Rhaegon and Laenas chambers
After having sex with Laena and Rhaenyra, Rhaegon poured himself some wine and sat on a chair. Both women were passed out from the pleasure that they received from Rhaegon.
"I swear it's as if your aim is to tire us out." Laena said when she walked to her husband.
"I promise it's not my goal, my wife." Rhaegon chuckled. Laena poured herself some wine and sat across from her husband. "Rhaenyra still asleep?" Rhaegon asked.
"Yes, she is." Laena answered. "Why are you here alone?"
"I couldn't sleep." Rhaegon said.
"Nightmares?" Laena asked.
"Just some thoughts running in my mind." Rhaegon said.
Laena smiled. "You can talk to me if you wish."
"I know, but it's nothing." Rhaegon said.
"I can tell when you're lying." Laena said. "If I guess what's bothering you, will you start opening up to me?" She asked.
"Very well." Rhaegon smiled.
"I think you're worried about your father. You see, you've forgiven him long ago, and you're afraid of losing him." Laena said. "You're far more affected by things than you care to admit. You wish to control things rather than to have it control you. The inevitable parts of life make you uneasy."
"Well, some say that death is inevitable, and yet here I stand after taking a sword through my heart and drinking the most expensive wine with my beautiful wife while my lover sleeps in our chambers. I share a combined force of six children. I am the perfect portrait of vitality and health. A conquerer of death itself." Rhaegon smirked.
"That's my point. You make it seem to think that death means nothing to you by making jokes. I'm sure you don't care about your own death, but you do care about the deaths of others." Laena said.
"So beneath all that strength, Rhaegon Targaryen has a fear of the ones closest to him dying?" Rhaegon chuckled. "I will tell you what I know about death, Laena. It dances silently in everyone's shadow, and he doesn't give a damn. So why would I give a damn about him?" Rhaegon sipped his wine.
"You do care, Rhaegon. Why else would you surround yourself with dragonriders?" Laena asked. Rhaegon continued drinking his wine. "You disagree? Very well. I hope it's a long time before I'm proven right."
Rhaegon chuckled. "You're lucky I love you. Otherwise, you'd be whipped for talking to the crown prince as you are now."
"Y... you love me?" Laena was shocked by this confession. In the last ten years that they've been married, Rhaegon has never once said those words to her.
"I do." Rhaegon confidently said. "It's not as much as Rhaenyra, but I love you, Laena. I love your heart. I love your mind. The crown prince chuckled. I love that you always put others above yourself."
Laena walked to her husband and placed his cup of wine on the table. She then climbed on top of him and passionately kissed him. Minutes later, husband and wife made love on the couch.
Present day
After taking the dead body of his wife to bed, he saw Moribund smirking at the crown prince.
"What you do now will determine your rule, boy." Moribund said.
Rhaegon said nothing and walked to maester Gerardys. "Send a letter to King's and to Driftmark. The princess consort is dead."
"Yes, my prince." Maester Gerardys tended to his task.
King's Landing
Viserys' chambers
The King had received word a few days ago that his hand, Lord Lyonel and Harwin Strong, had passed away. Viserys told the queen that they were off to Dragonstone. He needed to comfort his son.
"Forgive me, your grace. I bring word from Dragonstone." The royal steward entered the kings chambers and handed the letter to him. Once the king read the letter, he shed some tears.
"Summon the queen." Viserys ordered, and the royal steward left the room.
Alicent entered her husband's room and saw him in tears. "Your grace?"
"The lady Laena has passed. Assassins tried to kill her and Rhaegons' family. We leave for Dragonstone immediately." The king said.
"Y...yes, of course, husband." Alicent panicked even more now. She suspected that Larys was involved in this somehow.
Oldtown
Otto chambers
Ser Otto Hightower had received a letter that invited him to serve as Hand of the king once again, and a few days later he received a letter that was meant for his son, Gwayne, but Otto read it anyway.
He immediately rushed to find his son, and Gwayne was drinking with his nephew Ormund.
"Might I have a word with my son, my lord?" Otto asked.
"Of course." Ormund left the room.
"You look very relaxed, son." Otto said once Ormund left.
"Why shouldn't I be?" Gwayne arrogantly asked.
Otto walked closer to his son, and Gwayne took a few steps back. Otto then poured himself some wine and drank it all in one go. Suddenly, he smacked Gwayne in his face.
Gwayne touched his busted lip. "What was that for?" He asked his father, and instead of responding, Otto smacked his son again. He had never raised his hand to his children, but Otto was beyond angry.
"You've made a mess!" Otto shouted and threw the letter at Gwayne.
Once Gwayne read it, he groaned. "That's what I get for hiring idiots." This angered Otto more, and he punched his son in his stomach. Gwayne then puked on the floor.
Once Otto felt calm, he poured himself another cup of wine and drank it. "You decided all on your own to assassinate the most dangerous man in Westeros?"
"He ruined his house when he fathered bastards from Rhaenyra, and as I recall, you wanted him gone so that Aegon could rule.: Gwayne pointed out.
"Yes. Yes, I did." Otto said. "Do you understand what you've done?"
"I saved our family! Gwayne spat and otto smacked him again.
Otto sighed. "Do you know why the realm never talks about the second War of the Stepstones?" Gwayne shook his head. "I thought so. Five years ago, the king enlisted some of our knights to fight in the war. The few that came back told the tale. 5000 men sent to war against 15 000 Triarchy. Rhaegon mounted his dragon and laid waste to all of them. It seemed enough for the Triarchy to stop, but Rhaegon chose to make an example out of the pirates." Otto sighed. "Rhaegon is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer will. Surrounding the fortifications that were built, the dead and burnt Triarchy pirates staked through their mouths. Fifteen. Thousand. Men. The war was over, and Rhaegon returned a hero. He then chose to live a life of peace. He buried Blackfyre and raised his children. Including the ones he sired with Rhaenyra. For the first time since I sent Alicent to the king, I truly believed the realm could thrive under Rhaegons rule, but then my son decides to wake the black dragon doom noy only our entire line, but the realm, by failing to assassinate the crown prince and having his consort killed." Otto was seething.
Gwayne was quivering in fear, realizing what he had actually done. "Father, I can fix this."
"Oh. How do you plan on doing that?" Otto curiously asked.
"By killing Rhaegon Targaryen myself." Gwayne said.
"W... did you here a fucking word I just said?!" Otto yelled.
"I can do this father. Please give me your blessing." Gwayne begged.
"Oh, my son." Otto hugged Gwayne and pulled his hair back to whisper in his ear. "When Rhaegon Targaryen finds out what you have done, and mark my words he will find out. He will come for you, and no one will able to stop him. Not the king. Not I. Not even the Seven put together. Know this, my son. Everything you've heard about Rhaegon has been watered down for childrens ears. Now get out of my sight so that I can try to fix the fucking mess you've created."
Gwayne left and immediately went to his room to write a letter to his associates.
Dragonstone
The king arrived on Dragonstone with his second wife and children. He was met by Daemon, Cerelle and Rhaenyra.
"Where is he?" Viserys asked.
In the courtyard. Daemon said. He put his children to sleep and hasn't stopped training since. "I've already written to Lord Corlys and princess Rhaenys."
"I'm worried about him father." Rhaenyra said.
"As am I." Viserys looked at his Kingsguard. "I will see my son."
"My love perhaps you should rest after such a long journey-" Alicent tried to protest and was cut off by the king.
"I said I will see my son." The king sternly said. Once they reached the courtyard, they found Rhaegon destroying everything in sight. Broken straw dummies and wooden swords were scattered on the floor. Tables and chairs were also broken. "Rhaegon?" Viserys called son.
Rhaegon turned to face his father, his face was red with anger.
"This is your fault!" Rhaegon yelled.
"Leave us." Viserys told the group and once they left he looked at his son. Rhaegon had broken a chair and flipped a table. "This won't bring her back, my son."
"I should've never let you betroth me to her! Laena was fine. She was safe! If you hadn't forced me to marry her, she'd still be alive!" Rhaegon spat.
"I'm sorry, she's gone, my son, but you still have your family, and the legacy you wish to build-" Viserys was cut off by Rhaegon.
"I don't care about my legacy! The mother of my children is dead and it's all my fault! Do you hear me?!" Rhaegon was in tears, and Viserys realized that Rhaegon blamed himself for Laenas death.
Viserys dropped his cane and walked to his son. Rhaegon was on his knees, crying in defeat for his loss. Viserys slowly knelt down and looked at his son.
"You may think I know not what you feel, but I do." Viserys said. "Months after your mother's passing, I couldn't even say her name without shedding tears. I'm sorry that you have to go through this, my son." The king hugged his son and Rhaegon held on to his father.
Chamber of the painted table
A few hours later
"Where is he?" Alicent asked.
"Resting." Viserys said. "We depart for Driftmark on the morrow."
"I'm aware." Alicent nodded. "My father says he'll meet us there. He's also grateful for his reinstatement as Hand of the King."
"Mm. After Lord Lyonels passing, I needed a strong Hand. While your fathers motives are questionable, I cannot pretend that he's not strong." Viserys said.
Rhaenyra rushed into the chamber. "Father. It's Rhaegon." Without hesitation Viserys immediately walked to find his son.
Rhaegons and Laenas chambers
Rhaegon stood in his room and was wielding a warhammer. He then aimed it at the floor and seconds later he brought the hammer down as had as he could.
"What are you doing?" Daemon asked.
"What I failed to do before. Defending my family." Rhaegon then brought the hammer down again. He repeated this until a wooden case was revealed. He parted the rubble from the case and opened it. Inside was Blackfyre, the weapon that Rhaegon would use to kill those who would dare harm his family.
"My son." Viserys tearfully stared at Rhaegon. Once Blackfyre was strapped to Rhaegon he looked at his father.
"I'm taking my children to Driftmark. We'll meet you all there." Rhaegon then walked out of the room. Daemon looked at his nephew. Rhaegon knew something, but didn't tell him or Rhaenyra.
Driftmark
A week later
Hall of Nine
"I'm sorry, princess. My lord." Rhaegon apologized to his in-laws.
"We do not blame you, my prince." Corlys said.
"I still blame myself. The maggots came for me, but Laena paid the price." Rhaegon said.
"She protected her children." Rhaenys tearfully said.
"Laena will be honored in these halls, and her children are her legacy, my prince." Corlys said.
"No child deserves to lose a mother, especially so young." Rhaegon said. "The funeral will be in two days."
"Thank you for bringing her home, Rhaegon." Rhaenys said.
"It's where she belongs." Rhaegon left the halls.
Rhaegons chambers
Rhaegon arrived in his chambers and found his children asleep on his bed. He smiled and sat on the chair opposite his bed.
"Papa?" Baela called out.
"I thought you were sleeping." Rhaegon said.
"It's difficult to sleep." Baela said.
"Don't wake your siblings." Rhaegon said and Baela carefully got out of bed. "I'm sorry. I couldn't protect your mother."
Baela held her fathers hand. "It's not your fault, father."
"Someone wanted me gone, and now they'll pay for taking your mother away from us." Rhaegon spat.
Baelas tears ran down her face. "I know you didn't love mother as much as you love Rhaenyra, but you loved her enough. Make them pay, father."
"I love you, my girl. You, your brother and sister are all I have left from your mother and I swear to you that I will fight for you until my last breath." Rhaegon said.
"I love you, papa." Baela hugged her father. Seconds later, Rhaena and Corwyn woke up as well and hugged their father.
2 days later
It was a sad day for house Velaryon for the funeral of Laena had taken place. The men had tied ropes in the casket that held Laena and her babe. Vaemond Velaryon was saying his farewells to his niece. Alicent stood with her children, while king Viserys stood with his son and his grandchildren, Baela, Rhaena and Corwyn. The king did not want his son to feel alone. Rhaenys held her three grand children close to her as she and her husband, Lord Corlys also stood with Rhaegon.
"We join today at the Seat of the Sea to commit Laena of house Velaryon to the eternal waters, the dominion of the Merlin King where He will guard her for all the days to come." As Vaemond was speaking, Rhaenys held Vaela tightly as if she were Laena herself. "As she sets sea for her final voyage, the Lady Laena leaves one true-born son and two true-born daughters on the shore."
The Targaryen family stood in support of Rhaegon, Corwyn, Baela, and Rhaena. Aegon was visibly bored, and Aemond asked if he could stand at Rhaegons' side, but his mother said no.
"Though their mother will not return from her voyage, they all remain together in blood." Otto, who was reinstated as Hand, and he adjusted his collar with shaking hands. He wondered if the crown prince knew what Gwayne had done.
"Salt courses through Velaryon blood." Vaemond said as he turned to look directly at Rhaenyra and her three children with disgust. "Ours runs thick, ours runs true." Everyone who could understand high valyrian not only knew what Vaemond was saying, but they understood why he was saying it, and Rhaegon noticed that Rhaenyra was uncomfortable. "And ours must never thin."
Rhaegon then started to chuckle and took the attention from Rhaenyra and directed it to him. He hadn't spoken to Rhaenyra she arrived because he was helping with the funeral arrangements as soon as he woke up, the Velaryon soldiers then pulled the ropes that was holding the casket so that it could slide down.
"My gentle niece, may the winds be as strong as your back, your seas as calm as your spirit, and your nets be as full as your heart." Vaemond continued his speech. Rhaenyra kept looking at Rhaegon, and Laenor stood next to Rhaenyra and was broken at the loss of his sister.
"From the see we came to the sea, we shall return." The casket was released to fall into the waters for now. Laena Velaryon was laid to rest.
After the funeral, a small feast was held. Alicent was talking to Ser Criston. Rhaenyra had walked in and looked directly at Rhaegon. She wanted to talk to him but rather waited until he was alone. Rhaenyra looked to her right and saw that Alicent was looking at her and noticed Rhaenyra staring at her brother.
Rhaenyra quickly walked to her left and saw her eldest Jace. "Have you seen your father?" She asked him, and he shook his head. "Your little cousins have lost their mother. They could use a kind word."
"I have an equal claim to sympathy." Jace said bitterly.
"Jace -" Rhaenyra tried but was cut off by her son.
"We should be standing with Rhaegon Targaryen. My true father." Jace said. Rhaenyra looked around to see if anyone heard Jace.
"That would not be appropriate." Rhaenyra knelt down to his level. "The Velaryons are our kin, yes, but none can hear yoy say Rhaegon is your father. She whispered. Look at me, do you understand?"
Jace then left to talk to Corwyn, Baela, and Rhaena, and Rhaenyra spotted the queen looking at her again.
King Viserys walked to his son. He desperately wanted to talk to Rhaegon and ask him to come back to King's Landing permanently.
"Your children are the very image of their mother. A comfort and anguish, as I well remember." Viserys said, and Rhaegon only stared at his father. "You should return with us to King's Landing. It's time you return home, permanently."
"Dragonstone is my home, and that of my children." Rhaegon said.
"My son... do not let this loss destroy you. You always have a home in King's Landing and will help you with anything you need." Viserys said.
"You've reinstated Otto as your Hand." Rhaegon said.
"The post was meant for you, but you're grieving. It would not be appropriate to put such a burden on your shoulders." Viserys said.
"I only wish to be left alone, father." Rhaegon then walked off.
"I'm sorry for your loss, my prince." Rhaegon heard Otto offer his condolences.
"Thank you, Lord Hand." He then shook Ottos' hand and walked off. When Otto opened his hand, he was in shock. It was the steel token of House Hightower melted with a firefly. This was the confirmation that Rhaegon knew that the Hightowers were involved with the crown princes attempted assassination, but he didn't know what the firefly meant.
Both Daemon and Rhaenyra saw Rhaegon walk off. Rhaenyra looked at her children. "Go to bed." She said.
"Mother -" Jace was cut off by Rhaenyra.
"Go to bed." Rhaenyra said more sternly.
"See the children to bed." Daemon told his wife, and Cerelle nodded. He then walked with his niece to find Rhaegon.
