Bonus Chapter 1 (Aka the cheesiest day ever)
Strip
"Oh god," I muttered as Toby's car came to a stop.
"We're HEEEERE!" Janice sang from the front seat, throwing her door open.
"I cannot believe this," I said, turning to Max, who was shoved between me and Drew.
"It can't be that bad, Molly," Max said, unbuckling.
"I beg to differ."
"That response doesn't totally make sense in this situation-"
"Shut up," I said, elbowing him in the ribs.
"Come on, slow pokes!" Janice said, opening my door.
I glared at her. "Really?"
"It'll be fun!"
"Unlike some people, I don't want to spend the last weekend of freedom I have in the set of a rom com," I said, stepping out of the car.
Janice waved her manicured nails in my face. "Keep an open mind.
I rolled my eyes, and turned to face the entrance to the 3 county fair. It was so full people were almost bursting out of the chain link fence surrounding the area, and the smell of deep-fried candy bars was strong enough to make my stomach clench. The distant screams of people on roller coasters was mixed with the bells on rigged games blaring.
It was enough to give me an instant head ache.
"It looks fun to me," Max said, his arm wrapping around my waist. It was a gesture he had just started doing recently, and so far it had never failed to make my face break out in the stupidest grin imaginable.
"This looks like your personal version of hell," I said.
"But I am being positive about it. Besides, I haven't been to a fair since I was ten."
"Did you enjoy it back then?"
"No, I threw up on the hang glider ride and hid behind a hot dog stand with my library book for the rest of it."
"Sounds enjoyable."
"Hurry up!" Janice groaned, already in line for tickets.
I groaned. "I wanted to spend today with James. I'm not gonna see him at all once school starts."
"You share a room," Max said.
"Yeah, but I'm going to have homework, and he's gonna spend all his free time with Isabelle-"
"Molly, you're going to see more than enough of your brother. I promise."
We reached the ticket line, and took our place behind Janice. She looked ready to explode, bouncing up and down on her toes and craning her neck to see every inch of the fair.
"Holy fuck, they still have The Hurricane!" Janice squealed. She turned to me. "You have to go on that with me."
"Why do I have to do it?"
"Drew and Toby are gonna be to busy being all lovey dovey."
"It's true," Toby said, pecking Drew on the cheek.
"And we aren't?" Max asked.
"We aren't," I said. "Just being here is more than enough romance for me. But still, that doesn't mean I want to puke my guts out on a 12 year old."
"Pleeeeeease!" Janice begged, practically falling to her knees before me.
I rolled my eyes. "We'll see."
Janice took this for a yes, and jumped back up and turned to the ticket lady.
I looked to Max. "Think we'll make it out alive?"
"Well, as I've already stated, I'm quite optimistic about our situation."
---
"Why would they invent a deep fried Twinkie?" I asked, watching Drew cut one open.
"Try to think outside the box here," Max said, shoving a fry into his mouth.
"It's instant kidney failure."
"Don't be so judgmental," Toby said, as he took a bite. His eyes widened. "Oh, wow, this is actually great."
I cringed. "Just looking at you eat it is making me feel sick."
Toby shrugged. "I'm always a slut for deep fried food."
"I'll say," Drew said, giving Toby a look that certainly wasn't suitable for children.
"Ohmygosh, we're in public, keep it in your pants," Janice said, coming up next to me with a milkshake the size of her head in her hand.
"How are you going to drink all that?" I asked.
"You underestimate me," Janice said around the straw. "Plus, stop being such a downer."
"She has a point," Max said.
"I just don't like super greasy fair food."
"Says the girl who ate nothing but McDonald's for a year."
I looked at Janice in mock anger, slapping her arm.
"Hey!" Janice said. "Not my milkshake arm!"
"Come on Molly, there has to be something here you'd like," Max said.
I thought for a moment, scanning the area. "Well, I wouldn't be apposed to cotton candy."
Max grinned. "Come on," he said, heading for the nearest food stand.
We waited behind a group of loud ten year old boys who were shoving each other around.
"Do they have a guardian nearby?" I said to Max.
"I'm sure they do."
"But what if they don't?"
"You are such a parent."
"Well, EXCUSE me for caring about the well-being of children."
Max grinned at me. I couldn't help but grinning back.
Suddenly Max leaned in and pressed his lips against mine, gentle but firm. I tensed up for a second before melting into it. I felt Max's hands wrap around my waist, the sound of the chaos around us fading away.
I was brought back to reality by the lady at the food cart slamming her hand on the counter.
"Are you going to order anything?" She asked with a scowl.
I suddenly pulled myself away from Max. "Uh, yeah, sorry."
Her frown only deepened.
"One bag of cotton candy, please," Max said.
"What was that?" I asked as the lady turned around.
Max shrugged. "Guess I just got caught up in the moment."
---
"I'm going to die."
"You are not going to die," Janice said, inspecting her nails.
"I am. I am going to die here in the middle of the fucking 3 county fair and it's all going to be your fault."
Janice rolled her eyes. "She's over reacting."
Max sat next to me on the bench where I was lying. The ground was being tossed back and forth beneath me. There were 6 different skies.
"I told you she shouldn't have gone on that ride," Drew said, looking up from something on his phone.
"It wasn't that bad," Janice said.
"Uuuuuugh," I groaned.
"Ok, so maybe it wasn't the best  idea-"
"I'll go get her a ginger ale," Toby said, Drew automatically following.
"I'll get you a wet wash cloth," Janice said. "That helps. Probably. Whatever, it'll help."
She planted a quick kiss on my forehead as if she was mothering a child with a fever before sashaying off.
"I can't believe she made me do that," I said, clutching my stomach.
"To be fair, you did look like you were having fun for a minute there," Max said.
I glared at him.
"Ok so two seconds. But that's till two seconds of fun right?"
I groaned.
"Poor Molly," Max said, gently brushing my hair away from my face.
"I told you I would hate it here."
Max leaned down and lightly kissed my cheek.
"We are in public you know? Might want to tone down the PDA."
"We might traumatize some children."
"Exactly," I giggled.
"You ready to sit up?"
"I think so."
Max helped me up, and the ground started spinning twice as fast."
"Ugh."
"You ok?"
"Ugh."
"I'll take that as a yes."
I rested my head on Max's shoulder, tempted to burry my forehead in his neck.
"Sorry that you aren't exactly having the best day."
"Well, you know, anything's better than going back to school tomorrow."
"That'll be fun," Max said.
"You are such a nerd."
"Guilty."
I smiled, my eyelids lazily starting to close. Max gently planted a kiss on the top of my head.
"Your hair smells good," He said.
"You really know how to woo a girl, don't you?"
"Here," Drew said, suddenly standing in front of me, a can of ginger ale inches from my face.
"Sorry to ruin the moment," Toby added.
"Thanks," I said, taking a sip of the soda.
"I'M HERE!" Janice yelled, making me choke. "Sorry, there was a line at the ladies room, but I think this'll-"
Janice stopped. "You're sitting up?"
"Uh, yes?" I said between coughs.
"Why do I even bother," Janice said, tossing her damp paper towel over her shoulder.
Toby rolled his eyes. "Don't litter," He said, picking it up and throwing it into the nearest garbage can."
"You think you're up for one more ride?" Max asked.
"Do I look up to it?"
"This one'll be easy, I promise."
"If it's the fucking ferris wheel," I said, standing up.
"Ok, it's the ferris wheel."
I shook my head. "And I thought so highly of you too."
"OOOOH, ferris wheel!" Janice clapped.
"Sounds fun," Drew said, draping his arm over Toby's shoulder.
Almost on cue, I felt Max's arm wrap around my waist. "Ok, let's all go."
"We should head soon afterwards though," Toby said. "Molly might not be able to take much more of this."
"I'll be fine." I said, taking another sip of my ginger ale. "Uh. Probably."
"Good enough for me!" Janice said, and started heading for the ferris wheel. "Hurry up guys!"
The line was long, but moved quickly enough, and we were soon all shoved into the compartment, Drew and Toby sitting on one side, Max and I on the other, with Janice shoved between us.
"You aren't afraid of heights, right?" I asked Max as we started moving.
"I think I'll be ok."
"This is so much FUN!" Janice squealed. "Wait, let me get my phone, we need selfies!"
I turned to look out on the fair as we continued to rise. It was dark, the sky dark inky blue. The lights on the rides blinked like over-sized stars, the air cool and comforting.
"So was today too awful?" Max asked as Janice started taking photos.
"I lived through it, didn't I?" I asked, turning to face him.
"What a champ."
I laughed. "I can't believe you sometimes."
"In a good way?"
I replied by closing the few inches between us, gently pressing my lips to his. I could feel him smile as his other arm wrapped around me, pulling me slightly closer. I could feel the others looking, but neither of us seemed to care.
"Ohmygosh, this is SO cute!" Janice cried, followed by the sound of her phone's camera going off.
I waved her away, still not pulling away from Max.
"Kids these days," Drew said.
Toby giggled. Janice was making audible gasps as she looked through the photos.
"These are so going on the internet."
