Chapter 22

21.

The Mafia Bride

The interview went on and suddenly, Don DeLuca raised his hands to silence us. We heard faint sounds of gunshots. As we were about to get up, DeLuca grabbed my hands and his guards pointed a gun at us.

"I knew it, you both are responsible for this." He said. "You're our hostages."

I felt my heart stop. This was it, this is how I was going to die. I glanced across the room and saw that we were completly surrounded, there was no way out for us.

A guard barged inside the lounge.

"The Morettis have betrayed us." He said.

When everyone had their eyes on the guard, Amy gestured to me. Taking advantage of the situation we threw the guard towards DeLuca's goons hovering us. When they were scrambling, we sucessfully made it out of the room.

As we reached out, we were met with a wild gunshot and frantically running people. Amy and I crouched low to avoid being hit. I helped her grab a wooden table and flip it over – it was our cover. She took out her pistol and unlocked the slide stop. I immitated her and tried to get my gun out of the duct tape tangle.

"Meg hurry up!" Amy said.

The sounds of guns around us increased and I threw away the bundle of duct tape. I used my hand and managed to unlock the slide stop.

"Now run to the bar counter and try not to get shot."

Amy and I ran out of our cover. We crouched and ran as fast as we could. When we reached the counter, we saw a guy aiming a gun at us. Reflexively, both Amy and I shot at the same time.

Amy bent down to check the guy's pulse. She looked bewildered.

"Shit we killed him." She blurted. She was about to push that guy's body away when I stopped her.

I dug through his pockets and found a gun along with lots of bullets. Before Amy pushed him, I took a handhkerchief from his pocket to wipe blood off a wound Amy got while running away.

Amy took a peek outside and gasped.

"Leo is surrounded." She blurted. "We've got to cover for him."

Normally, the thought of holding a gun filled me with dread but when I saw Leo cornered, hiding behind a broken table and fending off a shower of bullets, I was filled with all the courage I needed. All I knew was that I had to save him.

Amy took her position and I took mine besides her.

"Ready?" Amy asked.

I took a deep breath and statied my shaking hands. "Ready."

Both of us fired at the opposite direction. Leo noticed us and tried to make it behind the counter but it did not work.

"Fuck!" Amy blurted. "We're short on bullets."

"Take mine." I handed her my gun. She shot thrice.

We'd officially run out of bullets. Even the ones that we had stolen off a dead guy weren't enough. The shooters were closing towards Leo, it was only a matter of time until Leo could hold on.

"We're trapped unless there is a big distraction." Amy declared defeated.

We both pressed our backs against the wooden cabinet. Honestly, there wasn't a big enough distraction in a freaking gun fight.

I looked at the exquisite bottles on the shelves and an idea struck me.

"Amy give me your handkercheif." I said.

I grabbed an open bottle filled with alcohol. Amy handed me the handkerchief. I tied one end of the handkerchief to the neck of the bottle and dipped the other inside the bottle, soaking it with alcohol.

"Give me your lighter."

Amy handed me her lighter that she kept in her purse. For once, I was thankful that she smoked.

I burnt one end of the handkerchief and held it firmly. Immedieatly, I flung it and threw it on the opposite side of Leo. The bottle fell on a decorative piece of tapestry and immediately caught fire.

There were screams everywhere. I knew my idea was a success.

"Real nice Meg." Amy beamed. "I never knew I'd stay alive to see the day you shoot a Molotov Cocktail."

I glanced at the dance floor where bullets were still showering.

"Let do it once more."

Meg and I tore the hem of my wide-legged jumpsuit pants and we repeated the process. This time we sucessfully anhilated four of those goons.

"Now we can say we officially set the dance floor on fire."

Amy rolled her eye but I could she her smile.

"Come on let's head towards the exit." Amy said. Before leaving, she grabbed a bottle along with her gun,

Careful, both of us made our way to the nearest exit. Leo too made his way over there. He was limping visibly. He looked so hurt.

"Hurry up." Leo said. "Alex is bringing the car."

We made it safely to the street. Amy and I supported Leo and ran towards the place where Alex was waiting for us. When we were running, I heard bullet shots around us. I turned to take a look – Bianca was in her car shooting at us.

"Stop you fuckers!" Bianca blurted. "How dare you kill my father?"

"Because you killed our brother." Leo said.

"Shut up and run." Amy said.

All of us ran as fast as we could. However, Bianca kept getting closer. We couldn't outpace the car. Leo hit back once or twice, but it was too risky. He was already weak and we couldn't risk him getting hurt. He aimed at her front tires and punctured it.

Bianca cursed and got out of the car; she followed us on foot. Bianca started shooting wildly at us.

I found a curved lane and all of us took a sharp turn. Bianca followed us.

However, we stumbled upon a dead end. There was a wall. Bianca arrived. She dramatically walked towards us. Leo shielded me with his body. From the corner of my eye, I saw Amy seeking cover behind a trash can.

Bianca reloaded her gun and cocked it in our direction. I knew what was going to happen – she was going to shoot Leo in his chest. The world disappeared as I imagined Bianca shooting Leo. If she shot him, Leo would die.

Leo would die.

I could not let him die. I love him and I cannot watch him die while I still have life in me.

I pushed him aside and that moment I felt a sharp, piercing pain in my shoulder. I felt like the world froze for a moment. Everything around me was shaking; that's when I realized that I was falling.

I felt a sharp stinging pain in my head like thousands needles pierced me.

The last I saw was Amy rushing towards me, Bianca fallen over, a pool of blood around her. Leo... I saw Leo. He'd fallen when I pushed him. He crawled to me and lifted me up.

"Meg... please stay alive." He said. I noticed tears trickled from the corner of his eyes.

"Le... Leo... I..." I managed to mutter. I wanted to say I love you but my words choked up.

I raised my hand to touch his face but I did not have the strength. My eyes shut, all I could hear was Leo's voice in a whisper:

"Please wake up. I love you."

Slowly my consciousness slipped away. All I could remember were Leo's warm arms wrapped around me and his gentle voice, before everything went blank.
