Chapter 78
Alpha's Rejected Mate Returns as Queen
78 The Parents Meet
Selma Payneâs POV:
Honestly, it was a little awkward the moment we switched back.
I wanted to return ten minutes ago and give myself two tight slaps to wake up that impulsive little girl.
This wasnât some mushy idol drama. Was it necessary?
Thinking back to my immature actions, I felt embarrassed!
I couldnât bear it and squatted down to hug myself. Then, I shouted in embarrassment, âDonât look at me! Donât laugh! Quickly go away!â
Aldrich wouldnât leave. He also squatted down and took me into his arms. He smiled and said, âIâm very touched, baby. This is the first time youâve said you love me so passionately.â
âThatâs what Maxine said!â I shrieked and tried to avoid the truth. âIt has nothing to do with me!â
âAlright, alright, it was Maxine who said it.â Aldrich laughed as he surrendered. âAlthough she only read your heart, everything that happened was said by Maxine. It has nothing to do with you, okay?â
âOh... â
I sat on the ground, discouraged, and said in frustration, âI feel like a little girl whoâs watched too many TV shows. Iâm so rash, and I donât care about anything else. How embarrassing!â
Aldrich kissed my cheek and said, âThereâs nothing to be embarrassed about, my dear. Isnât it normal to express your love? Itâs just like how we tell each other that we love each other. So you and I will both feel happy.â
âIâm happy,â I said. âBut itâs still embarrassing! I wasnât thinking about those words, but Maxine said them like she was reading a sonnet from a primary school student!â
Aldrich couldnât hold it in any longer. He hugged me and laughed out loud in the sea of flowers.
After tidying up the plants we had crushed â I hope the gardener wonât tell Kara â we set off to find my father.
Unfortunately, my father was receiving a guest, which happened to be Duke Frank.
âIt seems that we are not needed,â Aldrich said. âFather will take care of this.â
However, my father had someone lead us into the meeting room. Seeing his bright smile, which was the same as Duke Frankâs, I anticipated what the next topic would be.
âThis is a little sudden,â I quietly told Aldrich.
âI didnât expect our parents to meet so soon. I hope they donât want us to get married next month.â
Aldrich squeezed my hand and said, âActually, I canât ask for more.â
I glared at him, and we sat on the sofa together. My father was opposite me, and Duke Frank was on my left.
âLook at this pair of lovebirds,â the Duke said resentfully. âThey canât take my eyes off each otherâs faces even a moment.â
I was a little embarrassed and let go of Aldrichâs hand, but he took it back.
âAlright, Devin, give the children some space.â My father stopped Duke Frank, even though he was also smiling like a sunflower.
âYou know, Your Majesty, Iâm just too happy.â The Dukeâs eyes were a little wet. âFrom the moment I received the good news this morning, Iâve looked at Aldrich like Iâm in a dream. My silly son has fallen in love. And the person heâs in love with is your daughter! Moon Goddess! Is it because you canât bear to see an old man like me think about it day and night that youâve given him this love?â
âThank you, Moon Goddess, for letting me meet Aldrich,â Aldrich and I looked at each other and smiled. âOtherwise, your son might have been alone for the rest of his life.â
The atmosphere in the meeting room was very lively. We chatted for a while and got down to business.
âDevin and I suspect that, although a witch is controlling Lennon, he has not lost his consciousness,â my father said. âOn the contrary, he is trying to send us a distress signal.â
âIn other words,â I said thoughtfully. âThe southern Duke knows the truth, but he canât speak for some reason?â
âYes, and so we decided to do a simple examination of Lennon. Weâve already invited him to the palace, but Carolyn is always by his side. Your mother is entertaining them so she can send Carolyn away at the right time.â
This meant that my father had already confirmed that a witch had possessed Carolyn. Otherwise, he would have inspected Carolyn and the southern Duke together to find clues about her witchcraft.
âFrom now on, youâll see her often at school, child,â my father said worriedly. âDonât get into a direct conflict with her. The witchâs power of pretending to be Carolyn is unfathomable. You might get hurt.â
âI understand, Father,â I said. âBesides, we still need to find clues behind her through the fake Carolyn. So I wonât do anything that will alert the enemy.â
âThereâs also the marriage proposal,â my father said. âLennon seemed forced by Carolyn to propose her marriage to Aldrich. Although we donât know what the witch is thinking, we will reject it.â
To be honest, Iâd already made preparations for my fatherâs advice to accept Aldrich and Carolynâs âfake engagementâ so that it would be easier for us to investigate her.
This was a bit comedic, but one had to be prepared for the worst in the face of an accident.
So I didnât expect my father to say this and was a little surprised for a moment.
