Mafia Kings: Roberto: Chapter 4
Mafia Kings: Roberto: Dark Mafia Romance Series #5
There were two of them: a dull CRACK, followed by another a second later.
The noises were out of place that I looked up when I heard them.
I didnât recognize them as gunshots at firstâ¦
Until I heard shouting downstairs and realized something was very wrong.
A foot soldier named Raimondo burst into my office. âSir, you have to come with me!â
âWhatâs wrong?â
âSomeone tried to kill the don! I have to get you to the safe room!â
My heart froze in my chest. âIs Dario alright?!â
âHeâs fine, heâs downstairs with the others â sir, please!â
Raimondo escorted me to the safe room on the first floor. It was a huge space with stone walls, no windows, and a steel door.
Dario held Alessandra in his arms as she trembled, and Adriano did the same with Bianca.
Niccolo was pacing back and forth furiously.
âThank God,â he said when he saw me.
Dario looked over Alessandraâs shoulder and gave me a subtle nod.
âWhat happened?!â I asked.
âSniper,â my twin said, keeping his voice low. âLars is hunting him down right now.â
âWhereâs Valentino?â
Niccolo looked dour. âHe wanted to search the property with the soldiers. He wouldnât stop bitching about it, so I let him go.â
âSounds like Valentino.â I glanced at Alessandra and Bianca, then whispered so they couldnât hear me. âDo you think Faustoâs behind it?â
âProbably. Unfortunately, thatâs not all.â
He told me how Massimo and the Widow had been attacked in Venice by Russian mercenaries. Massimo had killed them all; now he was on his way to retrieve the old womanâs granddaughter and take her to safety.
âHeâs alright?â I asked.
âYes.â
âThen it turned out well,â I said optimistically.
Niccolo grimaced. âJust wait until you hear the rest.â
Before Iâd entered the safe room, Niccolo had received a call from Pietro, the pilot for our private jet.
Someone â presumably more Russian mercenaries â had gone to the Venice airport and fired a rocket-propelled grenade into the hangar where our jet was housed. One wing and engine were damaged, grounding it indefinitely.
âMassimoâs going to have to get out of Venice some other way,â Niccolo said.
I was no good with military tactics, so I focused on what I knew best: numbers.
Repairing the plane would cost millions â
But there was a silver lining.
âWe have insurance,â I said.
âAt the moment, thatâs the least of my worries,â Niccolo said wryly.
âBut we have a terrorism rider, plus an allotment for rentals while our plane is repaired. I should be able to get them to provide a substitute, which could get Massimo home faster.â
âHm⦠alright, call them and set it up. But I need to know exactly where the new planeâs coming from. Right now, we have no idea who we can trust.â
âAll the information is back in my office â the insurance policy, my contactâs name â â
âThen itâll have to wait.â
âEvery single pane of glass in the house is bulletproof,â I reminded him. âRemember? 1.7 million euros for the retrofit?â
âI remember, and I donât care.â Niccolo glanced over his shoulder at Alessandra and Bianca before whispering, âThey shot through the bulletproof glass.â
âHow?!â I asked, already wondering how much of a refund I could get back.
âThey fired twice.â
That explained the two gunshots Iâd heard.
Not only that, it destroyed any chance of a refund. The small print in the contract clearly stated that the glass wasnât guaranteed to withstand multiple rounds.
Still, I wanted to return to my office, so I continued to argue. âIâm not in any danger; Lars is out there chasing them down right now. And Iâll stay away from the window â â
âNo. Your safety is too important.â
âValentino is running around playing action hero with your blessing. Are you really going to suggest Iâm in more danger behind bulletproof glass?â
Niccoloâs expression turned sour. âDonât you start bitching at me, too.â
âThen let me go do my job.â
He sighed. âFine. But take two foot soldiers with you â and be careful.â
âYou know Iâm the most careful out of all of us.â
Niccolo gave me a half-smile. âTrue.â
I immediately left the safe room to go do what I could to save Massimo.
