Chapter 16: The Calm Before the Storm

In the streets of us

The following days after their night together were a mix of heightened tension and tender moments. D had always been used to danger, always kept a guard up, but something about Amir's presence made it easier to breathe. With Amir by his side, D felt like he could finally take the weight of the world off his shoulders, even if only for a moment.

It was early morning when D woke up to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen. Amir had always been a morning person, something D found amusing considering how often the city's late-night life kept them both awake. Still, there was something comforting about it, the soft sounds of the coffee machine bubbling away as the sunlight filtered through the curtains.

D stretched, the events of the night before still fresh in his mind, but as he turned over, he found himself smiling without even thinking. Amir was already out of bed, standing by the window, looking out over the city. His silhouette framed by the soft light was almost serene, a stark contrast to the intensity of their lives.

D padded over to him, wrapping his arms around Amir's waist from behind. Amir's body stiffened at first, then relaxed as D rested his chin on his shoulder, closing his eyes as the warmth from Amir's body seeped into him.

"Morning," Amir murmured, tilting his head slightly to meet D's lips in a soft, sleepy kiss. It wasn't rushed, just a gentle affirmation that they were there, together.

D pulled him closer, his voice a low murmur against Amir's skin. "Morning. What's going on in that head of yours?"

Amir gave a half-laugh, a small, tired smile spreading across his face. "Just thinking about how much I've gotten used to this," he said, his voice soft. "You're making it hard to focus on everything else."

D couldn't help but chuckle, a sound that felt foreign to him—light, free of the burden he usually carried. "I can't help that I'm this distracting," he teased, his fingers lightly tracing circles on Amir's stomach.

"Yeah, well, I'm not complaining." Amir's grin was playful now, and for the first time in days, they both seemed to forget about the looming threats around them, if only for a moment.

The moment was fleeting, though. D pulled back, his expression growing more serious as he looked at Amir. "We need to move fast. We can't afford to let things slip. Not now."

Amir nodded, his usual calm demeanor slipping back into place. "I know. I'm with you, D. Whatever happens, we'll handle it."

D gave him a long, meaningful look before kissing him again, this time with more urgency, as if sealing a promise between them. "Good," D whispered when they pulled apart. "We can't let anything tear us apart now."

**Later that Day**

The streets were as chaotic as ever, but the usual tension felt different today. It was clear something was brewing. D had spent the day speaking with his crew, getting intel, mapping out their next move. But every time he looked up, his gaze found Amir, who was sitting in the corner, watching him with an intensity that made D's heart race.

There were no words exchanged—just the quiet understanding between them. The world could be falling apart around them, but Amir was here, and that was enough to make D feel like maybe, just maybe, they could win this.

After hours of planning, they both found themselves in the living room of the safe house once more, the flickering of the TV as the only sound besides their breathing. D sat on the couch, and Amir, ever the affectionate one, crawled into his lap, making himself comfortable despite the heavy tension in the air.

D chuckled lightly as Amir laid his head on his shoulder, his fingers absentmindedly playing with the hem of D's shirt. Despite everything, it was moments like this—soft, simple, and real—that kept D grounded.

"You always so clingy?" D asked, his voice teasing but gentle, his fingers running through Amir's hair.

"Only with you," Amir responded, his voice muffled against D's chest. "You've got me wrapped around your finger, D. And I don't mind one bit."

D's heart did a strange flip at the words, but he said nothing, content to let the moment linger. He hadn't realized how much he needed this, how much he needed *Amir*. Their relationship, though born from the chaos of their lives, had evolved into something more meaningful. Something that made every risk, every danger, feel worth it.

Suddenly, D's phone buzzed on the table. He tensed, his eyes flicking over to it, but Amir was already there, picking it up before D could even reach for it.

"It's the crew," Amir said, looking at the screen with a serious expression.

D nodded, reluctantly pushing himself off the couch and standing to take the call. The soft pressure of Amir's fingers on his arm made him pause, though, and he turned back to look at him.

"Be careful," Amir said quietly, his eyes full of concern. "I'm not letting you go alone."

D gave him a small, reassuring smile, but the weight of the moment wasn't lost on either of them. Amir's words felt like a promise, one that made D feel like he had someone worth fighting for. "I'll be careful. Stay close."

Amir nodded, getting to his feet and walking with D toward the door, ready to face whatever came next, side by side. Their connection, their bond, was stronger than ever, and D felt invincible with Amir at his side.

**That Night**

The mission was dangerous. The tension was thick as D and Amir, along with the crew, prepared to take on their rivals. There was no turning back now.

As the night wore on, D found himself glancing at Amir, his heart skipping a beat every time their eyes met. It wasn't just the mission he was focused on anymore. It was Amir—his constant, his rock.

The night ended without incident, but the danger still loomed over them. As they returned to the safe house, the weight of the world settled back into D's shoulders, but the warmth of Amir's hand in his made him feel like he could carry it. They didn't need to say anything. They had each other, and that was enough.

Amir pulled D into a hug as they stood in the doorway, their bodies pressed together. "We made it through tonight," Amir whispered, his lips brushing against D's ear.

D closed his eyes, holding him tight. "We will make it through everything, Amir. Together."
