460 Lester
Selma Payneâs POV:
Lester keenly felt the change in the Evaria Familyâs attitude. Coupled with the fact that the baby was being kept a secret, he realized that if he did not leave now, he would be stuck in this huge fire pit forever.
So, he immediately forsook the dark and joined the light, using Master Kevinâs way to switch to my camp.
In fact, other than that child, I was also very interested in Lester. There was no need to doubt his professional standards. Although he was a fence-sitter, it didnât matter much. I didnât need him to enter the Council of Elders to charge through the enemy lines for me.
Tracy would come back sooner or later. The Spring Rain Pack needed an extremely capable and highly respected medical leader to develop an advantageous medical industry.
Moreover, I urgently need to expand my network in the medical field. Although my identity as a Princess could make countless medical scholars flock to me for various reasons, this couldnât guarantee my confidentiality. I needed someone I could trust to treat Aldrich. No matter the price, I was willing to pay.
Lester was very slick. He didnât mention anything about investment or research at all. He answered all my questions as if he was here to give a private medical lecture.
We chatted for a while. I was worried about my child, so I was going to take him to the ICU ward.
âYou know, Iâm different from the Evaria Family. Once youâre on my ship, you wonât have the possibility of getting off,â I said.
âI believe that the werewolf pack wonât have a stronger and steadier ship than yours. As for the Evaria Family or anyone else, perhaps I canât predict their ending, but from my observation, no matter how gorgeous the disguise is, a small boat canât ride the wind and waves in the storm.â
âNow, I have a patient that I need you to see. This is a patient who is completely confidential to the outside world. I hope you can abide by the rules of silence. No matter what you see, pretend not to see it after you leave the ward.â
Faced with my serious attitude, Lesterâs attitude changed, but he still said, âAs you wish, Your Highness.â
I looked at Master Kevin, and he nodded.
My childâs ward was far away from the heart of the palaceâs chaos. It was initially a secret garden built by a king over 200 years ago for his youngest daughter. After a hundred years of loneliness, the peaceful atmosphere was finally broken by the cold hum of medical equipment.
The doctors on duty were doing their routine checks. When they saw me, they all stood up and saluted.
I introduced Lester to them. âThis is Professor Lester, a geneticist. He might be your colleague in the future.â
Lester did not react to the word âmightâ and warmly greeted his possible âfutureâ colleagues.
I didnât see my mother. A nurse told me that she was exhausted, and after getting some medical advice, she finally agreed to go to the adjoining room to rest for a while.
I heaved a sigh of relief. My motherâs desire to protect my child had reached a level I couldnât bear to watch. If she were here, she probably wouldnât trust Lester so quickly to let him treat my child.
The moment his gaze penetrated the glass window, Lesterâs expression changed. Under my cold gaze, he smiled bitterly. âAlright, Your Highness. I swear in the goddessâs name that I will keep everything that happens in this ward a secret.â
âThe little wolf is different from ordinary children when he was born. I think itâs because of some... maternal genes. This is a secret, I canât tell you yet. In short, the wolf cub had no gender, and its physiological structure was completely different from that of an ordinary baby. I donât expect you to find a way to treat him immediately, but please give me some good news for the sake of an anxious mother.â
In the end, I heard my voice gradually become ethereal, and the wet and hot feeling filled my eyes again.
â... Iâll try my best, Your Highness.â
Lester went to make the preparations. Master Kevin was standing beside me now.
âI think the child is almost at its limit.â I heard myself say coldly. âItâs been too long. From the moment she was born, this child might have been suffering. Itâs because we, the useless adults, didnât realize it, so everything accumulated and exploded like a volcano.â
Master Kevin didnât say anything, and I didnât need anyone to agree with me.
âI donât know if I should continue... There is no other way. He is just hanging on to his life in vain. This might only make the child suffer more. But should I just give up? Shouldnât I wait for a miracle to happen? But will the outcome be better if we continue to wait?â
Silence, a suffocating silence.
With my numbness, I could sense everything in the ICU, from the instrumentâs operation and the airflow from the exhaust to the weak breathing of my child.
Master Kevin moved and seemed to hesitate, but he still said, âYour Highness, there are some things I donât know if I should say.â
âSpeak. Itâs fine.â
âThen... Donât you think the Young Princeâs current situation is somewhat familiar? Itâs as if youâve experienced it before?â
