Chapter 122
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 122: Ayla âKingston,â I said, trying to pull my hand away, but he held it tight. âWhat are you saying? Have you been hunting...â
âWaar Pak members?â he interrupted. âOf course. The bastards thought they could come back. They thought they could come into my territory and work under my nose. But he got careless. I caught his scent.â
âWho, Kingston?â I asked, getting more nervous. âWho got careless?â
âGrogan,â he said. âArthur Grogan. The asshole was supposed to be dead. I saw your father kill him myself. But he must have survived and escaped.â
âWho is Grogan?â
âHeâs one of the Waar Pak leaders,â Kingston clarified. âBut itâs okay. He wonât get away this time. Iâm closing in.â He tugged me against him. âAnd he led me to you. So I know weâll prevail. It couldnât mean anything else. My goddess came to me.â
Did he mean me? Was he talking about the tale?
âWhat goddess, Kingston? How did Grogan lead you to me?â I asked, trying to step away from him.
âThe night we met,â I said. âI was following his scent when you came around that bend. Thatâs why I was in the road. But I wouldnât have caught him. I wasnât ready. I needed the goddessâs support. I needed you.â
I managed to push away from him. âSo you did know about the Blessed One,â I said, hurt filling my gut. âYou did believe I was her from the start. And you didnât tell me.â
âAyla, you had to have known,â Kingston said, trying to reach for me again.
âHow could I have known?â I yelled, dodging his embrace. âDid you know what would happen when we went to the Gathering?
Did you know they would figure it out?â
Kingston froze, guilt filling his eyes before he looked away.
âOh, my goddess,â I murmured. âYou did. You bastard, you did.â
âI didnât know Conner would act like that,â he insisted. âI didnât mean for you to get hurt, Ayla.â
âNo,â I bellowed, âyou just wanted to use me as bait. You knew they would try to come for me. You used me to flush out whatever Waar Pak members you could. Thatâs why youâre hunting them down.â
âOf course I wanted to draw them out,â he spat. âThey need to be destroyed. Thatâs the only way we can bring our pack back. Itâs the only way we can return to our land.â
My eyes went wide. This had been his plan all along. He was going to use me to reinstate the Onyxcrown Pack. To become their Alpha.
âKingston, that will never happen,â I guaranteed. âThe Onyxcrown Pack is dead. I wonât bring it back. All I want is my fatherâs ring. Now give it to me.â
âNo, no, thatâs not how this is supposed to go,â he growled. âYou came to me. You came to me because we are the last Onyxcrown ranking members. The Alpha and Beta. Now, the Alpha and Luna. You belong by my side, Ayla.
âNo, I donât, Kingston,â I said. âIâm not your mate. I belong with Theo.â
Devastation filled Kingstonâs expression, quickly followed by rage. And I realized the mistake I had made. I started backing away toward the door.
âKingston,â I said calmly, âcalm down. Iâm just going to go, okay? Youâ re not yourself right now.â
âYou wonât leave me again, Ayla,â Kingston growled. âThis is our destiny.â
I shook my head. âNo, Kingston, itâs not.â
I rushed for the door, but Kingston was too fast. He grabbed my arm hard and spun me around. His mouth was on mine before I knew what was happening. It was painful and sickening. I pushed and pulled to get him off of me.
âKingston...â
âHe thinks he can trick you into choosing him,â Kingston rumbled. âIâll show him how wrong he is.â
His hold on me was hurting. He reached and started pulling my hair back. When he grabbed my chin, turning my head sharply, I knew what he was planning.
He was going to mark me.
Terror ran through me and tears formed in my eyes. I fought harder but he was too strong. He couldnât do this. I couldnât let him do this. I searched for the strength I needed.
âStop,â I commanded.
It was enough to make him pause. I yanked my arm free, punching up against his jaw. I didnât get enough leverage to break it but it did knock him back a few steps.
âDonât touch me,â I followed.
His rage cleared and realization of what just happened filled his face.
âAyla, Iâm sor...â
âDonât follow me, Kingston. Leave me and Theo alone.â
I ran out of the apartment, Kingston calling after me, and through the packhouse. I tore off the property and drove in the direction of home.
I was too shaken to call anyone. I just needed to get out of Sablemane.
I was almost at my motherâs house before I finally allowed myself to stop and collect myself. I took some deep breaths as I picked up the phone I had just purchased. I was still too afraid to turn mine on. Kingston had tracked me before.
I dialed Theoâs number. Praying he would pick up.
âAyla,â Theoâs panicked voice sounded. âPlease, goddess, tell me this is you, baby.â
âYes, Theo, itâs me,â I rushed.
âThank the goddess,â he muttered. I could hear the utter relief in his voice. âYou scared the fucking hell out of all of us.â
âIâm not going back with them, Theo,â I told him. âIâve been taking care of myself for years. I have a say in this, and Iâm not leaving.â
âI know, sweetheart,â he replied. âWhere are you? Iâm coming to get you.â
âIâm almost to Maâs,â I said. âBabe, I had to see Kingston first. I just wanted to get Dadâs ashes and ring back. I promise.â
âShh, itâs okay, baby,â he assured me. âI know. Iâm on my way. We were already out looking for you, so Iâm not far.â
âOkay,â I said, pulling off the side of the road. âIâm getting Kylee and Ma. I donât care if they hate me right now. Iâm not leaving them out here on their own.â
âHarden has agreed to take them to the safe house as well,â Theo said. âIf you think theyâd prefer that.â
âIâll let them decide,â I said.
âDid you get it back?â
âI got his ashes,â I said. âBut Kingston... heâs not himself right now.â
âAyla, what happened?â Theo demanded. âDid he hurt you?â
â
âNo,â I lied. I didnât need to start a war on top of everything else. âAt least not physically. Heâs not taking the situation well.â
âIt doesnât matter,â Theo said. âIâm on my way, babe.â
I pulled into the driveway of my childhood home and my stomach dropped.
âTheo...â
He had to have heard the panic in my voice. âAyla, is something wrong?â
âThe door is open.â
