Chapter 63
Alpha's Rejected Mate Returns as Queen
63 Negligence
Selma Payneâs POV:
âSpeaking of this... âMy mother said, âIt seems like Lennon already has a candidate for a son-in-law.â
âSo soon?â I couldnât understand. âIs he that assured about Carolynâs current situation? Thereâs already concrete evidence of her magic fluctuations, and as a father, heâs still in the mood to arrange a blind date for his daughter?â
âThereâs something wrong with Lennon. He wasnât like this last year when he brought Carolyn to the Moonlight Festival,â my father said with a frown. âHe was a kind father, and he stuck to his principles. Carolyn was also a polite lady who kept a low profile. The father and daughter pair had changed too much. Iâm worried that Lennon might have been affected by black magic.â
âThatâs impossible!â My mother exclaimed. âLennon is such a powerful warrior. Even a legendary wizard lost to him.â
âBut Dorothy didnât sense any magic fluctuations from the southern Duke. Once witchcraft is performed, there will be magical fluctuations left behind. No matter how good the concealment spell is, it canât hide from a divination witch with superb insight.â
âThis is where the problem lies.â My father said, âEither my guess is wrong, or we are facing an unprecedented powerful enemy.â
âCanât we give the southern Duke a checkup too?â I asked.
âUnfortunately, my child, I canât. A Duke has his unshakeable dignity. Weâve already checked his daughter. Itâs too outrageous to check him.â
âBut this is all to ensure their safety... âI said, unwilling to give up.
âSometimes, status and dignity are more important than safety.â My father said, âEven the Lycan King has his concerns.â
Due to what happened to the southern Duke, Iâd been depressed all morning.
The first step of my plan was blocked, making me extremely frustrated.
In the afternoon, I went to the training ground, and Aldrich was already waiting there.
âWhat happened?â He noticed that I was not in a great mood.
âItâs the southern Duke. Itâs not just Carolyn; he might also be under the witchesâ control. It was my idea to inform the southern Duke of Carolynâs strange behavior and get him to cooperate with us in examining his daughter. Unfortunately, thereâs something wrong with the southern Duke, which means that everything weâve done before had probably alerted the enemy. Iâve messed everything up.â
I curled up on the stone steps, feeling stupid.
Even the daughter of the southern Duke had fallen for it. How could the witches have released him? I should have thought of this possibility, but I didnât, so everything was ruined.
Aldrich came to my side and hugged me gently.
âNo, itâs not. Itâs just a small mistake,â he said.
âOf course, it wonât be that simple!â I was a little angry. âWhat Iâm doing is equivalent to sending a message to the witches. Once they know that weâve noticed their traces, theyâll be more vigilant, which means that everything will be more difficult from her on!â
âIs that really the case?â Aldrich was not angry at my sudden anger. Instead, he was quite tolerant. âIf everything was as bad as you said, would you still be here?â
âWhat?â I didnât understand. âBut we made an agreement...â
âNo, no, no, thatâs not what I meant. If the situation was urgent, would the Lycan King be as calm as he is now? He should have discussed countermeasures with you and her Majesty the Queen, just like when he accepted your opinion.â
âMaybe the King and the Queen are discussing a strategy.â I buried my head in my arms. âThey donât trust me anymore because I messed everything up.â
Aldrich pulled me into his arms like a baby penguin.
âI know the Lycan King. Heâs an open-minded King and a tolerant senior.â He said, âThe Lycan King wonât take his anger out on you because he took your suggestion. He wonât blame you either because the negligence of a young man is always worthy of forgiveness.â
âReally? How do you know?â
âBecause Iâve made a mistake before, but the King forgave me and taught me more ways to make up for it.â
Well, maybe my father wanted to teach me the same way he taught Aldrich, so he asked me to go to his and my motherâs place at night.
âLetâs not talk about this.â I pulled myself together. âWhereâs the gift? Iâve been looking forward to it since last nightâs dream.â
Aldrich put on an act and said, âHa! A young lady with an unpredictable mood.â
âDonât change the topic!â I reached out and tickled him. âTake it out, show it to me!â
âI surrender! I surrender!â He laughed until he was breathless and took out a long jewelry box from his pockets.
I opened it. There was a pendant inside, inlaid with black opals that were as bright as the night sky.
âWow,â I couldnât help but exclaim. âItâs so beautiful.â
Aldrich put it on for me.
âFrom the first time I saw you, I was attracted by your eyes that were as mysterious as the night,â he said.
âBack then, I thought that maybe I was a meteorite that the Moon Goddess had dropped into the human world.
âOtherwise, why would I be so eager to return to the night sky?â
