The Kiss

Finally, I was able to avoid Daniel until I got home. I was so relieved when I got to my door step peacefully.

I rang the doorbell, waiting for someone to open the door so I could make my way into the house. I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw who had opened the door for me.

"Aaaah! Sister Kemo!!" I exclaimed excitedly and rushed to hug her. I jumped on her and hugged her tight.

"I missed you soooo much. You had no idea. It felt like we had been separated for decades!" I spat out.

"I missed you too my darling sister, Tega" She gushed and planted a kiss on my forehead.

I entered the house and met my mother in the living room, watching baking competitions on the channel, FOOD.

As soon I shut the door, her gaze left the TV and fell on mine as she beamed happily at me.

"Suprise, darling" She smiled.

"Migwe ma" I greeted, then turned to Sister Kemo and spoke, "OMG!! Why didn't you tell me you were coming back to Enugu?!"

"I wanted it to be a surprise. Go and change fast, I have so much to tell you", then she leaned in closer and whispered "For starters, I have a boyfriend." My eyes grew wide and she could obviously see my excitement and curiousity.

I ran upstairs to my room and changed into a yellow t-shirt and a jeans knicker.

I was about to come out of the room when Sister Kemo barged in.

"There's something called knocking you know!" I told her.

"Yeah but I chose to ignore that, so come let me gist you." She said, and patted a spot beside her for me to seat as she sat on my bed.

"Well, first, his name is Mike and–" She said but I caught her off.

"Where did you guys meet?" I asked.

"In church and we kept in touch ever since. I guess you could say there were sparks at our first meet." She said, smiling.

"Aaawww, cute" I gushed, "Is he fair? Is he fine? where's he from? Did he happen to be a native doctor in his village? Was his great great great great great great grandfather a native doctor? Is he–"

"Easy" She laughed,"Yes, he's fair and so handsome. He's an Edo boy, from Benin and he's a third year student. No, he's not a native doctor and I don't even know about his grandfather, talk of his great great great great whatever".

"Have you told mummy and daddy about Mike?" I asked.

"Well, I told mum but not dad. I'll tell him when he gets back." She said.

"Okay".

I walked into the school building in my casual wear. We were done with exams after all and the school permitted us to bring our phones, If we had any and put on mufti but insisted we wear decent clothes.

I came to the school late because my family and I stayed up to 11:00 PM celebrating Sister Kemo's safe return.

As I walked into the class and to my seat, I couldn't help but notice a person's intense stare at me. Suddenly I heard Omega's voice but he directed his statement to someone else.

"I'm talking and you're busy looking at a girl".

I turned back and saw Daniel looking annoyed at Omega.

I got to my seat and turned around to greet Kemi who was speaking to Rosemary.

"Good morning Kemi" I greeted excitedly, awaiting his response so as to tell him the news of Sister Kemo's arrival.

He hissed at me and turned back to Rosemary. This action startled me, Kemi has never acted this way before.

"Kemi, what happened?" I asked.

"Tega, I'm disappointed in you" He said, stood up and walked out of the class.

"What did I do?" I asked Rosemary and all she did was shrug.

I turned to Zane.

"Why is Kemi mad at me?" I asked him.

He turned to me and I could see different mix of feelings swirling in his eyes.

He looked so angry I thought he would strangle me.

"You kissed him" He said and walked out of the class after Kemi.

"I w-what?"

I went to the second roll and sat on Kemi's seat.

"KC what happened? Kemi's disappointed in me and Zane's mad at me." I said.

"Rosemary said she saw you and Daniel kiss after school yesterday but I don't believe that. You've been snubbing Daniel since the beginning of this term." I looked at her in shock.

"Why would Rosemary say something like that?" I asked.

"Don't know, she even showed us a video. But seriously, do you like him?" She asked.

"Nooo!!" I yelled,"Uuh! I need to set things straight with Zane and Kemi".

"Kemi, I need to talk to you" I told him, sitting grabbing a seat to sit with him at his locker.

It was yet another free period and just about a few students remained in class. There are no classes today because those who had to do rehearsals for performances at the school's Christmas party were busy.

"Tega, I'm just so disappointed in you. How could you? You said you were over him!" He said.

"I am over him. It's fake, whatever video it was. Fake! I would never kiss him. Infact, he offered me a gift yesterday and I rejected it." I replied.

"Exactly! You rejected the gift and kissed him Instead!" He said.

"No! I did not! Honestly, Kemi, you've known me for about two or three years now and you're accusing me of kissing Daniel? Am I that stupid to you?" I asked, about to tear up.

"Okay, since you don't believe that there's a video I'll show you" He said.

He reached for Rosemary's locker and grabbed her phone, went to gallery and tapped on a video.

In the video I had rejected Daniel's gift, he said me being nice would only make him fall harder and I turned around and gave him death glares. In the video, instead of going home immediately like I actually did, I turned around, ran to Daniel and kissed him on the lips.

I stared at the phone as the video came to a pause.

Daniel had just entered the class and I dragged him to Kemi's seat.

"Say it! Tell Kemi I didn't kiss you! Let the truth be revealed." He smiled at me, dropped the cupcake he held in his hands and spoke, "You sure about that? It felt pretty real to me".

I just stood there totally shocked at what I had just heard.

Is this really Daniel speaking?

I turned to Kemi, "It's a lie! I didn't kiss him. I'm so disappointed in you. How can you not trust me! Your best friend! Kemi you're an idiot!!" I yelled at him angrily, tears streaming down my cheeks.

I marched out of the class and bumped into Rosemary. I looked at her, getting more and more angry.

"YOU LIAR!!" I yelled and slapped her. That didn't satisfy me. I pounced on her and beat her up. It came to my advantage that she couldn't fight.

Soon, students gathered round us and my classmates pulled me away from her.

I could see Kemi staring at me at the back of crowd, doing absolutely nothing but staring and by his side was Zane. I could see the sadness in his eyes.

How would I face him with all these rumors. And he doesn't even know I like him yet. Now he thinks I'm with Daniel. Gosh!

"Leave me alone!!" I yelled and ran to the back of the school. I just sat there, crying.

Wondering if I had just lost my only true friend.

Was he really my friend to begin with? He doesn't trust me!
