I stared at Freda with wide eyes filled with regret and resignation. She had slapped me and it hurt but I knew I deserved it. The sting of the action lingered. It felt like that would be an everlasting pain.

‘Deserved, punk!’ Kai was grumpy as he mulled over the fact that his mate was mad at us.

My lips parted but not a word came out seeing how angry she was. She was heaving as she tried to get herself together. Even without looking toward them, I could feel Lyra grinning with mischief and Cisco staring, gob-smacked.

Kai chuckled with mock sweetness as he noted my thoughts. Even without saying anything, I knew what he meant. I threw away all this perfection because I was f**g infatuated with someone who would never match up.
