Blood of the Dragon[on Hold]
Kingswood
"I don't understand why I have to come with." Aegon grumbled.
"Because I'm your older brother, and you have to listen to me whether you like it or not." Rhaegon said. "Besides walking in the woods should be better than you spending the day skinning your sausage." The boy's started laughing at Aegon.
"Why are we here, Father?" Corwyn asked.
"Because today, Jace is going to fly a dragon." Rhaegon calmly said, and the color was drained from Jace' face
"I don't think I'm ready, uncle." Jace said.
"I believe you are, I believe that you're more ready than you think." Rhaegon said.
They arrived on the mountain and found Ser Laenor and ser Harwin waiting for them. A few minutes later, Rhaegon heard a powerful roar and smirked. His dragon Slyrak arrived with his dragonling Vermax.
"What are we doing here?" Laenor asked.
"Well, Jace is going to fly." Rhaegon said. "Vermax is of flight age, and I was younger than Jace when I flew on Slyrak."
"Perhaps we could try from a lower point?" Laenor suggested.
"This is the lowest mountain there is." Rhaegon pointed out. "Jace will be fine. At least climb on."
Jace nodded and climbed on Vermax and fastened himself with the help of Rhaegon. Vermax then stepped forward till he was on the edge of the mountain, and Jace looked down.
"I can't do it, uncle. I'm afraid." Jace said.
"Thought as much." Aegon laughed.
"Enough, Aegon." Rhaegon said, and Aegon was immediately silent. "Jace, that fear is temporary, but I promise it will disappear once you fly."
"You don't have to do anything that you don't want you, Jace." Laenor said.
Rhaegon sighed. "Do it, Slyrak." The crown prince commanded, and Slyrak pushed Vermax forward with his snout, and the dragonling fell off the mountain.
"RHAEGON!" Laenor yelled. He and the boys were frightened for Jace' life now.
Jace was falling with Vermax at tremendous speed. "Fly Vermax!" Jace commanded as he pulled up. "Fly!" In this moment of fear, he remembered Rhaegon telling him that he is a dragon and that the blood of a dragon flows in his veins. "I said fly!" Jace pulled up harder, and at the last second, Vermax flapped his wings, and seconds later, the dragonling and his rider were in the air.
"Told you he could do it." Rhaegon bragged, and all Laenor did was smile and shake his head.
"There's no way you could've known that would've worked." Harwin said.
"Of course I could've. Jace has the blood of the dragon in his veins." Rhaegon smirked and ran to the edge of the mountain and jumped off. This gave the boys a fright. Slyrak then flew off to catch his rider, and the Crimson beast effortlessly did so. Rhaegon then caught up with Vermax and Jace. Father and son flew together.
"He didn't bring his saddle, did he?" Harwin asked.
"No." Laenor chuckled. "No, he didn't. That's Rhaegon Targaryen for you."
A few hours later, they finally stopped flying, and Jacaerys couldn't wait to tell his mother. Rhaegon let him go and reminded him that he had training later on.
Aegon and Aemond watched as Rhaegon and Ser Harwin train.
"I could easily do that." Aegon spat.
"Then go. Do it." Aemond dared Aegon.
"Shut up." Aegon spat. He didn't hate Rhaegon, but he never understood why his father would spend more time with Rhaegon than any of his other children, even though Rhaegon spent a lot of time with his half siblings, Aegon needed a father.
"Did you know that the people believe that Rhaegon bathes in dragon fire?" Aemond asked.
"No one bathes in dragon fire, idiot." Aegon spat.
"You're dead." Rhaegon said as he had his sword at Harwins chest. Harwin then tried to attack, but Rhaegon spun and had his sword at Harwins neck. "Dead again. You're sloppy since you became commander of the gold cloaks."
"Yes, well, I barely have training time while stopping murderers and thieves." Harwin said. "So what's next?"
"I promised my father I'd help him with his Old Valyria model, and I also have to attend a small council meeting later." Rhaegons said. "You see, I have all these duties, and I make time for training." Rhaegon patted his friend on his shoulder.
Harwin chuckled. "I almost forgot to ask. Why don't you have Blackfyre with you anymore?"
"I still have it, I just buried it." Rhaegon said. The crown prince then walked away. Rhaegon walked to his father's chambers and found Alicent leave in anger. "Your grace. Is everything alright?"
She had just come from the kings chambers and told him that she knows Rhaenyras children are Rhaegons. "Apologies, my prince. I've just had a talk with the king, and I seemed to have angered him." Alicent said.
"My prince." Ser Criston greeted.
"Well, perhaps I could talk to him." Rhaegon suggested, ignoring Ser Criston.
"It's not necessary, my prince. Once his blood cools, he'll be better." Alicent said
"Very well." Rhaegon entered his father's chambers. "Do I even wish to know why your queen left here in anger?" The crown prince asked the king.
Viserys chuckled. "Just foul gossip. Nothing to concern yourself with."
Rhaegon nodded. "Where's your assistant?"
"I told him that we could continue later." Viserys said. "Earlier, I asked Baela and Rhaena to join me, and while Rhaena was excited to, young Baela wanted to go for a flight. It seems she gets her fascination with dragons from her father."
Rhaegon chuckled. "Yes, well. She has the blood of the dragon in her. How are you feeling?"
"I always feel better when I spend time with my heir." Viserys smiled.
Rhaegon laughed. "Jacaerys finally flew on Vermax."
"Oh. Well, I'm impressed." Viserys said. "I take it you're the one who motivated him?"
"Well, if by motivate I had Slyrak push vermax off a mountain while Jacaerys mounted the dragonling." Rhaegon said.
"Rhaegon!" The king yelled.
"I made sure Jace was fastened tightly." Rhaegon defended himself.
"He could've gotten hurt." Viserys said.
"I'd never let that happen." Rhaegon said.
Viserys smiled at his son. "I know. After all, you're not far away from bringing Dorne to our side, uniting the Seven Kingdoms as one."
Rhaegon chuckled. "Sometimes, I feel like I'm not doing enough."
"I suppose it depends on how you look at it, son." Viserys said.
"What do you mean?" Rhaegon asked.
"When you were a child, I always knew that you were different. That you would surpass me as a prince, and when I was named heir, Jaehaerys himself saw it in you." Viserys said.
"You're a good king, father." Rhaegon said.
"But you are better." Viserys smiled at his son. "Rhaegon. You inspire the next generation of Targaryens. You give the smallfolk hope. You make a difference in this world." The king chuckled. "You were chosen to lead in a way that I could only imagine. You're not just meant to be a king but a symbol. Don't ever doubt yourself, my son."
"Thank you, Father." Rhaegon said. "It's all because of you."
Father and son spent hours sculpting. Rhaegon loved his father and forgave him for what was done to his mother, but he was afraid of losing his father.
Training Yard
Ser Criston watched with disgust how Rhaegon and Rhaenyras children were swinging their swords. He had to admit that the boys were good since Rhaegon trained them himself. He also trained Aegon and Aemond, but the Cole knight tried his best to train them his way.
"Soften you knees. Feet light." Criston instructed Aemond. "Keep your feet light and your hands heavy."
From above, the King was sitting and watching the boys train, and accompanying him was the Hand Lyonel Strong.
Viserys chuckled. "This is the stuff, Lyonel. Lads that learn together, train together, knock each other down, and pick each other up. They will certainly form a lifelong bond, wouldn't you agree?" He asked his hand.
"With Rhaegon keeping them in check, that is the hope, your grace." Lyonel said.
Aemond then hit Jace' sword down. "Don't stand upright, my prince. You'll get knocked down. Criston said."
The boys got distracted when they saw Rhaegon training against Ser Harwin.
"One day, I'm going to be as good as him." Jace said.
"You wish. No one is better than Rhaegon." Aemond praised.
"I've won my first bout. My opponent sues for mercy." Aegon said arrogantly.
"Then you shall have a new opponent, my lord of the straw." Ser Criston said. "Let's see if you can touch me. You and your brother." Aemond stepped forward, and they engaged against Ser Criston. Him being the more experienced fight easily defeated them while Corwyn, Jace, and Luke watched.
"Must take a real man to beat children, Ser Criston." Rhaegon said.
"It is only a lesson, my prince." Ser Criston said.
"Perhaps, but the younger children cannot learn it only from watching." Rhaegon said.
Ser Criston nodded. "Very well. Corwyn, come here. You spar with Aegon. Eldest son against eldest son." If Rhaegon wasn't present, Criston would've dragged the 6 year old boy by his neck if he had to.
"This is not a fair match." Rhaegon said.
"You seen true battle, my prince. You should know that when steel is drawn, a fair match is not to be expected." Ser Criston said.
"I meant this isn't a fair match for Aegon." Rhaegon smirked. He then looked at his son. "Don't hold back."
Aegon clashed with his nephew, and while Aegon was stronger, Corwyn was faster. Aegon became frustrated and pushed a straw dummy at Corwyn.
"Foul play." Harwin said.
"Corwyn. Look at me." Rhaegon said. "You're smaller and faster. Take his legs and put him on his back." Corwyn nodded at his father.
The children engaged again, and this time, Corwyn managed to dodge Aegons kick and grapple his leg. He put Aegon on the ground and had his wooden sword pointed at Aegon.
"Yield." Corwyn said.
Rhaegon laughed. "That's very good, son." Corwyn smiled and ran to his father. Aegon was seething. He got up and proceeded to attack Corwyn but stopped when Rhaegon stepped in front of his son. "Enough." Rhaegon grabbed his brothers sword and threw it aside.
"You can't!" Aegon shouted.
"Aegon!" Viserys scolded from above.
"It's alright, father." Rhaegon assured. He then looked at Aegon and walked closer to him. "You're not a coward. Don't act like one."
"So this is what you teach, Cole? Cruelty?" Ser Harwin asked.
"Your interest in the princes training is quite unusual, commander." Criston said. "One might only show that kind of devotion to the crown princes' cousins, or his brothers...or his sons." Rhaegon noticed how Ser Criston emphasized that Rhaegon had sons and not one son. This angered Harwin, and before Rhaegon could react, Ser Harwin punched Ser Criston. He then got on top of him and punched the Cole knight repeatedly until Rhaegon pulled Harwin off and pushed him.
"Get back inside now!" Rhaegon commander and Harwin stomped off.
Red Keep
After Rhaegon tended to the children, he met with Harwin.
"Rhaegon, let me expl-" Ser Harwins words were cut off when Rhaegon grabbed him by his throat and pushed him against a wall.
"What the fuck have you done?!" Rhaegon shouted.
"I'm sorry, Rhaegon." Harwin apologized.
"If I lose my children because of you, I'll fucking kill you." Rhaegon spat. The crown prince walked away in anger for his best friend.
Rhaegon and Laenas chambers
"Do you think you'll be able to fly safely?" Rhaenyra asked Laena.
"Of course. I've done it before when I was pregnant with Baela, Rhaena and Corwyn." Laena said.
"Yes well, I just want you to be cautious. You shouldn't be traveling in your condition." Rhaenyra said.
"I will be." Laena assured. "So do you think he knows yet?"
"I don't think so. Truth be told, I'm still surprised that he doesn't know." Rhaenyra said. "Are you angry at Rhaegon?"
"I was, but then I realized if I'm angry at him, I'll have to be angry at you as well." Laena said.
"I suppose you're right." Rhaenyra said. "I just wish it wasn't so obvious."
"It's obvious to us, not to Rhaegon. We see the eyes, and we'll never forget those perfect eyes." Laena smiled.
"We should tell him." Rhaenyra said.
"No. Some journey's we cannot be a part of." Laena said. "He has to see it for himself."
"Very well." Rhaenyra said. "When do you leave?"
"In two days. You should join us." Laena said.
"I will, after my discomfort leaves me." Rhaenyra said and Laena chuckled.
Small council chambers
Rhaegon was walking with his brothers Aegon and Aemond to the small council.
"Brother, is it true that you bathe in dragon fire?" Aemond asked.
"No man bathes in dragon fire, idiot." Aegon spat.
"Enough, Aegon." Rhaegon said and looked at Aemond. "No one bathes in dragon fire, Aemond."
"The smallfolk whisper about you speaking to dragons as if you can control them and the talk about the second War of the Stepstones. They say that you killed everyone on your own." Aemond said.
"Thirty thousand men and I was but one." Rhaegon laughed. "The smallfolk will make stories to make themselves feel happy." They entered the small council chambers and found the members already seated. Rhaenyra and Laena have also joined the council after Rhaegon asked his father. "Apologies for my lateness, your grace, my Lords. My ladies."
Rhaenyra was about to say something, but Alicent beat her to it. "No Apologies necessary, my prince. We've barely begun."
"Well then I feel lucky." Rhaegon smirked. "A half cup for me, Aemond, and Aegon take as many notes as best as you can." Rhaegon had asked his father if his brothers, son and "nephews" could serve as a page and cupbearer for the small council, and Viserys happily agreed. This was Aemond and Aegons turn.
:We should address the movements in the Stepstones of late, my Lords." Tyland said.
"Ah yes. Lord Corlys has written to me and he requests that we add 1000 more men. I've already sent word across the realm to send any man they can spare." Rhaegon said.
"I though the fortifications were impenetrable." Lord Jasper said.
"Well obviously it's not, and we do not possess enough coin to fix them, but we can have men guarding them till we do." Rhaegon said.
"Of course, my prince." Jasper said.
"Any word from Prince Qoren Martell?" Rhaegon asked.
"Yes, my prince." Tyland spoke up. "He has accepted your terms to marry his daughter, Aelena to your son, Corwyn when they come of age."
"With Dorne joining the fold, no army will dare to stand against us." Rhaegon smirked at Aemond who was serving wine. He saw that Aegon wasn't really interested in being a page or any sort of learning, but Rhaegon forced him to participate in anything that doesn't involve pleasing himself.
"Do you trust these Martells, my son?" Viserys asked.
"I'll never trust anyone who isn't us, father, but the only way to build alliances is through marriage." Rhaegon said.
"That being said, I wish to speak." Rhaenyra said. She then carefully rose from her chair. "I have felt the... strife between our families of late, my queen, and for any offense if caused, I apologize, but we are one house, and long before that we were friends. My son, Jacaerys will inherit Driftmark. I propose we betroth him to your daughter, Heleana. Let them rule together."
"A most judicious proposition." King Viserys smiled.
"I agree." Rhaegon said.
"Additionally if Syrax brings forth another clutch of eggs, your son Aemond will be welcome to them. A symbol of our good will." Rhaenyra said.
"Rhaenyra." Alicent looked at Rhaenyras chest and milk leaked from her breasts. Once Rhaegon saw it, he immediately ripped off his cloak and covered her.
"Thank you, brother." Rhaenyra said and Rhaegon smiled.
"The king and I will consider this offer. Let us be finished. You must rest, husband." Alicent said as her face was filled with jealousy when Rhaegon assisted Rhaenyra.
"Yes." Viserys sighed.
"Aegon, help Aemond pick up the cups and bring the notes that you've taken to me when you're finished." Rhaegon said. "I'll be in my chambers."
"Yes, brother." Aegon nodded.
"I can take the king to his chambers, my prince." Alicent said.
"I believe you, but maester Gerardys will examine my father, and I'd like to be present." Rhaegon said.
"I've already examined his grace myself, my prince, and I do not see why a second opinion is needed." Grandmaester Orwyle said.
"Whatever it is that you're doing isn't working." Rhaegon said. "I wish to see the dosage of medicine and how much should be given. As long as I'm the capital, no one will subdue my father. From here on, maester Gerardys will oversee the dosage the king receives, and he will report to me." With that, Rhaegon walked out of the small council chambers with his father.
King Viserys chambers
"Thank you, my son." Viserys was helped by Rhaegon as he entered his room.
"Easy." Rhaegon slowly put his father on his chair. Once the King sat down, Rhaegon went his father's bed and got a blanket for him.
"I don't need the blanket, my son." Viserys said.
"You're freezing, father. You need this." Rhaegon covered his father with the blanket.
"The queen and the Hand, your grace." Ser Criston said as he opened the door.
"Send them in." Rhaegon said and queen Alicent walked into her husband's chambers as did the Hand, Lord Lyonel.
"I wish to be here when maester Gerardys examines the king." Alicent said.
"That's not necessary-" Rhaegon interrupted his father.
"It's alright, father. As queen it is her right, and I'm sure she worries for your health." Rhaegon said. He then looked at Lyonel. "What might your errand be about, Lord Lyonel?"
Lyonel looked at the King. "Your grace, I feel...I have come to resign my position as Hand of the King." Everyone in the room was surprised. "The episode in the yard this morning, my son Harwin, has disgraced himself, and every fishwife in Kings Landing will soon be telling the tale."
"Young Harwins outburst was unfortunate, it's true, but he's been expelled from the city watch, and that seems to be enough punishment." Viserys said.
"Forgive me, your grace, but it is not." Lyonel said.
Viserys then got up from his chair and walked to Lyonel. "You have served me faithfully for many years. Ten as hand. My eldest son and I chose you because your advice has been sage, unmarked by self-interest. Which stands in contrast to all others." Rhaegon noticed Alicent being uncomfortable.
"You speak kind words... but there is a shadow over my house, and it grows ever darker. I can no longer serve you with integrity." Lyonel said with sadness.
"What is this shadow? Name it of it casts such a gloom." Viserys insisted.
Lyonel looked at Rhaegon and the crown prince realized that Lyonel knew that Jace, Visenya, Luke and Joffery were his children.
"I cannot." Lyonel said, and Rhaegon sighed. He understood why Lyonel wanted to leave. He is a man of honor and he didn't want to be put in a position where he'd have to lie to the king.
"Then I can not accept this." Viserys said
"If you insist, my king." He said.
"I do." Viserys told him. "You will continue your service to the crown."
"Thank you, my lord." Rhaegon said.
Lyonel nodded at the crown prince and looked at the king. "I would then ask leave to take my son from court and escourt him to the family seat at Harrenhall. He is my heir and will be Lord of Harrens castle one day, and it is past time that he assumes his duties there."
"I don't think that's necessary, my lord hand." Rhaegon loved Harwin like a brother and didn't want to to see him leave.
"Do it."Viserys said, and Rhaegon looked down in sadness. Alicent left the room in frustration. Lord Lyonel bowed and left as well. Once Viserys sat down he looked at Rhaegon. "I heard young Corwyn defeated Aegon in a sparring match."
Rhaegon chuckled. "Ser Criston trained my brothers well, but not well enough to defeat my son. I'm trying to get the boys to get along. Mayhaps when I return from Dragonstone, I can take them all to the Kingswood for a few days."
"A splendid idea, son. I would join you, but I'm in no position to go anywhere anymore." Viserys lightly chuckled. "I only pray the gods spare me to see you acend as king."
"Father please. Don't talk like that." Rhaegon begged.
"Very well. I do wish to continue on that model." Viserys said. "I remember how you used to beg me to let you help."
"Yes well, these days I barely have time to-" Rhaegon was cut off when he saw Moribund in the room.
"Are you alright, my son?" Viserys asked and when Rhaegon looked at his father he saw a skinny man with a hole in the kings right cheek and also in his right eye.
"Father? No..." Rhaegon then looked at Moribund smirking, and then disappear. When Rhaegon looked at the king again, his face was normal. "I... I have to go." Once Rhaegon was out of the kings chambers, Moribund appeared. "What the fuck was that?!"
"You're just prolonging the inevitable. Your father will die and there's nothing you can do to stop it." Moribund said as he ate an apple.
"I can try." Rhaegon spat.
"You mortals are a pathetic bunch aren't you?" Moribund asked. "No matter. The king will die, and you will reign. A sacrifice must me made."
"Rhaegon, who are you talking to?" Rhaenyra asked.
Rhaegon had his eyes on Moribund who arrogantly smirked. "No one of importance." He then turned away from Moribund and walked with Rhaenyra to her chambers.
