Chapter 125
When His Eyes Opened
Chapter 125 Avery pulled out her phone and called Cole.
âHello? Avery?â Cole answered.
âCassandraâs dead. Did you know?â
âWhat?! What do you mean sheâs dead?! Iâm at the hospital for a checkupâ¦. She was fine when I
talked to her on the phone last night,â
âDid you fight?â âNo!â Cole exclaimed.
A few seconds later, almost as if he had remembered something, he added, âI remember now.
Cassandra was here when Uncle Elliot came home for dinner last time. It wasnât a pleasant night.
Uncle Elliot told her that she wonât have much longer to live, and sheâs been terrified about that
conversation ever since-â
âThatâs impossible! I was with Elliot all night. He didnât do anything!â
Cole sighed, then said, âWhy do you lose all reason every time Uncle Elliotâs involved? Iâm just saying
what I know. Youâre the only one Iâd tell this to. If the police asked me, thereâs no way Iâ d mention
thisâ¦â
âListen up, Cole Foster! You better not have anything to do with Cassandraâs death. The police will get
to the bottom of this!â
âIt wasnât me. I donât have a motive! I wouldnât resort to murder even if we got into a fight,â Cole
responded coldly, then added, âAvery⦠Ever since you fell in love with Uncle Elliot, Iâve become
nothing to you.â
âPlease keep that bullsh*t to yourself! What was I to you when you were messing around with
Cassandra behind my back?!â Avery snapped, then furiously hung up the phone.
âWho were you talking to?â asked the officer.
âCole Foster. Heâs Cassandra Tateâs boyfriend,â Avery said.
She gave the officer Coleâs number, then said, âCassandraâs been hanging out with him a lot recently.
Iâm sure he knows why she killed herself.â
Avery walked out of the police station that afternoon and took a cab to her motherâs place.
After reporting the news of Cassandraâs death to Laura, Avery muttered, âI couldnât recognize her,
Mom⦠It was just all blood⦠I couldnât see her featuresâ¦.â
Laura wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter and said, âDonât be scared, Avery. It was her life! It
had nothing to do with us! All we need to do is live our own lives!â
âCole said that Elliot did itâ¦â Avery said. âI donât believe it! Elliot would never commit murder!â
âDid you ask him?â Laura asked. âEven if it was him, Iâm sure he had his reasons.â
âCome on, Mom. Thereâs never a reason to kill someone. If Cassandra broke the law, then the law
should be the one to deal with her.â
âDid the law do anything about her uncleâs crimes?â Laura said, then held Averyâs hands in hers and
added, âI didnât say that murder isnât wrong. Iâm just saying that Cole might not be telling the truth.â
Avery quickly composed herself and said, âI just dropped by to tell you this⦠Iâm leaving now ⦠I need
to see Elliot.â
âIâll take you there,â Laura said. âYouâre not in your right mind right now. Iâm worried.â
Avery had ordered Elliot to be on bed rest for at least a week, and so, he was obediently resting at
home.
Avery arrived at the Foster mansion at two in the afternoon.
The sight of her aloof expression and pale complexion made his heart tighten in his chest.
âI need to talk to you, Elliot,â Avery said as she took a seat next to him.
Elliotâs large hand clasped Averyâs small one. His hand was like a lionâs large paw. It wrapped around
hers in a gesture of reassurance.
Avery was not used to the affectionate act and withdrew her hand on reflex.
After a few seconds of pondering, she tried to ease into the subject but ended up getting straight to the
point.
âCassandraâs dead. Did you have anything to do with it?â
This was always the straightforward, no-nonsense way that she got along with Elliot.
â¢Elliotâs eyes darkened, and his voice was chilling as he asked, âWhy arenât you asking about who was
trying to kill me last night? Is Cassandra Tateâs life more important than mine?â
Cassandraâs death had taken up so much of Averyâs mind that day that she almost forgot about the
events of the night before.
TIT
âWho was it?!â she asked with fiery eyes. âDid you find out who was behind it?â
âWould you still feel sad about her death if I told you it was Cassandra?â Elliot asked as he fixed his
eyes on Avery.
He watched as her expression went from one of shock to suspicion, then turned into anxiety.
âSo⦠You really had something to do with Cassandraâs death,â Avery said through the lump in her
throat. âWas there no other way to go about it? Why did you have to go to such extremes?â
âDonât look at me like that, Avery,â Elliot said as the earlier tenderness disappeared from his face. âIâll
send whoever crosses me straight to hell. Iâve always been like that.â
