Chapter 81
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
#Chapter 81 â Eric Meddles 3rd Person âWe need to find ev-dence to help mommy.â Riley mused, looking around at her brothers and sister. Though the pups had been distracted by the news that Jane was planning on taking them back to the Dark Moon pack, as well as devastated by their failure to change her mind, her arrest had certainly reminded them of how dire her situation truly was.
âMaybe if sheâs safe, she wonât be so âfraid to stay here.â Parker added, sensing the direction of his sisterâs thoughts.
âXactly.â Riley agreed, âI donâ think she was telling the truth when she said weâre going just because her bizness is there. I think sheâs scared.â
âThat pâlice man was really mean.â Paisley added with a little shiver, âhe scared me too.â
âYour Mommy isnât afraid of the police.â Ericâs deep voice sounded behind them, and all three kids turned around to look at him.
He was babysitting again. Jane and Ethan hadnât felt comfortable sending them to pre-
school with all the press lurking around every corner, so Eric offered to watch them while they were both at work. 1 âWhat dâyou mean?â Ryder questioned, sure his uncle was wrong. Jane had definitely seemed frightened by the investigator who accused her of murdering Petra, theyâd even heard her telling Ethan she might go to jail.
âSheâs not afraid of the police.â Eric repeated. âSheâs afraid of your Daddy.â 1 âNo sheâs not!â Paisley promptly objected.
âShe is.â Eric stated firmly. âThatâs why she left him in the first place, and why sheâs so determined to leave again.â
âWe donât bâlieve you.â Riley replied with a stubborn glare.
âWell you should, because your Daddy is a monster.â Eric insisted. He knew Jane wouldnât approve of him telling them this, but he believed every word he was saying with deep conviction, and he truly believed the pups should know Ethan wasnât worthy of their admiration. After all, if Ethan was willing to enslave his own mate, why not his pups? They needed to be protected from him, and if his words helped convince them to come back to the Dark Moon pack without complaint? Well, that would just be icing on the cake.
âNo he isnât!â Paisley cried in protest.
Youâre a liar!â
âC âYou wanna bet?â Eric asked, arching one dark brow. âWhen they were married, he betrayed your Mommy with Eve. Do you know what an affair is? What it means to cheat?â
âLike in a game or on a test?â Parker inquired curiously.
âNo honey, not exactly.â Eric corrected gently. âWhen two people are married, they promise theyâll onlyâ¦â
He paused to search for a toddler-appropriate term, âkiss each other for the rest of their lives. But Cheating is if one of them breaks that promise and kisses someone else, and an affair is when they keep kissing that other person for a long time.â
âAnd Daddy did that with Eve?â Ryder questioned, wrinkling his nose in distaste.
âHe did.â Eric confirmed, âBoth when they were married and since she came back too.â
âIâve never seen Daddy kiss Eve.â Paisley frowned, narrowing her eyes at the man her siblings seemed to trust so much.
âWell he has.â Eric told her curtly, âBecause they made a baby together.â
The pups exchanged confused glances,â
Howâd they do that?â Parker asked, the concept of baby-making still very much a mystery to he and his siblings.â 2 âWellâ¦â Eric grappled for a response, realizing too late the error of revealing this particular piece of information. âThatâs a question for your Mommy and Daddy, but the fact is itâs proof of his betrayal.â
âBut why would that make Mommy scared of him?â Riley wondered aloud, not sure if she believed Eric, but wanting to understand his accusations.
âBecause thatâs only half the story.â Eric revealed, pleased to be holding each of the pupâs rapt attention. âBack when they were married, Eve framed your Mommy for a crime, just like sheâs trying to do now â and your Daddy believed Eve. He took her side.â
âWhy would he do that?â Ryder objected, â Eveâs evil.â
âBecause she was very convincing.â Eric informed them. âAnd sometimes when grown ups are⦠kissing each other, they canât see people for who they really are.â
âSo what happened?â Ryder pressed.
âYeah, what did he do?â Riley added.
âHe locked your mommy up in his rooms. and never let her leave.â Eric announced, adopting the tone one might to tell a scary story over a campfire.
âLike a time out?â Parker suggested.
âLike a time out that never ends.â Eric corrected. âHe made her his prisoner. He didnât let her go anywhere or do anything.
He stole her freedom even though she didnât do anything wrong.â
âI donâ believe you.â Paisley repeated, Daddy would never do that.â
(
âWhat has your Daddy told you about their marriage?â Eric asked, âDid he ever tell you why they split up?â
âHe said he made a mistake.â Paisley murmured, not really wanting to admit this to Eric. âA mistake that hurt Mommy and made her leave.â
âWell this was his mistake.â Eric declared triumphantly. âAsk him yourself â ask your Mommy. He made her his slave. Thatâs why she ran away, and why she hid you all from him.â He added, nodding to Riley, Parker and Ryder. âNow sheâs afraid heâll do it again.â
âBut Daddy loves Mommy.â Riley proclaimed, crossing her arms over her chest.
âHe wants her â thatâs not the same thing as love.â Eric explained, âAnd the question you should be asking is whether your Mommy loves him. Think about it â she was already afraid before Eve framed her. Sheâs been afraid ever since she ran into your Daddy again.â
The pups looked at one another with identical frowns. Now that they thought about it, Jane had been behaving oddly ever since Ethan turned up. She knocked him out when he kissed her in the hallway, then ran away crying. She was always arguing with him and calling herself other names, pretending to be someone else. Sheâd even told Paisley she was hiding from him.
Was it possible Eric was telling the truth? Had they been so distracted by everything going on with Eve, Paisley and Petra, that theyâd missed the signs. The more they thought about it, the more Ericâs words made sense. The wolf in question was watching them closely, reading their tense expressions and sensing their gradual acceptance. Deciding to hammer one final nail into the coffin, he continued, âThe last time I shared something with you and you accused me of lying, you went to your Mommy and Daddy and they told you I was right.â He reminded them. âItâs the same this time. Iâm telling the truth.â
Paisley was still stubbornly shaking her head. âYouâre jealous of Daddy, you want us to think heâs bad so weâll go home with Mommy.â
âI wonât pretend I like your Daddy â because I donât.â Eric admitted. âBut the reasons I donât like him are precisely because of the things Iâm telling you now. I care about your Mommy, I want only the best for her, and knowing how badly your Daddy hurt her is more than enough reason for me to dislike him.â
Paisley sort of deflated, looking to her siblings for help, âyou donât believe him, do you?â She asked them anxiously.
Riley, Ryder and Parker stared back at their newfound sister with wide eyes. They loved Paisley and they didnât want to believe such terrible things of their father, but they couldnât deny Ericâs story fit. âPaisley, you werenâ there in da beginning.â Riley uttered softly, âMommyâs been upset ever since she saw Daddy at the restraunt.â
âSheâs more scared now,â Parker concurred, âbut she was âlready scared before Eve.â
With a sinking heart Paisley realized that her siblings werenât going to take her side this time. It hurt worse than she expected. Sheâd always dreamed of having brothers and sisters, imagining that they would form their own little pack, always there to help and support each other. However now it simply felt like three against one. Her young mind assumed siblings meant never being alone again, but she couldnât remember I time when she felt more alone than in this moment.
âBut you donâ know Daddy like I do.â Paisley argued pitifully, making one last attempt to convince them. âHeâs the nicest man in the world.â
âIâm sorry, Paisley.â Riley professed, âWe donâ wanna bâlieve it, but we hafta ask. If Daddy says it isnât true, we wonât argue.â
âWe owe Mommy that much.â Ryder added. âBut weâll understand if you canât agree.â
âWell I donât agree!â Paisley burst out, stomping her little foot. âWhy did you even come here if you didnâ
want to be with Daddy!?â
âWe did.â Parker insisted, âWe do⦠we just need to know the truth.â
âFine.â Paisley pouted, âHave it your way, but donât come crying to me when youâre wrong.â The distraught pup stormed off to her bedroom, not wanting to look at Eric or the other pups for a moment longer. Still, deep down in the back of her mind, her worst fear was growing bigger and bigger: what if they werenât wrong? What if they were right? What if Daddy was as bad as Eric said?
She prayed he wasnât or sheâd never be able to look at him the same again.
