The Housemaid: Part 1 – Chapter 26
The Housemaid: An absolutely addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist
We end up having a great time at dinner. We donât discuss Nina again, and the conversation flows easily, especially after we get to our second bottle of wine. I canât remember the last time Iâve had such a nice evening. I feel sad when itâs coming to an end.
âThank you so much for this,â I tell him as he pays the check. Iâm afraid to even look at it. Just the wine alone probably cost a small fortune.
âNo, thank .â His face is almost glowing. âI had a great time. I havenât had this much fun inâ¦â He clears his throat. âAnyway, it was really fun. Just what I needed.â
He stands up after signing the check, and sways on his feet. We drank a of wine tonight. Which wouldnât be the greatest idea under the best circumstances, but I just remembered heâs got to drive us back to Long Island. On the highway.
Andrew must realize what Iâm thinking. He holds onto the table to steady himself. âI shouldnât be driving,â he acknowledges.
âNo,â I say. âProbably not.â
He rubs his face. âWe still have that reservation at The Plaza. What do you think?â
Well, it doesnât take a genius to know this is a huge mistake. Weâre both drunk, his wife is out of town, and he apparently hasnât had sex in a while. And I havenât had sex in a much, much longer while. I should say no. This canât end well.
âI donât think itâs a great idea,â I mumble.
Andrew lays a hand on his chest. âIâll be a perfect gentleman. I swear. Itâs a suite. There are two beds.â
âI know, butâ¦â
âYou donât trust me?â
I donât trust . Thatâs the bigger problem.
âWell, I canât drive us back to the island tonight.â He looks down at his Rolex. âIâll tell you what. Iâll get us two separate rooms at The Plaza.â
âOh my God, that will cost a fortune!â
He waves a hand. âNah, Iâll get a deal because I host clients there sometimes. Itâs fine.â
Andrew is definitely too drunk to drive, and I probably am too, even if I wasnât terrified to get behind the wheel of his expensive car. I suppose we could get a taxi back to the island, but he hasnât suggested the idea. âAll right, as long as we have separate rooms.â
He hails a taxi to get us over to The Plaza hotel. As we slide into the backseat of the yellow cab, my white dress again rides up my thigh. What is wrong with the stupid dress? Iâm trying so hard to be good, but this dress wonât let me. I grab at the hem to pull it down again, but before I can, I notice Andrew taking another look. And this time when I catch him, he grins at me.
âWhat?â he says. Boy, he must be really drunk.
âYouâre looking at my legs!â
âSo?â His grin widens. âYou have great legs. And thereâs no harm in looking.â
I smack him in the arm and he holds his shoulder, pretending to be wounded. âWeâre getting separate rooms. Donât forget that.â
But his brown eyes meet mine across the backseat of the taxi. And for a moment, Iâm having trouble breathing. Andrew wants to be faithful to Nina. Iâm sure of it. But sheâs in a different state, heâs drunk, and the two of them have been having problemsâmaybe for a long time. As far as I can see, sheâs been horrible to him the whole time Iâve been working there. He deserves so much better.
âWhat are looking at?â he says in a low voice.
I swallow a lump in my throat. âNothing.â
âYou look beautiful tonight, Millie,â he breathes. âIâm not sure if I told you that. But you should know.â
âAndrewâ¦â
âI justâ¦â His Adamâs apple bobs. âLately, Iâve just felt soâ¦â
Before he can get any more words out, the cab jerks us to the right. I never put on my seatbelt and I find my body thrust against his. He catches me before I bash my head against the window. His body presses against me, his breath on my neck.
âMillie,â he whispers.
And then he kisses me.
And God help me, I kiss him back.
