Chapter 116
When His Eyes Opened
Chapter 116 Elliot glanced up at Averyâs fÄ ce, then said in a hoarse voice, âThank you.â
The sweater felt more comfortable and warm than he had expected.
Avery was shocked by how good he looked in it.
She could not decide if it was the quality of the sweater, or if he was just that good looking. She picked
up the paper bag and pulled out a gift box.
âI also got you this just in case you didnât like the sweater,â she said.
Elliot stared at the box in her hand.
âItâs a lighter,â Avery explained quickly. âI didnât know what else to get you so I got this. Itâs practical and
you could probably use it. You shouldnât smoke too much, though. Itâs bad for you.â
Then, she placed the box in Elliotâs hands.
Elliot opened the box, pulled out the lighter, and sparked a light.
âIâm not a heavy smoker,â he said in a sultry voice. âI only smoke when Iâm stressed out.â
Averyâs brows raised in surprise as she said, âYou were always smoking when I was living at your
place.â
âThatâs because you were always driving me mad,â Elliot answered.
Avery had no answer for that.
âLetâs go out for some air,â Elliot said.
He was feeling a little warm.
The heater was on in the restaurant and drops of sweat were beginning to form on his forehead.
âSure. Let me help,â Avery said as she made her way behind Elliotâs wheelchair.
âItâs fine. Itâs an electric wheelchair,â Elliot said as he began to roll out of the building at the push of a
button.
Avery caught up to him and said, âYou always had your bodyguard wheel you around before.â
âThere was no need for me to do anything while they were around.â
âI could help you, tooâ¦â
âItâs fine.â
âI want to,â Avery said, then grabbed onto the handles of the wheelchair and pushed Elliot outside.
âHow are your legs? What did the doctors say?â
âThe right oneâs bruised, and the left oneâs broken.â
Avery felt a sharp pang in her heart.
âDid it hurt a lot?â
âIt was okay.â
The cold air welcomed them as they exited the building.
Avery wheeled Elliot to the side of the road, then placed her coat over his legs.
âWhy didnât you reply to my message?â she said after finally finding the courage.
She had found it hard to sleep for a few nights when she had not received a reply to her
message.
Their faces were close, and their breaths intermingled.
Elliot did not want to tell Avery that he had a relapse and that he had only recently become stable after
a few weeks of antidepressants.
After that, he found out from Ben that Avery was busy knitting a sweater for him, so he did not want to
bother her.
âForget it. I guess it didnât warrant a reply anyway. It was the first snow of the year, so I impulsively sent
you a message,â Avery said.
She got to her feet, then moved to the back of the wheelchair and wheeled it along the street.
âWhy didnât you come to see me?â Elliot asked suddenly.
âJun said you were too proud. I was afraid that you wouldnât want to see me until the scratches on your
face recovered.â
âYou only sent me one message the whole time.â
âYou didnât respond the first time, so I thought you didnât want to hear from me.â
âI did, though,â Elliot croaked.
âWhat?â Avery asked in bewilderment as her heart began to race. âElliot, what did youââ
âThereâs a bakery over there,â Elliot interrupted as he pointed at a store in front of them, changing the
subject. âI feel like eating cake.â
Averyâs attention was successfully diverted.
âOh, letâs go get a cake, then!â she said, then added after a brief pause, âDidnât you hate dessert?â
âItâs fine to have some on my birthday.â
âThatâs true. Birthdays should be a little more special.â
At the bakery, the shop readily offered her assistance and asked them to pick a cake. Elliot glanced at
Avery and said, âYou pick.â
âShould we get a mousse cake?â Avery asked. âA butter cake might be too sweet.â
Elliot turned to the shop assistant and said, âWeâll take the mousse cake.â
âOf course, Sir,â responded the shop assistant. âWhat size would you like?â
Elliot turned back to Avery again and asked, âWhat size should we get?â âHow many people are coming
to the party?â Avery asked.
