Chapter 199
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
Ethan âEthan, if youâre going to do a bunch of grand gestures for Jane and make us take credit for them, you could at least warn us!â Linda scolds over the phone. âI mean the photo album was one thing, but now youâve really taken it too far.
Honestly, her mortgage?â
âI assumed you would just tell her Eric feels so guilty for deceiving her all those years that heâs going overboard.â I reply.
âI did, but you have to admit it seems like a bit much â even for him!â Linda replies.
âBesides Iâm not expecting you to take credit for everything â Devon agreed to say the babysitting service and personal gifts are from him.â I supply, smiling at the she-wolfâs indignation.
âAnd her companyâs stock portfolio?â Linda gripes, âhow are you going to explain that one?â
âAngel investors.â I answer easily. âItâs not like thatâs out of the realm of possibilities after all â La Louve is the most profitable fragrance company on the market, any number of hedge funds would be thrilled to invest.â
âYou know that this is crazy, right?â Linda grouses.
âShe would so much rather have you, Ethan. Not to mention Paisley.â
âBelieve it or not, Iâve heard all this from Matthew and Devon already.â I inform her stubbornly. âBut Iâve made up my mind. I want the best for my family, and thatâs not me.â
Linda sighs, a heavy, beleaguered sound that makes it clear she thinks Iâm being completely unreasonable. âAre there any updates on your condition?â She asks after a moment. âI mean is the prognosis still terrible?â
âMy doctors just told me about a potential surgery.â
I relate, somewhat reluctantly. âItâs risky, and if it goes wrong I could end up worse off than before. â
âRisky how?â Linda clarifies.
âWell thereâs still so much fluid compressing my spinal cord that any surgery would apparently be very difficult because they canât actually see my nerve pathways. If they knick the wrong thing then my paralysis could become truly permanent, or more extensive than it already is.â I explain.
And then I truly would have a death sentence.â
âBut I thought the braces were helping you?â Linda responds, trying to understand. âDidnât they tell you that the more you keep your body moving, the more the swelling would decrease? Is it possible to keep up the physical therapy so the swelling decreases enough to make the surgery more viable?â
âMaybe.â I confirm. âAnd I think thatâs what I have to do anyway â I might be willing to risk the surgery if things were more stable with the pack, or if I was in worse condition. If I started to really lose it then I might attempt it anyway â because at that point I wouldnât be doing the pack or Paisley any good by waiting. Luckily having Paisley here is helping my wolf stay calm.â
âI still canât believe that Jane let her go.â Linda laments. âShe must be heartbroken.â
âShe was pretty devastated,â I share grimly. âBut it wonât be forever. If I donât find a way to get better Paisley will be back with Jane and the other pups within the year.â I can practically hear Linda wince.
She hates listening to me talk about my possible death so matter-of-factly, but I donât see any benefit in ignoring reality. That wonât help anyone.
âArenât you afraid of having her around when youâre in this state?â Linda presses.
âYes, but she really didnât give us an option. Sheâs a stubborn little thing.â I remark, unable to keep a hint of pride out of my voice.
âSheâs her fatherâs daughter.â Linda counters dryly, taking a moment to let her words sink in. âHowâs she holding up?â
âShe misses them.â I relate, âbut it gets a little easier every day, and they talk on the phone constantly.â
âGood.â Linda breathes. âYouâll let me know if you need anything?â
âYes.â I promise.
âAnd youâll warn me before you decide to -I donât know, buy Jane a castle and sign my name on the card?â She adds, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
âYou have my word.â I laugh. âBye Linda.â
After I hang up, I finish getting ready for the day, drop Paisley off at school and head for the pack headquarters. However when I arrive, I find Matthew waiting outside my office, looking very nervous indeed. Things have been tense between us lately. He understands my determination to do right by the pack and my family with whatever time I have left, but I know he disagrees with me about what ârightâ
is. The closest we came to actually being on the same page is when I decided to bring Paisley home.
âIs everything alright?â I ask, my heart skipping a beat. My immediate thought is of Jane and the pups;
has something happened? Am l just jumping to conclusions?
Matthew pales when he sees me, and my suspicions increase. Oh Goddess, what is it. He slowly rises from his armchair. âI have to tell you something, and I need you to be calm when I do.â
It speaks volumes that Matthew is still afraid of my temper despite my paralysis, but I hate the trepidation on his face. âWhy, whatâs wrong?â I demand. As strange as it seems, the scent of Matthewâs fear calms me slightly, telling me this isnât about delivering bad news, but something else entirely.
âI did something.â Matthew confesses vaguely.
And youâre not going to like it.â
I narrow my eyes, feeling as though Iâm on a roller coaster of emotion. Worried then calm, now near panicked that Matthew might have betrayed my confidence. âWhat? What did you do?â
âEthan,â Matthew begins, raising his palms in supplication. âYouâve been doing so much better lately, but youâre still trying to do everything on your own and it simply isnât working. You were a different man when Jane was here, and I understand why you couldnât let her Stay, but that doesnât mean you canât get help from someone else.â
âMatthew, what did you do?â I snap, not liking the direction this is taking one bit.
âI called Nina.â Matthewâs voice is barely audible, but I heard him loud and clear.
âNina?â I repeat, aghast. âAs in-?â
âAs in, your fated mate.â Matthew confirms. âIâve been tracking her ever since you two met all those years ago â just in case. I thought if you wouldnât let Jane help you, you might let her.â
âHave you lost your mind?â I thunder. âWhat part of âthe people closest to me are in the most dangerâ
donât you understand? Moreover, what in the Goddessâs name makes you think I can trust this woman?
I met her for two hours almost a decade ago â for all you know sheâll betray my secret to the entire pack!â
âOh come off it!â Matthew grumbles back. âShe wouldnât have any motive to do that. If she cares for you, sheâll want to help. If she doesnât, sheâll either go away or sheâll stick around to take advantage of your status like Eve. Either way you spin it, she benefits from keeping the secret.â
âI canât believe you did this without talking to me first!â I hiss, groaning as my wolf tries to break free.
âYou would have stopped me!â Matthew shouts, raising his voice at me for the first time in my memory.
âYou arenât yourself right now, Ethan.
You were fvcking suicidal a few weeks ago and as thrilled as I am that youâve turned things around, I donât trust you not to go down that path again if things take a turn for the worse! I canât just stand by and watch you suffer without trying everything I can to help you. Not as your Beta and certainly not as your friend. It will be good for you and Paisley both.â
âI donât care!â I roar, feeling beyond betrayed.
Matthew has never defied me this way.âYou didnât have any right! I ought to remove you from your position.â
âI had every right!â Matthew combats. âI have served you loyally since we were eighteen years old and I have been your best friend for another ten years on top of that! If anyone has the right to give you a kick in the p*nts when your stubborn as-s deserves it, itâs me. And we both know you arenât going to fire me- you might want to, but if Iâm gone youâll have to trust someone else with your secret and we both know thereâs no one as loyal to you as I am.â
âFine, I wonât fire you.â I grit out, pacing awkwardly in my braces. âJust undo it.â I order. âWhatever it takes, call her back and tell her not to come.â
âYou donât understandâ Matthew states grimly, shaking his head. âThis didnât just happen. I called her the other day.â
âWhat are you saying?â I demand fiercely.
âIâm saying that sheâs already here.â Matthew confesses, glancing towards my closed office, âand sheâs right on the other side of those doors.
