Chapter 40

Kemi's stay

TEGA

KEMI'S POV:

I lay on the bed, still sleeping but was woken up by the bright light that reflected from the window.

I could feel someone in the room by the window, so I sat up straight on the bed and used my right hand to rub my sleepy eyes to enable me see the person clearly.

"Good morning" I heard a calm feminine voice say to me. I rubbed my eyes more and to my excitement, it was Tega.

"Good morning to you too" I said, smiling at her, although she didn't seem to hear me.

I decided to gain her attention in a fun way. I touched my left arm gently, and lay on the bed. I squinted my eyes and began to groan in pain.

"Uuuuuuh!! My arm, it hurts. It hurts real bad" I bellowed.

"Uuuuuuuuh!!" I yelled even louder.

Immediately, Tega turned to my direction and ran towards me.

"OMG!! Kemi are you okay?" She asked, looking like as if she was about to burst into tears.

"No!" I bellowed"You didn't answer me when I replied your morning greetings".

"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't ha-Wait! What?!" She looked at me, her sparkly black eyes looking perplexed.

I burst into laughter.

"Uh! Kemi!" She yelled, and hit me lightly on my chest.

"I'm awesome right" I said, expecting her to say what she always does.

"Silly!" She said, "By the way, my mum's calling you downstairs. It's really late and you haven't eaten breakfast".

"Really?" I raised a brow, "What time is it?".

"It's exactly 9:00 AM" She said, looking at the wall clock in the room.

"Whoa! It's that late?" I said and she nodded, then, walked out of the room. I tried to stand up but I still felt pain in the knees because I had a minor injury there when I got shot.

I bore the pain stoically, because I didn't want Tega to worry.

As I passed the narrow hall heading for the stairs I could hear a familiar singing voice. I decided to follow the music and find out who was sanging. No doubt it was Tega.

I leaned my ear on the door and listened quietly to her lovely singing voice. I didn't understand a thing she sang because it was in another language. I'm Yoruba and obviously she isn't too.

"Doh Oghene Migwo, migwo

Solo bru miyeruwe, miyeruwe

Oghene miyeruwe doh

Wekobiro.

Doh Oghene Migwo, migwo

Solo Bru miyeruwe, miyeruwe

Oghene miyeruwe doh

Wekobiro" I heard her sing until a minute later I couldn't hear her anymore.

"Huh?" I leaned in closer and the door moved backwards. I could see a startled Tega.

"W-what are you doing here?" She asked.

"Listening to your voice. What song were you singing?" I asked her.

"It's one of my favorite gospel songs by Monica Ogah. It's called Oghene Migwo, so obviously it's sung in Urhobo language." She said to me.

"Mm hmm, nice. You'll teach me the song" I told her, smiling. She just nodded and walked downstairs and I followed trying not to limp.

"Good morning ma" I greeted her. I looked around the dining room and noticed the absence of Tega's father. He had probably gone to work.

Our school instructed the students not to come for the rest of the week especially after hearing about my incident. I wasn't the only one who was badly injured.

I remembered what happened. It was school dismissal for all the classes but the exam classes were exempted because we were to stay till 4:00 PM for extra lessons.

I walked with Omega, Zane and Daniel to a shop near the school to buy some snacks and few minutes later I heard gun shot.

People around the area began to scream and run and I wasn't an exemption. Omega, Daniel and Zane left me behind. Suprisingly, the armed men were fast runners and they caught up to me. They shot me in my left arm and some students fell unconscious as a result of how the stampede had affected them.

Luckily, I was able to make my way to our classroom.

When I regained consciousness in the hospital, I wasn't in anyway surprised that neither my dad nor my step mum came to the hospital to see me. If not for Tega's parents, I'm pretty sure my dad would have left me to die.

I took a seat beside Tega and I watched as she stood up to serve me breakfast.

This should be fun, and one day I would make her serve me breakfast in bed.

"Thank you" I managed to say, trying not to mention how she reminded me of Cinderella and her step sisters as her mum was there.

I looked closely at the Ludo board, fully concentrated as I sat on the floor of living room with Tega sitting opposite me.

"How do they play this game again sef? I've forgotten" Tega said, scratching her head nonchalantly.

I chuckled "If you don't know how to play why do you have it?".

"Mm, Incase if I get lucky and find someone who would teach me how to play. You don't know that it's money that they used to buy this thing" She said, looking serious.

"Okay oo" I said, raising my right hand in surrender.

"I'm booooored" I whined, probably like a little kid.

"What do you want to do then?" She asked.

"Ball! I want to watch football" I said.

"No, no, no. That stuff's gonna last for hours and I have a show I want to watch in 30 minutes time" She pouted.

"Did I mention how cute you look right now" I told her. Truthfully, she was.

"Whatever" She said and sat on a sofa.

"Kemi dear!" I heard Tega's mother call shortly after.

"Yes ma!" I replied, standing up and going to answer her.

"Your dad just called... He wants you to go back home tomorrow" Her mother said.

What?! I knew what he was going to do. He would probably tell me how foolish and useless I was to have allowed armed men shoot me with a gun. He would probably scold me for not running fast enough and then use his belt to whip me on my butt. Knowing my father, he would probably remove the cast on my left hand.

"Ma please, can't I stay here. Please ma, for this week. Please ma. I know my father, he's going to treat me badly not minding my state. Ma please, he would maltreat me and might even isolate me from everyone I know. He's capable of doing anything" I pleaded, on my knees now as I tried forcing tears from rolling down my cheeks. I really didn't want to go, I just got here.

She looked at me confused and I just began to beg her and cry. Finally, she heeded to my pleas and agreed to help me convince my father to let me stay.

I wiped my tears and walked to the living room.

"What happened?" Tega asked immediately she saw me and began running towards me.

"Nothing. It's fine" I told her, it really was. Right now anyways.

"Are you sure? You can tell me" She said.

"Nothing much. Just asked your mum to help me convince my dad to let me stay at your place for the rest of the week" U explained.

"Oh" Was all she said.

We stood there with an akward silence that we rarely experienced. My eyes travelled to the TV.

"GOAL!!" I yelled and moved around the living room filled with Joy.

"What?" She asked looking confused.

"See na. Chelsea VS Man United. Chelsea just scored them, 2-0" I said.

"You're welcome. I changed the channel." She said.

"Thanks, don't worry I'll let you watch your show on my phone later" I said, my attention on the football game.

I sat on the sofa and Tega sat besides me. I looked at her and smirked. She was watching the football game as well and I was pretty sure she would fall asleep few minutes from now.
