Chapter 67: "No, no, no!"
Switching to brothers
Third Person POV:
It was Jesse's turn to check on Lidia. They replaced her door handle so it had no lock on it, in case she did something.
And she did.
He knocked, expecting to hear her shuffle from her balcony or her bed and towards the door, lazily opening it. But she didn't.
And that scared him.
"Lidia? Lidia, are you there?" Icy cold fear rippled through his chest, felt only once before. When his father had died.
He swung open the door. One of his brothers heard him and came rushing towards him. "Lidia!" Jesse hurriedly searched her room, then her closet. He felt a twang of relief when he didn't see her hanging from something.
It didn't last long.
The person that came rushing was James. He must've been heading back to his room from the at-home gym, since his face was flushed and still had tape on his knuckles.
James beat on the bathroom door, tirelessly trying his hardest to get in. "Lidia!" He tried to turn the knob. Locked. The twins looked at each other, knowing what this meant. Jesse sprinted to get the others, though it hurt to do so. James continued to pound and try to open the door.
"Lidia baby, open the door please!" He desperately cried out. Why had they not taken away her bathroom lock?!
He finally decided that was taking too long and began to ram the door with his shoulder. Each ram, pain erupted in his shoulder but he didn't care. The pain that was to follow if he didn't get in there would be much worse.
Soon, all brothers were in there. "Do it harder James!" Caden hastily yelled.
"I'm fucking trying!" James voice came out much stronger than he felt.
It had been three minutes since Jesse first knocked on her door. In three more, she would be dead.
But they didn't know that.
Zack was calling 911, pleading for an ambulance to come. After he hung up, he then ordered the men guarding the gate to let them through. His hair was in a disarray. He could not lose her.
None of them could.
Not a single one.
Lidia didn't know it, but she was the lifeline of the family. The one keeping them sane. Without her, the boys had gone crazy. It was a miracle Sasha stuck around. They could not afford to go back to that dark period, this time knowing they wouldn't ever see her again.
No, they could never let that happen.
Caden was yelling at his younger brother, though deep down he knew he shouldn't have. It didn't matter. Lidia's life was far more important than James's feelings.
Jesse was pacing around the room, tears running down his cheeks. A feeling he prayed he would never, ever feel again came back.
The fear of death.
Luke just stood there in the doorway, motionless. He let it happen again. Another person he loved was going to die, again.
No. He promised his father he would find her and keep her safe.
He was not a man to break his promises so easily.
Luke's eyes narrowed as he shoved his desperate brothers out of the way. Newfound strength coming from deep down, helped him break down the door. In an instant he rushed in. There was no time to process the image of his baby sister sitting face down in the water, fully clothed.
He wasn't sure that image would leave him so quickly though.
Some of the boys rushed in with him, some stayed in the room, not wanting to see their baby sister, the best one out of all of them, possibly dead.
Luke hastily pulled her out of the water just as her body started to make the tiniest movement. Just in time. A little longer and she would be dead.
In a heartbeat he was giving her mouth to mouth, then chest compressions, then mouth to mouth, all while muttering nonsense.
He kept it up for another minute and a half, trying desperately to revive his sister. "No! No! No!" He let out a guttural scream as Caden put a hand on his shoulder.
He would not let this happen.
He would not let someone he loves die in his arms. Not again. Never again.
Suddenly, as Luke's CPR began to get sloppy, Lidia's eyes opened. She rolled to her side as she threw up everything. Water, food, you name it, she threw it up.
Luke barely registered what was happening through his teary eyes. Caden shoved him to the side and helped Lidia in any way he could, keeping her hair out of her face, helping her get on her side better.
But Luke just looked on. He hadn't cried since Lidia was whisked away by their mother. He didn't cry at his dad's funeral. Yet, sitting back on his knees, remembering the not-too-long-ago image of Lidia face first in the water, unmoving, a single tear crept down his face.
Zack had called Sasha, telling her what's happening, not daring to go into the bathroom. Unlike his three other brothers, he didn't want to be haunted for life with the image of Lidia, on the brink of death.
Jesse was still pacing. Still having tears fall down his face. He blamed himself. Maybe if I checked in on her earlier I could have prevented this. His shaky hands were gripping on tight to his hair. Desperate to find something to cling to and ground himself, he grabbed her desk.
Distantly James could hear the sirens of an ambulance coming up their driveway. He just watched the beautiful image of Lidia throwing up, of her breathing, still thinking about how close they had came to losing her.
All of the hints she had dropped. He racked his brain, trying to figure out why he hadn't known. Trying to figure out the signs. He concluded that this went far deeper than just the last few weeks. This went all the way back to when she first got here.
Maybe even before that.
He didn't like it.
Out of nowhere, men rushed into the bathroom and placed her onto the stretcher. They did other things but they didn't register in his mind. He just kept thinking about the signs. He had to have seen them. Had to. But he didn't.
That's what made him feel bad.
Zack and Caden were the only ones following her out. The others were in too much shock to do anything. James eventually noticed the notebook sitting on the counter. He reached over the bile on the floor, and took it in his hands. First, reading it hurriedly, then, taking his time.
What? This, this makes no sense. How could she tell us to live our lives when she is our life? James thought as the notebook shook in his hands.
She was perfectly fine when we played Twister, wasn't she? James kept thinking.
Meanwhile Jesse was outside in her room. He decided to call the one person outside his family he knew he could trust, truly and wholeheartedly, without any hesitation,
Audrey.
"Hello there sir, I was wondering when you were gonna call me-"
"It's Lidia, she's been in an accident." Jesse hurriedly cut her off.
"What! Tell me what happened now! What kind of accident? Does it have anything to do with what happened at the par-" Audrey rambled out words so quickly she could be an auctioneer.
"It-it was a-a, a suicide accident." Jesse's voice broke on the word suicide, hating that word with every fiber of his being.
You could hear Audrey let out a gasp, then a sniffle, "Did she, did she-"
"No, she did not." Jesse cut her off, not wanting any more unwanted thoughts.
Audrey let out a sigh of relief, "That's wonderful. Absolutely amazing. Is she being taken to a hospital?"
"Yes, it's the one right on Main Street."
"All right. Can you come pick me up?" Audrey eventually asked.
Even with everything going on, Jesse was able to let out a little chuckle. "Yes, I'll come pick you up."
When Jesse hung up, James had come out of the bathroom, still holding the notebook. "Who was that?"
Jesse squinted his eyes in confusion, then realized what he meant. "Oh, that was, uh, Audrey. I figured she'd want to know about what happened to Lidia."
"Oh okay, are you leaving?"
"Yeah, I was going to pick her up then take her to the hospita-"
"Great then you can take all of us." Luke finally came out of the bathroom, no evidence of crying left on his face.
Jesse nodded while sucking in a breath. "All right then, who's gonna clean up that mess in there?"
"I'll figure it out." Luke said.
"Okay, let's go."
Sorry it's a bit short. Hopefully this suffices until the next one! What did you do when you read that Jesse was calling Audrey instead of Ian? It's actually been on my mind since she was introduced. Love her! Anyways, I hope you liked it and don't forget to vote, comment, and obviously like:)
