Chapter 23

The Way I Remember You

We're Broken People

He had never been the best at letting go.

And ever since he met her, centuries ago, he had clung on to her close, never once loosening his grip.

Because he was afraid to lose her, afraid that if he stopped holding on so tightly, afraid that if he stopped searching for those eyes, he would never see her again.

But maybe it was time to let go.

Let her live her own life, set her free.

All these years, he had convinced himself that it was fate, it was their destiny to be together, but what if it was him all along?

After all, he was the one who was always searching for her, always seeking her - his one true love, his soulmate, reincarnation after reincarnation, he had always found her. Regardless what her name was, where she was, he could never forget those warm, brown eyes.

Because they reminded him of home-no, she was his home.

And he told her that, life after life, again and again.

But she would never remember.

And all he could do was find her each life, and they would fall in love all over again, and she was in all his best memories.

But he would lose her too, time and time again, and he'd be left alone again.

And when he found her in her next incarnation, he would be the only one left with their memories.

She didn't have to be trapped in a endless, eternal cycle with him.

"I won't forget you, I will never forget you."

She had always said that, and this time, she was saying it again.

"I'll always be there for you."

"How can you? You're human and I- I'm-" He was choking on his words now,  it happened every lifetime, and it was happening again. But maybe if he pushed her away, let go, this would be the last time it would happen.

But he couldn't let go.

No matter how hard he tried, some part of him urged him to catch onto something, anything to hold on. It broke his heart every time she left, but the thought of leaving her broke his heart even more.

"Do you believe in reincarnation?"

Her words shocked him, and as he looked at her, standing there with those very same eyes he could never forget, he felt a single tear slide down his cheek.

Blinking furiously, he lifted a hand to wipe the tear away, but as he blinked, he couldn't stop the second tear from falling. And then another. And another. And before he knew it, he was sobbing into his hands, his shoulders shaking violently with each breath.

Why, why did it always have to turn out like this? Why did she have to forget every time he had found her again? Why...did he have to be immortal?

All of a sudden, he felt hands brushing away the tears on his cheeks, hands running through his hair, hands pulling him close against her, and he let out a sob.

How many times had this happened now?

"I'll find you again...and again, every single lifetime, so don't cry, because I'll always be here, I'll always remember you."

And he believed her, as long as she had this life, she would remember him.

But she would never remember him in the next.

She would never be able to remember him the same way he remembered her.

He had never forgotten, from the very first time they met 800 years ago, when she took his once tiny hands in her own equally as tiny ones, and smiled.
