The moon's blessing*(11)

I stared at Lolo , as we sat under the great oak tree near the river .

" What happened ?" I asked him getting to the point . " Nosipho , has told my grandfather about the proposal you made to me and he is not happy".

I sighed hearing that ,"what about the rest of your family ?" He looked at me with a faint smile .

" Your mother visited my parents so they agreed to let you marry me " I was excited after hearing that .

" So you really want to marry me at night ?" He asked with a frown . I nodded , " it's only for now , after everything has been taken care of , I'll give you a grand wedding ceremony in the middle of the day ".

He nodded , I took his hand gently and pulled him closer to me . " My grandfather won't allow this ceremony to happen so you better be prepared for anything " .

I nodded, I knew that old man would do everything in his power to stop the wedding . I did not plan to let him win though .

Not when I was so close to binding my bride to me . With Lolo , in my arms I felt at peace somehow .

Of cause as you know that peace would never last . The legendary family curse striked again . " Young prince you better go back to the village , that woman is planning murder " .

I was startled by that , " who is she planning to kill ?" I asked in alarm .

" Your chief grandfather"  that was all I needed to hear.  I pulled Lolo , up and began to run . " What's going on ?" He asked .

" My chief grandfather is in danger " I said running at my full speed . I urgently called the spirits of  nature to delay her .

I could not let her succeed . What I did not understand was why she was after her own husband's life .

We finally reached the village and the trees urged me to hurry . I used all the strength I had to run . Behind me Lolo , looked ready to faint .

Even though I was anxious to save my chief grandfather ,I could not neglect him .

I picked him up from the ground and ran full speed to my chief grandfather's hut .

I budged in and just then there was a sound of metal hitting the ground .

I saw it was a dagger . The woman was no where to be found . My chief grandfather , looked frightened .

I had never seen such fear adorning his face . " She truly tried to end my life , she tried to make me meet my ancestors before my time " .

He kept on repeating the same words over and over again and I knew he was in shock .

Just then a soft melody played , I looked at Lolo , and he was blowing his flute .

My chief grandfather , seemed to regain his spirit , and life appeared in his eyes again , fear fading all together .

" Are you alright ?" I asked him with a worried tone . He nodded and looked at Lolo . " Thank you grandson in law , your song has healed me " .

Lolo , bowed to show his modesty . I frowned at that , " do not bow " he looked astonished by my words .

" I'm just showing respect to my former king " he spoke softly . " You will neither bow down to me nor him or anyone , Lolo , no one is above you " .

Chief grandpa , laughed ," your just like your father child " I said nothing to refute that .

I don't know why but I did not want Lolo , to bow to anyone not even myself . " I will leave you with some protection , it seems that woman wants to stop our union by killing you " .

I frowned as I figured out her plan . She knew if chief grandfather , died then we'd have to put the wedding on hold .

" We cannot let her stop the wedding , you two are destined and nothing can break that destiny not even her " . He said laying down .

I knew he needed rest so we bid him farewell . After that day the woman tried to murder chief grandfather , again but failed .

The week passed quickly and finally it was the day of our wedding . I had on my traditional wedding clothes and I looked handsome if I do say so myself .

Since I did not recite a poem to Lolo , the day I proposed to him I decided to do it at the wedding ceremony .

We faced each other as I moved holding my nicely decorated stick . It was thick with a round head .

I began to recite a poem to him in our native tongue . I described his beauty , my love for him and how I'd hold him like a treasure in the future .

He looked bashful , which made him even more beautiful . As the ceremony continued the moon began to shine brighter and it's light reflected on only me and my queen Lolo.

It seemed to be singing it's blessings upon our union . We both looked up and thanked it .

" I object to this wedding , Olwethu , is meant to be mine !" A voice yelled from the crowd just as the ceremony was coming to an end .

Nosipho , stood there , her eyes burning with anger and hate . " You the cursed prince born of a white man's womb cannot possibly deserve him " .

I looked at her annoyed now . So what if I was born from a white man , how was that her business .

" I'm the true daughter of the soil and that alone makes me worthy of him " .

I was astonished by her words , "I'm also the true son of the soil , unlike you , our motherland had long accepted my presence in this land " .

She laughed at that , " no one can decide that but me , your so called motherland was confused when she accepted a cursed child like you " .

I was about to speak when Olwethu, beat me to it . " Silence woman ! have you no shame claiming the prince's spouse as your promised ?" His voice was still soft but was also stern .

I looked at him with love and pride in my eyes . " You have no right to disrespect my husband like that , next time you do it you will be flogged infront of the whole village ".

Hearing that Nosipho , was angry yet dared not utter a single word for a moment . " This is not over , I'll show you who is more powerful than the rest " .

With that she stormed out of the ceremony . My mother just kept looking at her fading back with fear and horror in his eyes .

The ceremony came to an end just like that and I carried my new bride to our marriage hut .

It was for our first night . Finally I could taste my beloved , what could possibly be more delicious than that .
