Chapter 12
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
Chapter 12 Pups found dad âIâm sure it was our Daddy.â Riley insists, relating the strange events in the restaurant to her brothers.
âThe little girl who looked like me said I was her sister, and the man looked just like you â only growned up!â
âBut how do we find him?â Parker questions, working the problem over in his mind.
âWe could ask Auntie Linda?â Ryder suggests, âI bet she knows.â
âMommy wonât like it.â Riley cautions, âShe didnât wanna tell me âbout Daddy at all.â
âMommy doesnâ have to know.â Ryder decides, âSheâs jusâ scared.â
âRyderâs right.â Parker agrees. âShe never wants to tell us âbout Daddy. This stays between us.â
âBut wonât Auntie Linda just refuse? Riley asks.
âNot if we trick her.â Parker reasons, a mischievous glint in his eye.
A few hours later the pups were safely ensconced in the back seat of Lindaâs car while Jane was at work, and one by one, they put their plan into motion.
âAuntie Linda, did you know our Daddy?â Ryder asks slyly.
âI did.â She confirms, not sharing anything more.
âWhat was he like?â Parker presses.
âWell, he was an Alpha,â Linda shares. âHe was very strong and smart, just like all of you.â
âBut who is he?â Riley inquires, âwhy arenât he and Mommy married?â
âI think these are questions you should ask your Mommy.â Linda sighs.
âBut Mommyâs not here!â Ryder complains.
âPlease tell us,â Parker requests, giving the she-wolf his best puppy-dog eyes.
âWell,â Linda hedges, âYour Mommy and Daddy arenât married because sometimes grown up relationships are complicated. You can love someone and not be good for each other⦠does that make sense?â
âNo.â The children chime in unison.
âOne day youâll understand.â Linda promises. âI know itâs hard right now, but youâll see. Your Mommy did what she thought was best for you.â
âAnd our Daddy?â Parker questions.
âYour Daddy is a good man, he wants whatâs best for you, and being with your Mommy is whatâs best.â
Linda reasons.
The pups exchange looks, this sounds like the usual things grown ups say, but they arenât convinced. All of their friends have both Mommies and Daddies at home, and theyâve never understood why theyâre different. They want to be a real family, and they wonât accept anything less.
âDo you know our Daddyâs name?â Riley asks.
âI do,â Linda admits hesitantly.
âWill you tell us?â Ryder begs.
âAll right, but just his first name.â Linda agrees. After all, the pups are only four, how much could they possibly learn with so little information? âYour Daddyâs name is Ethan.â
Jane âWe have to leave, Linda.â I moan, burying my face in my hands. Weâre seated at my friendâs kitchen table, chatting at the end of the long day. âWeâve had too many close calls and the longer Iâm here, the more precarious our situation becomes.â
Goddess, Iâve already met Paisley twice, and the second time! was forced to be unconscionably cruel to protect my identity. What kind of woman does that? What kind of mother harms her child to protect herself? Iâm so ashamed of my actions ! wish I could sink into the ground and disappear.
âIf Ethan finds out about Riley, Parker and Ryder heâll take them away from me. I know it.â | lament, despite the fact that Linda hasnât argued. The mere thought of losing my babies makes my insides twist into knots.
âAre you sure?â Linda asks, âI canât see Ethan doing something like that.â As much as I love Linda, I canât stand it when she defends Ethan. I donât understand why she does it, she knows how bad things were before I left.
âBefore we were married I couldnât see Ethan enslaving me either.â I argue, âand just look at how that turned out.â
âOkay.â Linda agrees, âYouâre right. He had his chance in the past and he blew it.â She eyes me curiously. âBut what about the deal with Eve?â
âI donât have to be here in person to fulfill the deal.â | counter, âI can get her to carry my line without personally overseeing the launch.â
âWhy are you even working with her?â Linda asks for the fifth time.
âBecause sheâs so desperate to get a win that sheâs willing to pay double, and besides, this way I can keep an eye on her. Iâll get the contracts signed and then the kids and I will return home. I canât stay here any longer, no matter how badly I want to.â Originally iâd planned on staying in the Nightfang territory for a few months. I wanted to be nearby through the final stages of Paisleyâs treatment, and I never imagined things would get so complicated â especially not this quickly.
âThatâs probably safest.â Linda agrees, looking disappointed. âThe pups were asking about Ethan today.â
Fear paralyzes me, âWhat did you tell them?â
âNothing they could use to find him.â She promises, âI simply explained that adult relationships are complicated, and the best place for them is with you.â
âThatâs all?â I ask nervously. Linda doesnât know my children as well as I do, she doesnât realize how clever they can be with only tiny pieces of information. Most four year olds are still grappling with learning shapes, but my little ones are already reading full length books and learning to play instruments.
âThatâs all.â Linda confirms. âThey couldnât find him even if they wanted to.â
âGoogle: Alpha Ethan.â Parker instructs, leaning over Ryder as he sits in front of Lindaâs desktop computer.
âAnd Nightfang.â Riley adds sensibly, âI saw him here, so this is probably his pack.â
Ryder, who the other pups always consider the youngest because he was born ten minutes after Riley and thirty minutes after Parker, dutifully follows his siblingâs instructions, slowly pushing down keys and watching the corresponding letters appear on the glowing screen. When the phrase is complete, he excitedly hammers the âenterâ button and all three children wait for the results to populate with bated breath.
Within moments, images of the same man Riley met in the restaurant fill the page, and the boys murmur murmur in unison. âHe looks just like us!
âThatâs him, and look!â Riley exclaims, pointing at a photo a little further down in the results, âthat must be our sister!â
Clicking on the link next to the image, their tiny faces light up vith glee when they read the imposing Alphaâs biography. Ethan Blackwell, age 30: became the youngest Alpha in Nightfang history after challenging his corrupt and tyrannical uncle for control of the pack when he was just 19 years old. Known for his intelligence, extraordinary strength, and integrity, Blackwellâs life has not been without tragedy. Four years ago the Alphaâs chosen mate, Jane Blackwell, died in childbirth. Devastated by the loss, Ethanâs young daughter Paisley provided the only silver lining in this tragedy. He has described her on more than one occasion as âthe greatest gift heâs ever been given,â
The pups reel back from the screen in surprise. âWhy does it say Mommy died?â Ryder wonders aloud.
âThey must only think she died.â Parker assesses, âAfter all â that is Mommyâs name.â
âHow are we going to ask her âbout it?â Ryder replies.
âLeave that to me.â Riley instructs with a devious grin.
A little while later, as the young family is walking down the street, Jane stops at a coffee cart and Riley skips over to the news stand. This is exactly what she hoped would happen. Sheâs always loved looking at all the glossy magazine covers while Mommy waits for her coffee, and she knows how often the Alpha in their own territory appears on the front page. Chirping in excitement, her small hand snatches a thick publication from the waiting stack, âMommy look! Itâs the mar from the restaurant!â
