Pucking Around: Chapter 97
Pucking Around: A Why Choose Hockey Romance (Jacksonville Rays Book 1)
âIs someone gonna tell me what the hell is going on here?â
Coach Johnson stands in the middle of the locker room, hands on his hips. Heâs a big man, with broad shoulders and a barrel chest. Next to him stands Assistant Coach Andrews. Near the door, Vicki and Poppy huddle together, looking extremely confused.
The only other two people in the room are Jake and Calebâ¦and theyâre holding hands. My eyes go wide, shocked by their brazen public display of affection. Caleb doesnât even like holding my hand in the privacy of the living room. What the hell did I miss tonight?
Ilmari and I join Jake and Caleb in the middle of the room.
âDid you get it?â Jake says, a wide smile on his face.
Ilmari nods.
âOh, fuck yes!â He drops Calebâs hand and holds his up, waiting for Ilmari to give him a high-five.
With a sigh, Ilmari does.
âCongrats, man,â Caleb adds.
âWe are so fucking celebrating tonight. Cedar plank salmon fillets and steamed broccoli for everyone,â Jake teases. âWeâll pop the cork on some aged cucumber water.â
I try to hide my smile.
âWhat the hell is he talking about?â Coach Johnson says at Ilmari, while behind him, Andrews says, âOh shit,â eyes wide.
âIâm going to the Olympics,â Ilmari announces to the room. âStarting goalie for the Finnish National Team.â
Behind us, Vicki and Poppy squeal with excitement, calling out their congratulations. Andrews steps forward to shake Ilmariâs hand. âAmazing,â he says. âSo well deserved.â
âOh my goodness,â says Poppy. âWeâll have to get started on the press releases pronto. And weâll do a photo shoot, interviewsââ
âWait just a goddamn minute,â Coach Johnson says, holding up a hand. âMars, weâre happy for you. But that isnât the reason Iâm delayed getting home to my wife and kids tonight. Now, weâre gonna get to the bottom of this right now. Iâve got Andrews here, the PR rep, Vicki from the team managerâs office. Weâre all standing here looking at the four of you. What the hell is going on?â He glances between us, his gaze landing on me. âPrice? Wanna enlighten us?â
I glance at Jake and Caleb, unsure of what to say. âIâ¦â
âOkay, how about I start?â says Coach. âJust before you came in here, Compton was in the middle of telling us that heâs in a romantic relationship with our equipment manager.â
Ilmari and I both glance sharply over at the guys. This was never part of the discussion. We only ever discussed them coming out as all dating me. I definitely missed something big when I went to go take care of Novy.
âIs it true?â I say, tears in my eyes as I glance between them.
âYeah, Seattle,â Jake replies with a smile, nudging Caleb with his shoulder. âThe asshole finally wore me down.â
I bit my lip to keep from smiling as Caleb curses under his breath. âCan you try not to make a joke of everything?â he mutters. âThis is serious.â
âThank you, Sanford,â Coach replies. âThis is serious. Compton are you telling us you want to come out? Is this a gay pride thing?â
âI meanâ¦no one is really gonna be all that surprised, sir. Caleb and I already live together. The rumors have circled us since college. Weâre justâ¦not denying them anymore,â Jake says with a shrug.
Coach turns to the ladies by the door. âWhat are the rules here, Vicki?â
Vicki glances between us. âSo long as they declare the relationship with HR, and they go through the proper briefings, technically speaking thereâs no issue.â
âAnd the PR angle?â Coach adds at Poppy.
âOh, goodness,â she says, flipping her sleek blonde ponytail off her shoulder. âWell, coming out is still a pretty significant thing in the sports world. Itâll cause quite a splashâ¦if thatâs what you want,â she adds, looking at Jake. âAre you wanting to come out to just the team and ask for a gag order on press? Because thereâs only so much we can doâ¦â
âNo, itâs fine,â Jake says. âI want this to be public. I want everyone to know Iâm with Caleb.â
âI sure hope you know what youâre doing wanting to go public with this,â Coach warns.
âIâm confused though, honey,â says Vicki. She points between Jake and I, her dark eyes narrowed. âAre you not together anymore?â
âWe are,â I say.
Poppyâs eyes go wide, her mouth open as she glances between us. âWhatâI donâtââ
âOh, hell,â Coach mutters. âIs this a love triangle thing?â
âItâs more like a pyramid,â Jake replies.
âExplain yourselves,â says Vicki, arms crossed.
âWeâre together,â I say, glancing at the guys. âThe four of us. Well, Jake and Caleb and I are together,â I clarify. âAnd Ilmari and Iâ¦but heâs not with them.â
They all stare at us with confused looks on their faces.
âIâm too old for this,â Coach says at last, shaking his head.
âYouâreâis it like a swingers thing?â says Andrews, clearly trying to be hip enough to understand.
âNo, itâs polyamory,â replies Poppy with an excited grin. âYouâre polyamorous. Right, Rachel?â
I nod. âBut I swear to you, I neverâwe never planned on this. It just kind of happened,â I admit. âI met Jake first, before I ever joined the Rays. We met in Seattle during the off season. And when I got here, we started things back up again. Through him, I met Caleb. And Ilmari found his way to us,â I add with a smile, squeezing his hand. âWe all live together. Weâre together, sir. Weâre a family. And weâd like to go public. But itâs complicated because of my family and my history. And the guys have their NHL careers to think about,â I add, glancing from Ilmari to Jake.
âWe never meant to hide anything, sir,â Jake adds. âWeâve just been cautious as we considered how best to do this. Mars and I donât want to hurt the team or bring anyone bad press. But we canât live a lie either. Itâll just get worse if we do. We donât want the guys chirping at us or feeling like we have secrets in the locker room.â
âAnd the guys are ready to know,â Caleb adds. âNovy and Morrow came to me last week saying the team will support us. The press outside the Rays will eat it up because of Rachel and her family, but inside our team, the guys seem cool. They just donât want secrets.â
âWhat is all this about your family, Price?â Coach says, his sharp eyes glaring at me.
âI ummâ¦my dadââ
âHer dad is world famous rock star Hal Price!â Poppy squeals. âYou know, front man for The Ferrymen?â
âChrist, why do I keep forgetting that?â Coach mutters, rubbing his face with a tired hand.
âYouâre saying the guys know youâre in a four-way sharing relationship with the team doctor and theyâre cool with it?â says Andrews, one brow raised.
âWell, they donât know all the details,â Caleb admits. âBut they know pieces. Like, Jerry caught Jake and I tonight.â
âAnd Avery just caught Mars and me,â I add.
âAnd the guys have been guessing Iâm with Rach for months,â says Jake. âWe had the form signed and everything. We were just keeping it quiet.â
âDamn,â Coach huffs. âRight, well hereâs order number one: stop fucking around in the goddamn barn. I should fire you all for that alone. There will be no funny business on the job. You understand me, Compton?â he says, pointing a finger in his face. âI get even a whiff of you making eyes at Sanford at work, Iâll send you both packing. Same goes for you, Kinnunen. We keep that shit at home.â
âYes, sir,â Jake mutters. Caleb echoes him.
Coach sighs, glancing at me. âThereâs a bigger issue here, Price.â
I go still, holding his gaze. âSir?â
âBased on what Iâve heard, it sounds like youâve been engaged in a romantic relationship withânot oneâbut two of my players this season.â
I nod again. âYes, sir.â
He sighs. âWell, Vicki, correct me if Iâm wrong, but she only had clearance from HR with Compton, correct?â
âThatâs correct, sir,â Vicki replies.
âNo,â Ilmari mutters next to me.
âDonât,â I whisper, squeezing his hand.
âSo, youâve been romantically involved with Kinnunen, and youâve been his primary care provider, yes? Youâve been actively treating him for a groin pull?â Coach asks.
I let out a breath as I nod. âYes, sir.â
He sighs again, shaking his head. âSo, you see our problem. Right, Doctor Price?â
âYes, sir,â I say again, not daring to let tears sting my eyes.
âRakas, donât,â Ilmari growls, lowering his face towards me.
âIâm not going to lie, Ilmari,â I reply, trying to keep my voice calm. âWe knew what we were doing. I knew. Jake and Caleb pressed me on it, but I ignored them because I wanted to make sure you got the level of care you deservedââ
âThis is all Averyâs fault,â Ilmari snaps, turning his gaze back to the coaches.
âAvery? What did he do?â asks Andrews.
âHeâs the fucking worst,â Jake mutters. âExcuse my language, sir,â he adds at Coach.
âThe guys all hate him,â Caleb adds. âSome of them wonât even work with him anymore. They all prefer Rachel. Which just pisses him off even more. Heâs always riding Rachelâs case and making life harder for her at practice and games.â
Andrews looks to me. âIs this true, Price?â
âIf the guys have a problem with Doctor Avery, they havenât mentioned it to me,â I admit. âBut I do treat several of them in the capacity of a PT. Langley and Sully, J-Lo, Karlssonâ¦Kinnunenââ
Ilmari steps forward. âThe only reason I even approached Doctor Price is because I didnât trust Avery. I went to him twice in the off season to discuss my pain and twice he shut me down. He told me I needed a better stretching routine. And then he said I was too old. His official recommendation was that I retire.â
I gasp, turning to face him. âHe did not say that.â
âHe did,â Ilmari mutters. âWhy do you think I was so reluctant to have you help me?â He turns back to the coaches. âShe helped me when I felt abandoned by the medical staff here. She used her own resources to get me up to Cincinnati for treatment when I refused to go through Avery. Doctor Price has never once done anything to jeopardize my health or my safety. And if you fire herââ
âStop right there, Kinnunen,â Coach barks. âYou may be a fantastic player, but you are not in charge here. The fact remains that she knowingly broke the rules, and you helped her do it. She knew what she was doing was unethicalââ
âIs it unethical to provide the level of care a player deserves?â Jake counters. âJust because this team employs subpar medical professionals, doesnât mean we should suffer for it. Mars was right to get treatment from herââ
âIâm not contesting that fact,â Coach shouts over him. âBut Doctor Price still engaged in a sexual relationship with her patient! It sounds like sheâs been doing everything in the shadows since she got here. How are we to know what she did and didnât do with Kinnunen? Where are the records of this Cincinnati trip? Why wasnât I informed that my star goalie left the state for clandestine medical procedures?â
He turns his stormy gaze on me. âI donât begrudge you your servantâs heart, Doctor Price. I even thank you for the care youâve so clearly shown my players. But youâve got a lot to learn about working as part of a team. Secrets and lies and operating on your own without any oversight is not the kind of teamwork I expect. Itâs not conduct I can condone either,â he says, a note of finality in his voice.
âWhat are you saying?â says Jake, one arm looping protectively around my waist.
âIâm saying this is out of my hands,â Coach admits. âI may be the Head Coach, but Iâm not the ultimate shot-caller here. My personal recommendation is that Doctor Price be fired, effectively immediatelyââ
âCoach, no!â Jake cries.
âOh my goodness,â Poppy gasps, tears in her eyes.
âThis is wrong,â says Ilmari.
âSo fucking wrong,â Caleb echoes.
âAs I said,â Coach calls over them, âitâs not my decision. This has to go up to the General Manager. With all these accusations about Averyâto say absolutely nothing about the ratâs nest that is your complicated romantic lives. Then thereâs Compton and his coming out, Kinnunen and his Olympic announcementâI mean, what the hell are you thinking?â he barks, eyes on Ilmari. âTheyâre gonna pull your offer, son.â
âThey wonât,â he replies.
âThey wonât?â Coach echoes, his tone incredulous. âHow the hell can youââ
âBecause I already told them everything,â he explains.
âIlmari,â I murmur, tears now burning my eyes.
âI told them to be prepared that the news of my relationship with Doctor Price would make the American press,â he goes on. âLuckily, Finns are more amenable to the idea that people can dare to have personal lives. And it is no scandal to be a man in love with a smart, talented woman. It is no scandal for that man to cohabitate with two men he sees as closer than friends. They are family to me. Finns who know my history will be happy that I have a family to call my own. My agent is already working on the press releases. I have the full support of the FIHA.â
âKulta,â I whisper, taking his hand. Relief floods me, mingling with my shame and embarrassment. Iâve made such a mess of everything. To still have his support means the world to me.
âRight,â Coach says on a tired sigh. âI canât possibly make this decision. Not without input from the GM. What I can do is say that, effectively immediately, Doctor Price is suspendedââ
âNo,â Jake barks.
âShut up,â Caleb says, grabbing his arm. âSuspended isnât fired. Itâs a fucking win.â
Jake grumbles, shaking his head. Next to me, Ilmari is silent as the grave. Jake and Ilmari inch closer to my left and right, buttressing me.
Coach holds my gaze. âYouâre suspended until further notice, Doctor Price. Give us time to unravel this mess, and weâll decide what to do with your fellowship. But I have to warn you,â he adds. âIt doesnât look promising.â
âYes, sir,â I murmur. âI understand.â
He sighs again. âFine. I canât deal with any more of this tonight. All of you go home. And Compton, Kinnunen, you let this affect your play or your attitudes out on that ice, and Iâll suspend you too. Understood?â
âYes, sir,â Jake grits out.
I squeeze Ilmariâs hand, and he mutters out a, âYes.â
âGood. Now, everyone get out of here. Weâre back at it bright and early. Wellâ¦except for you, Price,â he adds at me. âWhile the suspension is in place, youâll need to hand over your ID and keycards. Youâre banned from access to the team until further notice.â
I give him a stiff nod. âYes, sir.â
Operating on autopilot, I sling my backpack around to my front and open the smallest pocket. With shaking hands, I pull out my lanyard that contains my Rays ID and door access keys. Stepping forward, I hand the entire lanyard over to Vicki.
She accepts it wordlessly, tears brimming in her eyes.
Not waiting to see if the guys follow me, I walk right out the door of the locker room and donât look back.
