Chapter 68: At the Hospital
Switching to brothers
Third Person POV:
After Lidia arrived at the hospital with Zack and Caden, she was rushed into a room where they would further examine her. The two brothers were not allowed in there, despite their protests.
"Do you know who I am?" Caden growled furiously, his face and neck beginning to grow red with frustration.
"Please," Zack decided to use the desperation tactic, "our baby sister is in there. You have to let us in!" His voice was shaky and pleading, though not by choice.
"I'm sorry sirs, that isn't an option. You can go sit in the waiting room right over there and fill out this form for the patient." The burly man-nurse uncrossed his arms and handed Zack a clipboard.
"To hell with options! I need to see my sister now!" Caden roared in frustration.
Suddenly a hand landed on his shoulder, and started tugging him away from the nurse just trying to do his job. "Come on man, let's go sit down, k'?"
Caden glanced behind him. Ian was there, his eyes begging him to go sit down. Caden sighed and his snarl soon turned into grief. "Alright." His shoulders that were always straight hunched over as a boy six years younger than him led him into the waiting room.
They both sat down as an anxious Zack filled out the paperwork. He tapped his foot against the ground incessantly, and chewed on the inside of his mouth.
Ian quickly looked away from Zack. Though the sight of Caden was not much better, at least he wasn't tapping his foot.
He let there be silence for as long as he could, but he too, was worried for Lidia. "So uh, what, what happened? Like do you know or was it just something spontaneous or-" he started to list off question after question, not really leaving any room for an answer.
"It was both." Came Caden's cold, closed off reply.
"Right. So when you mean both do you mean-"
"I don't know it was just both!," Caden exclaimed, obviously frustrated by the teenage boy. "She seemed fine but I guess it was just always there. The-the sadness I guess. Looking back at it now, I can see it. In the way she talked about certain things. In the way she acted. That sadness was there. But she'd never told anybody. And-and I can't figure out why." The typically strong man, who loved so much to a fault, voice cracked with tears.
Silence followed again as it sunk into Ian. He knew why she didn't tell anyone. She had told him why she didn't tell anyone but he was too stupid to realize it. "C-Caden?"
"Hm?" Caden absentmindedly hummed in acknowledgment.
"I-I think I know why," Ian looked down at the tiled floor then back up again. Caden raised an eyebrow in question. "I mean, I think I know why she didn't tell you guys. She-she didn't think it was important enough for you guys to know." He said, remembering those words she had told him on their first date.
Caden's face crumpled even more, if that was even humanly possible. "But-" his voice cracked, "but why?"
"I wish I knew." Ian said wistfully.
Soon the twins, Luke, and Audrey arrived. Audrey's eyes were red and puffy. The twin's eyes weren't any better. Luke just had on his typical, stony face.
Caden looked up. His noticed that Luke had no sign, not even a hint of crying on it. His frustration soon came back as he stood up as they sat down.
"Where is she?" Luke demanded.
"They took her through those doors. I don't know where she went though." Zack sniffled.
Audrey began sobbing in her chair again. Jesse pulled her into his side and leaned his head against her. "She'll be okay." He said, though he said it mainly for himself.
"Luke, wanna know what I don't understand?" Caden looked at Luke, both of them still standing.
"Caden, not now, please." Zack begged, exhausted.
Caden's arms moved with his words, "Luke our sister just tried to kill herself and you can't even make a single emotion pop up on that expressionless face of yours? How fucking heartless can you be!?"
"Caden! Not. Now." Zack demanded.
"When! When is the right time! When she's successfully killed herself? When she's six feet under? Tell me when!" He yelled at Zack this time.
Manny showed up just as an out-of-control Caden was about to swing on Luke. "Caden what the hell are you doing? Stop that!" Manny rushed and put Caden in a bear hug.
"Tell him to at least act sad!" Caden yelled.
Luke remained quiet throughout the whole ordeal. He could've defended himself. Could've told Caden that he did feel. That he was probably the most upset.
But he didn't.
Instead he let his brother blow off his steam. He let his brother yell at him. He let his brother disrespect him.
Because he was the oldest.
He was the one responsible for them. He was the one that made sure they were well. It was his fault Lidia got even close to a suicide attempt. He should've done better. He was the oldest. His father put him in charge.
And it was him that had failed.
Miserably.
"Alright, I said alright! Do you think your sister would want this? Do you?" Manny shouted and looked around.
Everyone's eyes but Luke's looked down. They all mumbled some variation of 'no'. Audrey couldn't even get the word out.
"Didn't think so! So everyone, calm down! Think of Lidia and what she would do. Then do that and shut the hell up!"
That made everyone quiet down and sit, except Luke since he decided to stand by the entry door. Caden cut his eyes at Luke.
The only sounds you could hear, was the sound of Audrey's sniffles and Zack tapping his foot along the polished tile floor.
Everyone had different scenarios of what was happening in their head. None of them were good. None of them were even remotely good. They all ended with a funeral for the kindest person they knew.
After what felt like eons, the doors Zack and Caden had been denied entry to opened. Out came a woman with cropped short, black hair and a white coat over her flowery dress.
"Which one of the you is her guardian?" The woman spoke.
