Chapter 34

The next day when Sanem got to the hospital with Aziz and Miriban, they were getting Can ready to take him to a private room.

DOCTOR: "Aziz bey, good news, we're moving Can to a private room, so far everything looks good, the swelling in his brain is going down, we're very pleased with his progress, hopefully in three, four days we will cut back on his meds so he can start waking up." Sanem, Aziz and Miriban were so happy.

AZIZ: "Sanem, did you hear my dear, he's going to be ok, (wiping tears from his eyes) my lion." She hugs Aziz and Miriban, she was very and emotional.

MIRIBAN: " Sanem let's go to the cafeteria, you are hardly eating, you need to get your energy back, Can is going to need you when he wakes up."

SANEM: " I can't eat, but I will come and have some tea with you."

MIRIBAN: "Sanem, I know you're worried, but Can will be okay, and you need to take care of yourself, eat something, you look very drained, did you sleep at all last night?

SANEM: " not really, once he wakes up I'll be fine."

Aziz called Miriban and told her Can was in his room and they can go up now." On the way up to see Can, Sanem's phone rings.

SANEM: " hello, Anil, how are you?"

ANIl: I'm fine, how is Can, doing?"

SANEM: " he's doing good, he still in a coma, hopefully they can take him off the meds soon, and he can start waking up, and he's in a private room now."

ANIL: that's great news Sanem, listen I have some good news for you and Can, I was talking to Bella's adoptive parents, Bella is asking about you and Can.

Bella's father knows Can from college they were friends, his name is Ali, they're okay if you and Can want to take Bella once in a while or even visit them ." Sanem was so happy.

SANEM: "Anil that's wonderful news, I can't wait to tell him, we will definitely take Bella once in a while.

Thank you so much!! Sanem was so happy. They talked a little while longer, he was telling her that Bella is doing fine, and that he wishes Can a speedy recovery. "When Can wakes up tell him the boys are waiting for him to play basketball ball."

SANEM: "I will Anil, thank you for everything."

Sanem headed to Can's room and Aziz noticed her smile.

AZIZ: " Sanem, it's nice to see you smile,"

She told him what Anil told her.

AZIZ :that's great news dear, I know Can loved that little girl, he will be very happy to hear it when he wakes up."

Aziz and Miriban were getting ready to leave, Sanem decided to stay the night.

MIRIBAN: "Sanem, please eat something, I'm going down to the cafeteria to get you some soup, I'm not leaving until you eat." She went and got her soup and a bagel, Sanem ate most of it . Miriban was happy, but still worried about her.

"Tomorrow I'm bringing you breakfast and you're going to eat, okay?" Sanem agreed.

Sanem stayed next to Can all night, she pulled her chair up next to him and held his hand all night.

The next morning she woke up, went into the bathroom to freshen up. When she walked out of the bathroom she saw Huma standing over Can, there was no emotion on her face, she just stood there staring at Can.

SANEM: " good morning Huma." She turned to look at Sanem but all Sanem saw was hatred in her eyes.

HUMA: " this is your fault my son is in the hospital, he almost lost his life because of you!"

SANEM: "I think you're mistaken, the man that hit him had psychological issues"

HUMA: " You can leave, you're not needed here "

SANEM: I'm not going anywhere, my place is with Can. I don't know what your problem is with me, you don't even know me."

HUMA: " You just want his money and status, you came from nothing and will remain a nothing."

SANEM: "well if I'm a nothing and I remain a nothing I will be just like you Huma a nothing. Because it's seems to me you married Aziz for his money, because you came from a neighborhood worse than mine." Huma was getting angry, " what's the matter did I strike a nerve?"

HUMA: " how dare you judge me!!"

SANEM: " why not, you're judging me and you don't even know me."" Why did you come here Huma, you missed everything that was important in his life and in Emre's and you come here to do what, to pretend you love your son."

HUMA: "how dare you, you don't know me at all. I think it's you who needs to leave, he was in love with Polen, and you took him away from her."

SANEM: " if he loved Polen he would have married her a long time ago, maybe he couldn't love her because she reminded him of you Huma, someone who only wants money and to status. Where is your heart Huma, I actually feel sorry for you, I think you're incapable of love. Why are you really here.?"

HUMA: "I don't have to answer to you! I'm leaving!"

Aziz and Miriban walked in the door right on time.

AZIZ: "well Huma, did you come to see if your son is really alive. Next time your lawyer calls Can's lawyer to find out who Can's beneficiaries are , you should be more careful that you're not found out. How could you try to pay off his lawyer to change beneficiaries."

Sanem was in shock, she couldn't believe what she was hearing. His own mother.

"You're a sick woman, do you have any love in your heart, get out of here, better off, leave Istanbul and never come back or I will have you arrested.!!

Huma was in shock, he must of had me followed.

Sanem couldn't believe what she was hearing, where is her heart. Her own son.

Huma looked back at Sanem. Grabbed her purse and left.

Sanem went and hugged Aziz, she was in shock. Aziz was so upset.

SANEM: "Aziz bey, I'm sorry that you had to go through this. I don't understand why or how a mother could be so heartless to her own child"

MIRIBAN: "she's a sick woman Sanem , I guess kind of like Kerem, but in a different way."

AZIZ: "I hate to say this, but in a way I'm glad Can couldn't hear any of this, and that Emre wasn't here.

He's wiping tears away from his eyes.

MIRIBAN: " let's forget about Huma, hopefully she is out of our lives forever. Let's focus on Can and him getting better." They agreed no more discussion about what happened. "Sanem I brought you some breakfast, please eat something."

SANEM: " I will, later, right now I will just have some tea." Miriban nodded her head, but she was worried, Sanem looked pale.

Later that day Leyla and Emre came to see Can.

But they had taken Can down for more testing.

LEYLA: "Sanem, let's get something to eat, please, you don't look good. We won't be long."

SANEM: " Leyla, please, I'm fine, don't baby me, I feel fine." Sanem was getting irritated. And leyla could see it. Everything is catching up to her.

LEYLA: "ok, at least try to eat something for lunch. I can bring you something if you want."

SANEM: "if I want something I will just go get it."

Leyla was very worried, Emre noticed it too. Sanem just didn't look right. Leyla and Emre said there goodbye's and left to go back to work.

EMRE: "Leyla what are you thinking, do you think Sanem will be okay."

LEYLA: "I hope so, it looks like she's ready to have a break down, you know after my parents died, it was so traumatic for both of us, they left one morning to go see my grandmother and never made it home, they were hit that night by a drunk driver, supposedly, that's what the police think. Whoever it was, was never found they took off. It was very late at night when it happened, no witnesses, they were on a secluded road, it was hours before they found them. Sanem, closed up, she wouldn't cry, or eat, she was hardly slept, The neighborhood was very worried about her, they were always there looking out for us, until my aunt and uncle showed up. And thank god they did, they really do remind us of our parents, they're so much alike.

Sanem recovered slowly when they came.

EMRE: "wow, Leyla, I'm so sorry that you both went through that."

LEYLA: "it was hard, I just hope Can wakes up soon. I'm worried about her."

EMRE: " well, we will come here every night with dinner and sit with her until visiting hours are over. Hopefully she will eat with us here. We will get her favorite fish sandwich tonight."

Leyla looked at Emre and smiled, he took her hand and kissed it. " Leyla I love you, don't worry, we will help Sanem, she will be ok.

Aziz and Miriban, left so Aziz can get some rest, Can's accident and Huma today, wore him out. Before they left they brought Can back to his room, and the doctor came in to talk to them.

DOCTOR: " everything is looking good, his ribs are healing very nicely and fast, his leg fracture should be healed hopefully very soon. And the swelling in the brain, is much better, we will do another MRI in a couple of days, and we will determine whether we will back off with the meds. I say this again, your son had a guardian angel, it's a miracle that he is alive with only these injuries. The only thing that might worry me is when he wakes up. Will he have any brain damage. Memory loss. The way he's healing and how fast he's healing I'm hoping he will not, but we will take it day by day." They were happy with Can's update. But Sanem got a little worried about his head injury.

She didn't say anything to Aziz, she didn't want to upset him.

That evening leyla came back with Emre, they brought Sanem her fish sandwich but she barely ate, only half of it.

LEYLA: "Emre I hope Can recovers fast, because I see Sanem getting depressed. I'm very worried about her."

EMRE: " I agree, what if your aunt tried talking to her?"

LEYLA: " she did, Sanem just says, yes and ok to her too. I Hope I'm wrong."

EMRE: "I hope so too, my love. Don't worry, we will keep trying."

That evening, Sanem sat on the bed talking to Can, and telling him stories. She decided to massage his arms and shoulders and his legs the best as she could, considering he has a cast and she can't move him.

She pulled down the hospital gown, and saw the bruising he had around his rib cage, her breath caught in her throat.

SANEM: " Can, I'm so sorry, this happened, I wish it was me not you in this bed." She started crying and she kissed him softly on his rib cage and started massaging his shoulders and arms.

The Nurse from the ICU came to visit Sanem she wanted to see how she was doing.

NURSE: " good evening Sanem, how's are patient today."

SANEM: " he's doing good, the doctors are happy with his recovery so far." She told her what he said about the possible brain damage.

NURSE: " Sanem my dear, I shouldn't be saying this, but doctors always give the worst scenario, because they want to cover themselves just in case something goes wrong. I believe Can will be okay, keep talking to him, massage him like you were just doing, trust me, he will be fine."

SANEM: "Thank you Nurse ? I'm sorry your name is?"

NURSE: "Meryem"

SANEM: "Nurse Meryem, I don't how to thank you for your support, and coming to visit us."

NURSE MERYEM; " it's nothing my dear, I always visit my patients, and you my dear touched my heart, you remind me of me with my love." She smiled at Sanem, took her hand and rubbed it, "

Trust me he will be fine."

Sanem looked at her and smiled, somehow talking to Meryem, she felt more at ease. She layed down next to Can, put his arm around her and fell asleep next to him.
