Chapter 18: The Last Stand
In the streets of us
The days following the mission felt like a blur. While their success brought some relief, the unease in D's chest never quite went away. The streets were still buzzing with the aftershock of what they'd done, and the higher-ups were sure to retaliate.
But D wasn't worried about the streets anymoreânot in the same way he had been. It wasn't the danger that gnawed at him, but the thought of losing Amir. The idea that this lifeâthis violent, chaotic life they were livingâcould take him away from Amir.
Amir had become more than just someone he shared this life with; he was someone D couldn't imagine living without. He had become the calm in the storm, the only thing D truly cared about.
It was late, but D couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned, the weight of their situation pressing on him. He needed Amir close. He always did when things were at their worst.
As if on cue, Amir entered the room, his silhouette framed by the soft light from the hallway. He hadn't asked, but he knew D well enough to understand when something was off.
"You okay?" Amir's voice was quiet, concerned.
D sat up, rubbing his face. "I can't stop thinking about everything that's about to happen. We've made it this far, but I can't shake the feeling that we're walking into something worse."
Amir walked over to the bed, sitting beside him and placing a hand on D's arm. "I get it. But you don't have to face it alone."
D looked at him, feeling the warmth of Amir's touch seep into his skin. "I know, but this is bigger than us, Amir. We're up against people who have more power than we can imagine."
"I don't care how big they are," Amir said, his voice low but steady. "We have each other. And that's all I need."
D felt the sincerity in Amir's words, and it was like a weight lifted from his chest. It wasn't just about fighting the streets anymoreâit was about the bond they shared. Amir was his strength, just as D had become his.
D turned to face Amir fully, cupping his face in his hands. "You make it hard for me to think straight," he said softly, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Amir grinned, leaning in to press a kiss to D's lips. "I'm glad I'm distracting you."
"I'm serious," D said, his voice lower now. "I don't want to lose you."
Amir's gaze softened, and he kissed D again, this time with more intensity. "You won't. I'm not going anywhere."
It wasn't a promise that was said lightly, and D could feel the weight of it in the way Amir's hands gripped him. There was no more pretendingâthis was real. They were in this together.
The kiss deepened, and for a moment, the outside world faded away. It was just the two of themâsafe, away from the violence, from the danger. It was what they both needed.

**The Confrontation**
The next day, the plan went into motion. D's crew was ready. They had everything in place, but even with everything they had worked for, the tension was thick in the air. Everyone knew this was itâthe final push.
Amir and D were together in the car, heading to the meeting point. They didn't speak much; the silence between them was comfortable but heavy with anticipation.
D's eyes flicked over to Amir as he gripped the steering wheel. His gaze lingered for just a second longer than usual, but Amir didn't seem to notice. He was focused on the road, on the mission.
But D couldn't help it. He had to make sure Amir knew just how much he meant to him, even with the stakes this high.
"Amir," D said, his voice low.
Amir turned to look at him, his brow furrowed in concern. "Yeah?"
D reached over, taking Amir's hand in his. "If something happens... I need you to know that Iâ"
Amir squeezed his hand, cutting him off. "Don't. Don't talk like that."
"I'm serious," D said, looking him in the eyes. "I can't imagine doing this without you. I won't make it out of here without you."
Amir's expression softened, his thumb brushing over D's knuckles. "We're in this together, D. I've got you. You've got me. That's all that matters."
D didn't say anything else. He just nodded, holding onto Amir's hand as they pulled up to their destination. The streets were quiet, too quiet. The calm before the storm.
They moved fast. Every step was calculated, every decision made with precision. They were about to take everything downâeverything they had worked for, everything they had fought for.
But through it all, D's eyes kept flicking back to Amir. He needed him here. More than anything, he needed Amir at his side.

**The Aftermath**
The confrontation was brutal. The final battle had everything on the line: street fights, high-stakes deals, and more enemies than D could count. But when it was overâwhen the dust finally settledâD found himself standing beside Amir, their backs to each other, victorious but exhausted.
Amir was breathing hard, his chest heaving, but when he looked at D, his expression softened.
"We did it," Amir said quietly, stepping closer to D. "We made it through."
D didn't respond right away. He was still processing everything, the blood, the violence, the chaos. But one thing was clear: they had won. And it wasn't just about the victory. It was about themâabout surviving together.
D finally turned to Amir, pulling him into a tight embrace. "Yeah. We did."
Amir rested his head on D's shoulder, their bodies pressed close. It felt surreal, like they were finally done with the violence, the fear, the running.
D pulled back just enough to look Amir in the eyes. "You're not going anywhere, right?"
Amir smiled, his eyes soft but serious. "Not unless you want me to."
D laughed quietly, shaking his head. "Good. Because I'm not letting you go."
Amir chuckled, reaching up to cup D's face. "You've got me, D. Always."
And for the first time in what felt like forever, D allowed himself to believe it. No matter what came next, they had each other. They had won the fight, but more than that, they had each other to go home to.
