Chapter 12: New Beginnings
In the streets of us
The morning after everything felt like a dream. The quiet hum of the city outside the safe house filtered through the walls, but inside, everything was still. D lay in bed, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The night before had changed everything. It wasn't just the mission anymore. It wasn't just about surviving. It was about Amir. About the undeniable connection that had been building between them, the spark that had finally ignited.
He could still feel the warmth of Amir's touch, the softness of his lips against his, and the way Amir had held him close, as if he were the one thing in this dangerous world worth protecting. D had never let anyone get that close to him, but AmirâAmir was different. There was a trust between them, an unspoken understanding that made everything else seem secondary.
D turned over, his body moving instinctively to where Amir had slept the night before. The space beside him was empty, but the warmth of the bed lingered, a reminder that Amir hadn't left.
A soft knock on the door broke the silence, and D's heart skipped a beat. He knew who it was before the voice even spoke.
"You awake?" Amir's voice was low, a hint of that same warmth D had come to crave in the tone.
"Yeah," D replied, his voice hoarse as he pushed himself up into a sitting position. "Come in."
The door creaked open, and Amir stepped inside, his presence immediately filling the room. D's eyes couldn't help but follow him as he moved, the way the light caught in his hair, the faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air. It felt natural, easy, to have Amir here. More natural than anything D had experienced in a long time.
Amir smiled, but there was something different about it today. There was no teasing, no distance. It was a real smile, a soft one that spoke volumes.
"You good?" Amir asked, his gaze soft as he looked at D. "After last night... I wasn't sure if you'd want to talk."
D let out a breath, his eyes meeting Amir's. "I do. I've been thinking about it all night."
Amir walked over to the bed, sitting down beside D. His proximity made D's heart race in ways he hadn't expected. He was used to keeping a distance, used to hiding his emotions. But with Amir, that distance didn't feel right anymore.
"I'm not good at this," D admitted, his voice quieter than usual. "I don't... I don't let people in. But with you, it's different. I can't keep pretending it's not."
Amir's gaze softened, and he reached out, his hand brushing against D's. "You don't have to pretend with me, D. Not anymore. You don't have to carry everything on your own. Not when I'm right here."
The words hit D like a wave, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he could breathe. The weight he had carried alone for so long, the constant pressure of leadership, of being the one everyone relied onâit all seemed to lighten when Amir was around.
"I don't want to mess this up," D murmured, his hand moving to rest on Amir's. "I've never been in a relationship like this. I don't know what I'm doing."
Amir chuckled softly, the sound a mix of affection and amusement. "You don't have to know everything. I don't have it all figured out either. We'll figure it out together."
D turned his hand to intertwine his fingers with Amir's, the connection feeling like the first step toward something real. Something that, for once, felt right.
"Yeah," D said, his voice steady. "Together."

**Later that Day:**
The day passed in a blur of quiet moments. D and Amir spent it mostly in the safe house, the others laying low and trying to regroup after the chaos of the previous days. But D couldn't focus on anything other than Amir. They spoke in hushed tones, sharing small details about their livesâthings D hadn't shared with anyone in a long time, things he didn't even realize he needed to say.
They were careful, hesitant, but the attraction was undeniable. Every touch lingered longer than it needed to. Every glance was filled with unspoken words.
When the evening came, they found themselves alone on the rooftop, looking out at the city sprawled below. The wind whipped through the air, but it didn't matter. All that mattered was that they were together, standing side by side, silently enjoying each other's presence.
Amir leaned against the railing, his back to D, and D couldn't help but watch him. There was something magnetic about Amirâsomething that made it impossible for D to look away.
"Amir," D's voice was low, almost tentative. "What does this mean for us?"
Amir turned to face him, his expression serious, but his eyes were soft. "It means we're starting something new. It means we take this one step at a time, but we do it together. No matter what happens, we face it together."
D stepped closer, closing the distance between them until they were inches apart. His heart pounded in his chest, and for the first time, he didn't feel the need to hold back. He reached out, his hand cupping Amir's jaw gently, and pulled him closer.
"I want this," D whispered, his voice full of conviction. "I want you."
Amir's breath caught, and for a moment, they just stood there, the world around them fading away. Then Amir's lips were on his, soft and hesitant at first, as if they were both testing the waters. But soon, the kiss deepened, their bodies pressing closer, as if they couldn't get close enough. D's hands tangled in Amir's hair, pulling him closer, needing to feel more.
When they finally pulled apart, their breaths were ragged, their faces flushed.
"I don't know what happens next," Amir said, his voice hoarse with emotion. "But I know I want to be with you, D. Whatever it takes."
D smiled, his heart full for the first time in ages. "We'll figure it out, Amir.
