Chapter 48

EPILOGUE | YOU AND ME, ONE DAY

WAR OF HEARTS • hayley marshall

"Nik, are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" Khalia asked as she stood by the side of the car, looking back and forth between her brother and his baby. He was about to leave and give his baby to the only person in this world all of the Mikaelson's trust. Their sister, Rebekah.

He nods, face full of sadness. "Yes, I will be fine. Hayley will need you much more than I do."

Khalia frowned, "I don't prioritise one family member over another." She paused, looking at Klaus' raised eyebrow. "Well, not anymore." She amended.

"Be that as it may, you still threatened to use the White Oak on me if I tried to kill Hayley." Klaus reminded her pointedly, but there was no anger or hostility in his gaze. "And while I'm not mad at you, and I always knew that Hayley is important to you, that certainly opened my eyes to just how much you care about her."

"Okay, whatever." Khalia rolled her eyes, cheeks heating up at the reminder of her feelings towards Hayley. She looked for a way to change the topic of conversation. "See you later."

She bid him a last goodbye and went back upstairs.

Later on, a large crowd of people has gather for a candlelight vigil for the deceased community members. Elijah, Khalia and Hayley arrive to set a bouquet of flowers by Baby Mikaelson's spot on the memorial wall. All three immortals feeling equally devestated by the day's events.

Francesca watches as Hayley approaches the memorial. Khalia's murderous glower is hidden by her sunglasses. Her siblings told her to wait, because somehow the moonlight rings weaken Klaus and they need to figure out what exactly is happening before attacking.

Hayley breaks down in tears and kisses her fingertips before touching them to the plaque that announces the baby's faked death. Khalia, who has been standing behind her side-by-side her oldest brother, holds out a hand to Hayley, who finally stands up and takes it.

The female vampire sees Hayley's tear stained face, her heard clenching painfully at the sight. Hayley all but launches herself at Khalia before she wraps her arms around Khalia's slim middle, resting her head in the crook of the vampire's neck. Khalia stood, holding the newly turned Hybrid as she cried. Elijah stood, watching over his sister and Hayley, eyes sharply looking for any sign of danger.

On the other side, Francesca watches the two hugging with jealousy burning hotly through her veins. What did Hayley have that she didn't? What is it about the green-eyed brunette that made Khalia lower her defenses and let Hayley in freely, to take whatever she wants?

The Mikaelson's, plus Hayley, eventually returned to the empty Compound. It was almost deathly still in the aftermath of the fight. The mess made by Khalia, Elijah and Marcel's vampires hard been cleaned up by a few vampires that was trying to earn good grace with the Originals.

Khalia returned to her room before Hayley could start talking to her. She needed some breathing room and so did Hayley. Emotionally, they were both a big mess right now. Khalia had to see Hayley dead while Hayley did die. They needed some time to process things. So, Khalia kept away from Hayley.

Hours later, Klaus returned home and shortly after Khalia greeted him and was told that baby Mikaelson was now Hope Mikaelson, she escaped the Compound and fled. Well, it's not like she wasn't planning on returning, she and Hayley both just needed to get their heads back on right.

Day turned into night, hours turned into days and before Khalia knew it, a week had gone by since she's laid eyes on Hayley. She knew the female Hybrid was looking for her - both her brothers told her. But she wasn't ready to face her yet.

Following her normal nightly routine of sneaking back into the Compound via the balcony of her room - the same way she snuck out in the mornings - Khalia found a glaring and looking pissed off Hayley waiting for her, seated at the edge of the vampire's bed.

Khalia winced and turned tail to run again. Only she didnt get very far because Hayley sped to her, grabbed her by the arms and sped her against a wall, shoving her against the concrete unmercifully.

"You're avoiding me." Hayley hissed accusingly, crimson and amber eyes glaring down at her, left arm resting across Khalia's collarbones, her left hand curling into a fist, while the right hand smacked the wall next to her head.

"I'm giving you space." Khalia countered nonchalantly.

"That's practically the same thing." Hayley snapped impatiently, increasing the force of her left arm.

Khalia's lips twitched, fighting a smile at the most adorable temper tantrum she's ever seen. "Yes, but not quite."

Hayley let out a growl of frustration, eyes flashing crimson and gold. "Screw space. I don't want space, I don't need space. I want you."

"I am always here for you, Hayley." Khalia answered placidly, something in Hayley's tensed body tensing even further at the uttering of her name. "But I also know that you need to grieve your daughter. I know that she is not dead, but you still lost her all the same."

Hayley's grip faltered a bit, her voice wavering. "I will get her back."

"Does that make it hurt any less?" Khalia challenged almost tauntingly, raising a perfect brow at Hayley.

Hayley's grip on Khalia increased again, pinning the Original to the wall more firmly. Her jaw locked, "No." She admitted.

Khalia nodded, looking into those hypnotic green eyes that could bring the Mikaelson girl to her knees with a glance. She gave Hayley a pointed look, "Can to let go of me now?"

"Oh." Hayley looked down between them, clearly startled as she jumped away from Khalia, realising for the first time since she's done it, that she just restrained one of the most dangerous vampire's in the world. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."

Khalia waved her off, not even a little bothered by it. She knew by now that there was Hayley and then there was the rest of the world. And that if it was someone from the rest of the world, they would no longer be breathing, but Hayley is her One Person. That One that no one else can replace or will ever be. She allows Hayley shit that she doesn't even allow her silbings. Khalia let nothing of her thoughts show, giving Hayley a reassuring look. "It's fine. I already told you, I allow you what I would never allow other's."

Hayley bit down on her bottom lip and Khalia's mind oh-so-helpfully decided to remind her how soft and delicious those lips are beneath hers. Green eyes looking searchingly into brown ones. "Doesn't mean I should take advantage of it."

That got a wide smile and a light laugh out of Khalia, "Not even you could take advantage of me. If I felt like you were taking advantage of me, you'd have been the one with her back pushed up a wall. It's something I won't allow you."

"Then what will you allow?" Hayley asked, taking a step forward.

Khalia frowned deeply. "I don't understand."

"I mean, what do I get to do, that other people don't?" Hayley stepped closer and closer, until she was in Khalia's space bubble, her eyes flickering down to the vampire's lips, her meaning unmistakable.

Khalia sighed, looked away and took a few steps back from the Hybrid. Hurt flashed across Hayley's face and Khalia felt like a very shitty person. "Don't go there, okay?"

Hayley looked away too, wondering what happened in the time between when she kissed Khalia and now. Why would the vampire allow it then, even kissing half the life out of her when she turned back for a second kiss, but was pulling away from it now? A horrifying thought flashed across Hayley's mind.

Hayley's words came up difficult, almost choking her. "Do you find me repulsive as a Hybrid?"

Khalia's head snapped to her, because how the fuck did she come to that conclusion? and she immediately shook her head firming, her voice leaving no room for doubt or "No."

"Then why don't you call me sweetheart anymore?" Hayley's chest constricted, hearting aching. Her tears was suddenly a little teary. "You've never corrected yourself before."

Khalia looked stunned for a long moment, then she shook it off and inhaled deeply before admitting, "I wasn't sure if you'd still want me to."

Hayley frowned deeply, wondering where that came from because she's always loved her nickname the Demon Mikaleson gave her. It made her feel special. "Why wouldn't I want you to?"

"Because you had to give your daughter away who almost died. You-" Khalia's words died in her throat as she remembered that absolutely anguishing hours that she spent thinking this was how her eternity was going to be - without Hayley in it. "You did die."

"None of that changes my feelings for you." Hayley swallowed thickly, needing the words to be said. "And if I can have nothing else from you, then I at least want to be your sweetheart."

"Very well." Khalia nodded, hiding how completely ecstatic she was with that fact. She paused, wondering whether she should say it or not. Then, after a second, she dropped her walls of concrete and cement and bared her broken and bruised heart to the one person who deserves it. Just this once wouldn't hurt, right? "Hayley, I may not have been by your side for your last breath, but I was by your side for your first breath into immortality and I vow to you, right here and right now, that I will be by your side as you take all of your remaining breaths for as long as I can."

"Khalia . . ." Hayley trailed off, heart in her throat and stomach fluttering with butterflies. How can the Original girl just say things like that and then still expect Hayley to give up on them?

Hayley was at war with herself, but eventually the part that wants Khalia won and she decided to just go for it like she did earlier.

When their lips touched, it was like she could feel the feelings thrumming between them like a living thing - bright, beautiful, pure and true. It was all heat and passion, desire and need, coming together and creating a tidal wave of feelings that the two girl's started to drown in as Hayley's hands started to wander.

It was with great effort and self-control that would make Elijah proud, that Khalia pulled away, just as out of breath as her Hybrid. Khalia shook her head, "Not like this, sweetheart. Not while you are drowning grief."

Hayley looked frantic and more than a little desperate, her voice pleading. "I need you. I can't loose you too."

"You'll never loose me." Khalia swore to her honestly. There was nothing on this earth that would make her voluntarily leave her sweetheart. "I'll always be right here for you, but only as a friend. Until it's safe for Hope to come back or until you're in a better head space than you are right now."

Hayley breath in deeply, looking so hopeful and longing that it made Khalia's heart ache. "So, you and me, one day then?"

"Yes, sweetheart, one day." Khalia promised sincerely, because up until she saw Hayley's lifeless body, she didn't realize just how much she wanted that as well. She leaned forward, placing a kiss on her forehead. Hayley's tensed body relaxed when she heard her nickname slipping from Khalia's lips and a content, almost giddy, warmth filled her to the brim as her brain short circuits from the soft forehead kiss the Original gave her.

Hayley bit down on her lip, wondering if she can push her luck with Khalia one last time. "Can I sleep here with you tonight?"

Khalia was startled so badly that if she was walking, she would have fell over her own two feet. She swallowed, brown eyes locking on green ones, gazing intently. Khalia pursed her lips for a moment, then asked, "Just for tonight?"

"Just for tonight," Hayley nodded in reluctant agreement, then a somewhat cheeky smile spread on her lips. "Until one day."

"Okay." Khalia agreed, nodding her head and knowing with every part of her broken heart that she can never deny Hayley anything.

Khalia and Hayley got into the Original's bed, settling under the covers and cuddling close. Hayley fell asleep on Khalia's shoulder, listening to the soothing beat of her heart. Khalia fell asleep with a protective arm around Hayley's shoulders, the other hand's fingers was entwined with one of Hayley's.

The Mikaelson's would grieve and heal, plan and prepare, and when the time is right, they will strike down any enemy that dares to come at either them or the baby. They knew, there is still more enemies, war, allies and challenges to come.

After all, this is just the beginning of Hayley and Khalia's forever.
