Chapter 23
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
Chapter 23 Ethan Wakes Up Ryder and Parker had always been talented eaves droppers.
From before they could remember, grown ups always seemed to be having secret conversations behind closed doors. They never thought they were speaking loudly enough to be over heard â that or they thought the pups could not understand.
But they did hear.
And they did understand.
Now, it wasnât all grown ups. Their mommy certainly knew better, but Auntie Linda did not. Ryder and Parker listened as the doctor checked over their Daddy, using strange words they did not recognize like concussion and contusion, then saying things that were very clear indeed. Such as, âhe mustnât be movedâ and âHeâll need to stay here on bed rest.â
âBut his daughter is to have surgery tomorrow.â Linda object âIt will have to be postponed.â The doctor assessed simply. âIâ m afraid the Alpha wonât be back on his feet for a few days.â
âYes, Doctor.â Linda agreed grimly.
The boys were both excited and concerned. The idea of final ly getting to meet their Daddy was unbelievable enough, but this was even better. They might actually get to spend time with him â live with him. Still, it also meant their newfound sister would have to stay in the hospital even longer, and now sheâd be more vul nerable to that terrible lady who tried to poison her than ever.
They had to do something.
The next morning at breakfast they asked their Mommy if they could come with her to pick up Riley and luckily she agreed.
Two hours later the boys stood in a dimly lit hospital room, watching their sisters meet for the first time.
âRiley this is Paisley, Paisley this is Riley.â Parker introduced them.
2004 âSee, I always knew I should have a twin!â Riley exclaimed to her brothers.
âWeâre all twins,â Ryder corrected her.
âYou know what I mean!â Riley exclaims.
âYou two can switch places without anyone noticing.â Paisley elaborates, reading her sisterâs mind. âNow Riley and I can do the same!â She frowns, âOf course it would be easier if we were all tâ
gether.â
âListen, we already have a plan to get Mommy and Daddy back together.â Ryder shares excitedly. âBut firt you have to get through surgry.â
âThat means staying away from that âmean lady.â Ryder ad vises. âShe was trying to poison you.â
Both boys speak in unison then, âWe know it!â
Paisley scrunches up her face, âEve has always been a witch. And if you want Mommy and Daddy to get back tâgether, weâll have to seal with her first- sheâs wanted to marry him for ages.â
Riley, Parker and Ryder were only too pleased to hear their new sister supporting their plans, âHow dâwe get rid of her?â Riley questions.
âWell,â Paisley muses out loud, âshe hates kids. She hates getting dirty and poor people⦠I think if weâre just loud and messy and all over herâ¦â
âSheâ || get really mad.â Ryder surmises, finishing her thought.â
âExactly.â Paisley agrees, âand we just have to be sure Dad dy is there when she does.â
âBut how can we make sure weâll all be together again?â Parker asks, âMommy clearly doesnâ wanna be around Daddy.â
âIf you can handle Mommy,â Paisley suggests. âI can handle Daddy.â
âWe can do this.â Riley agrees. âWe just have to work togeth 1. Deal?â
All four pups glance at one another before nodding in agree ment. âDeal.â
Jane âYou canât hide forever, Janey.â Linda informs me matter-of factly, her voice sounding distant over the phone.
âNot forever.â | agree, speaking quietly into the receiver and hoping the pups are too distracted to pay attention. âjust until heâs gone.â
âYeah, well the doctor said he could be asleep a couple of days â itâs really hard to tell with head injuries.â My friend reminds me. Itâs been less than twelve hours since the incident â as Iâm now calling it â and Iâve done my best to keep myself and the pups out of the house. Even now, after picking up Riley from the hospital, Iâve taken the kids to get ice cream rather than returning home. Iâm currently contemplating staying at a hotel tonight, but when I told Linda she insisted I was being silly.
âOr he could wake up before this afternoon.â | argue, âBy the time weâre done running errands he could be gone.â
âI donât think thatâs likely.â Linda drawls, âthat was one heavy vase, girl.â
âYes, and he has one very thick skull.â | counter, ignoring the guilt bubbling up inside me for knocking Ethan out so ruthlessly. Itâs a blessing he was so drunk. Iâm sure he remembers nothing of the incident, and even if he does heâs much too proud to admit a tiny she-wolf got the better of him. It will be much easier to sim ply agree that he fell and hit his head.
âMommy, can we go home now?â Riley asks, tugging on my skirt. The poor little thing must be so tired, and I know she hated spending so many nights in the hospital away from me and the boys.
âHold on one sec, Linda.â I murmur, lowering my cell to ad dress my daughter. âActually, I think Auntie Linda could use a break from having house guests. How would you all feel about staying in a hotel tonight?â Itâs true that Linda could probably use a break. Iâve arranged a rental apartment for the remainder of our stay here, but it wonât be ready for another few days. âWe can go 42 14 to the fancy one by the mall, with the swimming pool and the ar cade? You love it there.â
To my shock, all three pups exchange glances before turning back to me with deep frowns. âNo!â They exclaim in unison.
Linda snorts in my ear, and I resist the urge to growl at her. âYou donât want to go have a mini vacation?â
| ask my children, surprised they would turn down the temptation.
âWe wanna go back to Auntie Lindaâs.â Parker insists.
âWe like it there.â Ryder adds.
âSides Mommy, Iâm too tired to play.â Riley contributes with a pout.
Groaning internally, I cave.
âAlright,â I sigh in resignation, shifting my cell back into posi tion. âLinda, weâre coming home.â
Ethan Itâs dark when I wake, and I donât recognize my surroundings. Iâm in a small bedroom with drawn curtains, in a house that smells strange yet familiar. I rack my memory for details, but the last thing I remember is being at the bar after receiving the unfor tunate DNA results. Getting slowly to my feet, I rub my eyes, and a few fuzzy images flash through my consciousness.
Jane. Or is it, Elise?
Suddenly I know why the house smells familiar. Lindaâs scent is strongest, but Elise Carringtonâs perfume and Janeâs sunshine are blended around the edges. I must be in Lindaâs house. I do smell pups as well, but their scents are weaker like⦠Goddess what do I even call this woman? Iâm so confused about Elise and Jane that I feel absolutely beside myself â and that isnât a sensa tion Iâm used to at all.
One thing is clear though, at some point last night I must have sought out the she-wolf responsible for my mixed-up emo tions, and when I got here⦠The same images burst into my mind, of the beautiful blonde wrapped up in my arms, our mouths locked together in a passionate kiss. But what happened then? |
canât think straight, and it doesnât help that my head is throbbing with pain.
Raising my hand to the back of my head, I find a huge knot that stings like the devil when I press my fingers to it. The sound of shattering pottery sounds in my ear, and I vaguely remember a vase in Eliseâs hand. My wolf growls as understanding sinks in. Whether she is my Jane or not, Elise Carrington is in big trouble.
Sheâs in the kitchen when l emerge, the rest of the house quiet as a mouse. A glance at the clock on the mantel tells me itâs past 11PM, which probably means everyone else is in bed. Per fect.
âHello Ms. Carrington.â | state gruffly, taking immense plea sure when she leaps into the air in surprise.
âAlpha.â She gasps in shock, pressing her hand to her heart, âYou startled me.â
âI can see that.â I proclaim, prowling forward.
Her eyes warily follow my movement, âHow are you feeling?â
âConfused.â I admit, rubbing my jaw in thought, âYou see, the last thing I remember was a few hours ago. I was at the bar, but now Iâve woken up here.â
âIt wasnât a few hours ago.â She corrects, her little pink tongue darting out to lick her lips and completely distracting me. âIt was last night, you fell and hit your head.â
âI fell?â I repeat, feigning ignorance. The lie gave me the per fect excuse to zone in on my target, so it takes me a moment to process her first words. âWait a minute â last night?â | glance at the clock again.
âPaisley!â
âDonât worry,â Elise interrupts my panic, âHer surgery was postponed, until you could be there with her.â
Relief courses through me, âThank you. I would never have forgiven myself if she had to go through it alone.â
âShe wouldnât have.â Elise answers quickly, clearly not think ing it through first. My head jerks up at the protective note in her voice, and realizing what she said, the blonde improvises, âsome one would have been there for her, I mean. Your mother, or Eve.â
I fight the urge to snort, I can just imagine the kind of care Eve would provide my daughter. Childcare is not exactly her strength. Still, Eliseâs slip up makes me wonder. Why was her re sponse about my pup so defensive?
Just then the little girl I met in the restaurant comes into the kitchen, rubbing her eyes and wearing the same expression Paisley does when sheâs not truly awake. âMommy, I canât sleep.â
I return my gaze to Elise, a sense of triumph building in my chest. Mommy. Just as I thought. Clearly these arenât Lindaâs pups after all.
