This phrase was in the letter from Miles' friend Takumi in which he told Miles and the Colonel about his secret; he saw Alaska the night she died. He felt guilty because he saw the drunken state she was in but didn't quite think about her driving to the graveyard to bring her dead mother flowers. My heart always breaks after reading this quote. I can only imagine what each of the boys are feeling; Takumi feeling guilty and sad and Miles is broken hearted over someone he never really got to love.
