeing first. Youâre no good to us 54.20%

âSo, I wasted my time getting my degree?â I asked wryly.
âYou know what I mean,â she huffed. âYou werenât the acting Alpha and you were doing something that built a business that helps support us. I donât even know what Iâm going to study yet.â
âAnd you wonât figure that out by quitting,â I said. âAnd I may be taking over early, but that doesnât mean you have to. You have my motherâs help, and anyone elseâs that you need, for as long as you want it. So, for now, no more work on the investigation.
You focus on school and the magazine column. If you find the time to work with Mom or plan our ceremony, then go ahead. But thatâs it, okay?â
âWhat about Kingston?â she asked. âYou know you both need me there to keep things civil.â
I sighed. âI think we can manage, but if it makes you feel better. You can help until Kingston leaves, but once heâs gone, no more.â
She hesitated, but with effort, she pushed her crestfallen expression away and replaced it with relief.
âOkay.â
