Mafia Kings: Roberto: Chapter 99
Mafia Kings: Roberto: Dark Mafia Romance Series #5
The helicopter took us to Hong Kong International Airport without incident.
When we reached the private jet in Hangar 32, no gunmen were waiting for us.
We boarded the plane safely with virtually nothing but the clothes on our backs.
Though we were more than an hour late, the crew said nothing.
The stewardess checked our passports. I had mine in my back pocket, and Mei-ling had also brought hers.
The British pilot asked if we still wanted to go to Tuscany. Iâd had to supply a destination when Iâd booked the flight with the private broker.
âI think weâre going to a private airfield outside Florence, but let me confirm that.â
I borrowed Mei-lingâs cell phone and called Niccolo.
âAre you alright?â he asked frantically the second he answered.
âMore than alright â Iâm on the plane as we speak.â
âGood,â he said, his voice overwhelmed with relief. âYouâre not hurt?â
âNot a scratch.â
âExcellent! Now â WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET 250 MILLION DOLLARS?!â
So he had checked the crypto account like Iâd told him.
âDonât get excited. We have to give most of it back.â
âWhat?! Why?!â
âIâll tell you when I get there. Right now, the pilotâs asking where weâre going. Should I tell him home, or â â
âNo, go to Venice. I didnât get to tell you when you called before, but thatâs where we are. Dario wanted to be with Massimo.â
âAlright, Iâll text you our ETA after I talk to the pilot. By the way, Iâll be bringing someone with me.â
âWho?â Niccolo asked. I could hear the burning curiosity in his voice.
âYouâll see. Ciao.â
âRoberto â â he said indignantly.
I hung up and turned to the pilot. âWeâre going to Venice.â
âThatâll be close to 14 hours. We should get to Marco Polo International aroundâ¦â The pilot did a few calculations in his head. ââ¦roughly 8 PM local time.â
âExcellent.â
âYou should get to your seats â weâll be taking off in just a few minutes.â
âThank you.â
I texted Niccolo ETA Venice 8 PM, then handed Mei-ling her phone as we strapped into seats facing each other.
âDo you really have to give back the money?â she asked wistfully.
âI have no interest in looking over my shoulder the rest of my life.â
âThen I would think youâre in the wrong line of business,â she teased me.
I grinned. âLet me amend that: I have no interest in looking over my shoulder for Han the rest of my life.â
âBut itâs 200 million dollars.â
âA dealâs a deal.â
âHmph,â she pouted playfully as the jet roared down the runway.
We both stared at each other the entire time, waiting in fear for an explosion â
And only breathed easily when we reached cruising altitude.
âWe didnât get blown up,â Mei-ling said, almost like it was a shock.
âNot yet, anyway,â I joked.
Once the stewardess told us we could move about freely, I got out of my seat, went over to a sofa along the cabin wall, and motioned to Mei-ling. âCome here.â
She got out of her seat and sat facing me, her legs curled up under her body.
I kissed her, and she kissed me back.
âThank you,â I whispered when I pulled away. âFor everything.â
âYouâre welcome.â She smiled sadly. âI suppose weâll be going our separate ways when we get to Venice.â
âOr⦠we could get married.â
She stared at me, shocked speechless.
âIs that you thinking about it?â I asked playfully.
âLet me get this straight: you want me⦠who betrayed you to your worst enemiesâ¦â
âYou made up for it,â I said with a smile.
âTo marry you⦠who nearly blew me up.â
âBut I didnât,â I pointed out comically.
ââ¦why?!â
âWell, I would have had to blow myself up, too.â
She pushed against my shoulder in playful indignation. âYou know what I mean!â
I became serious as I stared deep into her eyes.
âI love you. I didnât know what that truly meant until I met you. Youâre the only woman Iâve ever loved⦠and the only woman I ever want to love, from now until I die.â
Tears welled up in Mei-lingâs eyes.
âI just need to know one thing,â I said quietly. âMy family is part of the Cosa Nostra. I canât abandon them⦠which means Iâm part of the Cosa Nostra, at least for the foreseeable future.
âI know you had your issues with your father and then with Lau â but I promise you, my family is different. Iâm different. But⦠Iâll still be involved in a life you never wanted. Is that something you can live with?â
She smiled sadly. âWith anyone else⦠no. With you⦠Iâm willing to try.â
âThen marry me. I donât have a ring for you yet⦠but marry me.â
She opened her mouth to answer â
And then gave me an impish smile.
âNo.â
I suppressed a grin of my own. âMarry me.â
âNo.â
I pulled her forcefully to me and looked deep into her eyes from just a few inches away. âMarry me.â
She broke into the most beautiful smile I had ever seen.
ââ¦yes.â
We both laughed and kissed passionatelyâ¦
As our plane soared home to Italy.
