CHAPTER 19
Falling Hard
ARIENNE CALLOWAY
I stood in front of my mirror, adjusting the long sleeves of my dress. The deep brown fabric hugged my waist before flaring out into a soft, flowy skirt. The ruched bodice and asymmetrical neckline gave it an elegant touch, and for once, I actually felt like I had put effort into dressing up. I wasn't exactly the type to go for glitter and shimmer, but the subtle shine of the fabric under my bedroom lights made me feel like I belonged at the café party tonight.
I reached for a silver necklace and clasped it around my neck, the delicate chain adding just enough to the look without being too much. My makeup was simpleâsoft brown eyeshadow, a hint of liner, and a natural glossy lip. Nothing too extra.
As I pulled my hair over one shoulder, smoothing out a few waves, I heard a knock on my door.
"Ari, are you ready?" Mom's voice came from outside.
"Almost!" I called back, grabbing a pair of earrings before opening the door.
She stepped inside, already dressed in a chic, beige outfit that matched her usual elegant style. Her gaze traveled over my outfit, and I could see the way her lips pressed together in thought.
"You look beautiful," she finally said, but there was something in her toneâsomething unreadable.
I narrowed my eyes. "But...?"
Mom let out a soft sigh and leaned against the doorframe. "Nothing. It's just... this party, this road tripâ" she paused, choosing her words carefully. "I just want you to be careful, Ari."
I frowned. "Careful about what?"
She hesitated for a moment, then shook her head. "Never mind. Just enjoy yourself tonight."
I knew her well enough to know there was more on her mind, but I also knew that pressing her wouldn't get me any answers. Instead, I nodded and grabbed my small purse. "Alright, I'm ready to go."
As I walked past her, she gently squeezed my arm. "Ari."
I turned to look at her.
She gave me a small smile. "No matter what, don't lose yourself, okay?"
Her words lingered in my mind as we headed out. I wasn't sure what she meant exactly, but I had a feeling this trip was going to be more than just a simple birthday getaway.
