Chapter 169
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 17: Ayla I ended up falling asleep on the couch and woke up several hours later. Theo called that evening to let me know he had made it to Bonnerville safely. I made him promise to keep me updated on what he found out. I started to regret my nap as it got later and my anxiety started to rise. I didnât realize how much our mate bond would affect our separation. I could still feel our connection, but it felt like something was missing.
To help distract me. I ended up pulling out Harryâs journal and working on completing the cipher. I was starting to get more of a picture of what was going through his head. I was surprised to find the first pages eluding to Onyxcrown history. There were several names of Dominis family members, but I did know who they were. I had brought three books from my fatherâs box up to the apartment, one of which specifically documented the Dominis family.
I retrieved the book and my own notebook and started the long and tedious task of crossâreferencing. I had been at it for a couple hours when Mina returned.
âCome in.â I linked her.
She entered the apartment to find me on the floor in front of the coffee table.
âWoman, please tell me this isnât what youâve been doing since I left,â
she said.
I snorted. âNo, but I kind of wish I had. Did you know that our great- greatâgrandmother could alter her scent? Pretty effectively, too.â
âI did not know that,â she said, sitting beside me. âHowever, Iâm not 0.00%

âApparently, she used the ability to play pranks when she was younger,â I said, pushing the book closer to Mina. âBut it came in handy later in life when she was helping rogue refugees.â
âRogue refugees?â
âYeah, Iâm not sure what thatâs about yet,â I said. âEither way, Harry seemed fascinated by the ability. Among others that Iâm still exploring.â
âYou managed to finish the cipher?â Mina asked, looking over my work.
âFor the most part, I think,â I confirmed. âSome sections still donât follow the pattern, but that could just be legitimate ramblings.â
âWe got some of the research from his cabin today,â Mina informed me. âLuckily, my boss called, and he has two lab techs that he said heâs sending my way next week.â
âItâs about time,â I said. âSo theyâll start the day you get back?â
Theo and I surprised Mina and Briggs with a trip to the Blue Fang mountain resort for their honeymoon. They werenât going to take one initially, but we wouldnât let that happen. They both deserved this break, and it meant a lot that we could do this for them.
âYeah, Iâm not letting anyone come in without me,â Mina said. âSo, what else have you discovered about our weirdâass family?â
I chuckled. âThe notebook mentions a few members, so Iâve been trying to focus on those. But this book is huge, and Iâve barely made a dent What I can say is that we, indeed, have a weirdâass familyâ

I shrugged. âMy only theory is that it has to do with their abilities. But I have no clue what they have to do with me.
âProbably nothing,â she replied. âHe may been speculating.â
âYeah, that also crossed my mind,â I said. âBut weâll just have to see.â
âWell, Iâm starving. What do you say we take a break, order some food, and have a girlsâ night. I have two more nights of freedom, and I miss my cousin,â she said, elbowing me.
I smiled. âI think I can manage that.â
She pulled out her phone and ordered some takeout.
âSo, are you getting excited?â I asked as I closed up the books.
A broad smile spread across her face and she flushed. âYeah,â she said shyly. âIâm excited. Iâm ready for it to happen.â
I pulled her to me, wrapping my arms around her shoulders in a tight hug âYou know Iâm so happy for you, right?â I told her. âYou deserve the best.â
âI know,â she said, returning my embrace. âNow stop that or youâre going to make me cry.â
We let go of each other with a laugh.
âSo, whatâs it like?â she asked, helping me clear the table.
âWhich part?â I replied, wagging an eyebrow at her.

I took a deep breath, my own smile breaking out. âItâs pretty f***ing incredible. It definitely changes everything. And I mean everything.â
âOh, really... Iâm not sure it could get any better,â Mina said salaciously. âI mean, my mate definitely knows what the hell heâs doing, if you know what I mean.â
I busted out laughing. âI would have said the same thing two weeks ago.â I said as I got up to get us a drink. âBut everything gets more intense.â
âReally?â Mina said incredulously. âYou guys already had a crazy strong connection before you marked each other. Iâve never known another fated pair that could feel each other like you two could before mating. I canât imagine how much more intense it could get.â
âYouâll understand in a couple more days,â I said, handing her a glass of wine as I sat on the couch.
âSo, how are you doing then?â she inquired. âWith Theo being gone?â
I sighed. âI didnât realize how hard it would be, but Iâm okay,â I said. âIâ m not falling apart. I donât feel despair or pain or anything like that. But he hasnât even been gone a day, and it just feels like... like Iâm not whole.â I rubbed my chest absently. âBut that part isnât that bad. Itâs more like a sense of anticipation because I know heâll be back. Itâs the worry thatâs hard.â
âHe has plenty of people to protect him, Ayla,â Mina assured me with a gentle smile.
âI know,â I replied. âBut Iâm worried about them, too. I just need to distract myself until heâs back.â
