Chapter twenty-eight | Sexy babes

I threw a questioning look his way, but he cleverly averted his eyes.

Something was wrong with him today.

Eli's hand clenched and unclenched on the steering wheel as he kept his eyes focused on the road. No matter what, he was avoiding looking at me altogether. No matter what I asked, his answers were monosyllabic.

I took out a bite from my granola bar as a wide range of what-ifs and possibilities danced through my mind.

Is he angry?

What if something happened?

Is he hiding something?

I pursed my lips, reigning my curiosity inside. Forcing Eli an answer was out of the question, so I let my concern eat me up on the inside.

With a dejected sigh, I focused my eyes on the window. My eyes observed the passing scenery mindlessly, not registering anything.

As the school gates arrived in the view, he was quick to park the car and leave me behind.

Eli was trying to dodge me, making my heart twinge painfully. I grabbed my bag and followed him with brisk steps, but my effort turned fruitless as he disappeared in the flood of students.

"Cyn!" a girly voice called from behind me. I turned and faced the familiar blonde rushing towards me.

Her light blue eyes were alight with excitement as she glanced at the cherry doors behind me.

"Hello, Sylvia," I greeted, feeling a bit surprised by her sudden interest in me.

We had talked a few times before, but we never started conversation beyond the necessary.

"Hey!" she said giddily. For a few moments an awkward silence followed her words as she bit her lips nervously.

Sylvia twisted her feet anxiously as she played with the ends of her hair. I was losing patience, a bit too annoyed to deal with a nervous junior.

"What do you want, Sylvia?"

Her bright eyes blinked, looking a bit surprised by my outburst.

"I am sorry to waste your time, Cyn... But I wanted to ask about the thing going between you and Elias. Are you guys in a relationship?" As her saccharine coated words entered my ear, rage shook my soul.

I wanted to say yes and claim him as mine but controlled the urge with the thin thread of my sanity.

Thinking rationally, I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.

"We are not in a relationship. We are just friends." I wanted my words to sound monotonous, but they came out as a hiss.

Oblivious to my tone, she squealed. She fucking squealed! Her wide blue eyes filled with happiness as the stiffness, that I didn't notice before, escaped her shoulders.

"So you wouldn't mind if I ask him out?" she confirmed as her body thrummed with excitement.

Yes, I will fucking mind!

I shook my head no, which was more like a robotic movement.

"I wouldn't mind," I replied as she jumped away from me just in time. Good for her.

The school bell rang, announcing the start of a horrid day. A loud groan of displeasure slipped past my lips as I dragged myself inside.

I quickly made my way towards the lockers as Andrea typed away on her phone. "You are late," she said but never raised her eyes from the screen.

I slammed my locker door closed and huffed as I walked towards the class. Andrea gave me a skeptical look and followed me closely through the almost empty hallways.

"What crawled up your ass and died?" she asked as she slung an arm around me. I rolled my eyes and pulled my books closer to me.

"Something has to go in there to die," I muttered.

Andrea snickered in response and lightly swayed her hips against mine.

"Sexually frustrated, Crimson?" Her amusement was infectious, making me crack a slight smile.

I shook my head and lightly elbowed her side.

"Sexual frustration doesn't exist in Cynthia Crimson's life. Her fingers enough to keep her going without a dick," I joked, trying to puff my chest out.

She stopped mid-stride and gave me a blank look. "I seriously didn't need the visual. You will turn me on, babe," she muttered, earning a loud laugh from me.

We were in laughing hysterics as tears streamed down our eyes. Acting like we were crazies, high on a drug we never took.

Our madness came to a halt when we heard a throat clear behind us. The teacher gave us a look that said scramble before I report both of you.

With our faces flushed, we walked into the class, taking the seats available. While I took a seat at the back, Andrea settled on a bench near the door. I quickly took my phone out and typed a message for her.

Cynthia: 'Sorry. You got late because of me.'

A pout emoji ended my text message. She took her phone out and read the message. Discreetly under the desk, she typed in a response.

Andrea: 'Stop talking sappy shit. We are best friends, and we are always late together!'

I bit my lip as I read her text and raised my head to meet her eyes. A sudden emotion stabbed my heart, making me smile with the sweet feeling.

With lunch here sooner than expected, I took a seat on the table, my eyes moved towards Connor and Navya with interest.

"You patched them up." My eyes moved towards Eli, who was leaning over his phone with interest.

Hearing my voice, he looked up startled. In a suspicious move, he quickly turned his phone off.

"What were you doing?" I asked, feeling curious.

Eli gave me a tight smile and shook his head. "Just texting someone."

By now, we had gained Connor's attention. He wiggled his brows in a teasing manner, giving a bright grin.

"Are you texting that sexy babe you were talking to before?" Connor joked, making my heart still for a moment.

I moved my eyes towards Eli, who was busy glaring Connor's way.

"Sexy babe? Who?" My voice was monotonous as I blinked towards him.

Eli gave me a guilty look, scratching the back of his head awkwardly.

"Nobody. Just some random girl," he replied, fidgeting on his spot.

I opened my mouth to pester him more when Navya piped in.

"She wasn't a nobody." Her brown eyes swirled with amusement. "She was a pretty little blonde and very interested in Eli. Right, Connor?"

Connor nodded in agreement, observing my expression with keen eyes.

"She was full-on flirting with him. He even gave her his number," Connor added, making my heart clench painfully.

I moved my eyes towards Eli for some confirmation.

His cheeks tainted pink as his ears turned warm shades of red.

So, it's true.

"Oh," I whispered monotonously. "I need to get something to eat."

My chair scraped against the floor as I quickly made my way to the food line.

I faintly heard Andrea call out my name, but I ignored it.

When I returned to the table, an awkward tension filled the air. Both Connor and Navya gave Elias side-way glances, as if cautious of his next move.

Elias looked up from the table and gave me a guilty smile.

"There is nothing between us," he reassured me.

"I don't care." My answer was curt as I avoided looking at him altogether.

It became silent once again. The air was tense as Andrea and Navya gave each other awkward glances. Connor avoided eyeing anyone in general, and Elias kept his gaze steady on me.

"So..." Connor trailed off. " I was thinking about our arcade day. Will you like to join us, Cynthia? You too, Andrea?"

Before anyone of us could say anything, Eli spoke up.

"I can't. Let's postpone it. I have to meet some people."

"B-but we never postponed it before. You were always there," Navya whispered, sounding flabbergasted.

Elias rolled his eyes and gave her a bland look. "I don't see the big fuss."

While his words sounded reassuring, the way Connor and Navya exchanged a look made it seem like a big thing.
