Mates 46
Rejected Mate's Redemption (Freda and James)
Chapter 46
FREDA WHITLOCK
I didnât have a response to her question because I had never really thought of it. Cole was a nice guy and he cared about Cisco and me, truly so why hadnât I given him a chance yet? What exactly was I scared of?
âItâs because we belong to only our mateâ Gia purred and I scrunched my face in disgust. Ever since she started talking, she didnât seem to have a filter for her actions anymore.
âFreeds, what are you thinking about?â Lyra asked and I blinked, shaking my head. âNothingâ
âSo?â She persisted and I sighed, âI donât have an answer to that question Lyra but I would say Iâm not ready?â I said, more like questioned and she smiled as though she understood. She did.
Was I not ready though? It had been years right? I could move on and Cisco would have a father if I met the right man. In many ways, it was the fair thing to do.
However, in a way, my heart ached when I thought deeper about moving on and I had no idea why.
I looked at Cisco as he played with his toys. He was so bubbly as he conversed with his army of cars he called the transformers. God, I recall when we binge-watched the movie series at the cinema when it premiered. He made me buy him every design bot that there was. He was such an insistent kid so
much that I wondered whose nature it was. Mine or Kaidenâs.
Shaking my head at my thoughts, I smiled when Cisco looked at me. He smiled back and my smile widened. It was filled with pride I couldnât contain..
âHeâs so cute,â Lyra said and I nodded
âI can see him having the girls in chokehold alreadyâ She added and I frowned, âDonât say such things about my sonâ
âWanna bet?â She asked, smirking, âHeâs got the looks Freeds. Just wait and see, when he gets to thirteen, allâs done. Youâre going to be a judge for the girls whoâd be after your sonâ
âI donât like that prediction, Lyraâ I warned and she chuckled, raising her hands in surrender. âOkay, maâamâ
Rolling my eyes at her antics, I asked, âAre you sleeping over?â
âOf course, where would you have me sleep tonight?â She asked back, smirking as she stretched out her arms.
I didnât mind her sleeping over, hell, she had a room here even though she would always want to stay in my room. I was worried about Dad. There was no one at home with himâ¦
âIf youâre worried about Dad then relax, I called the caretaker before coming over here. Heâs in safe hands, okay?â Great. Itâs been established that without Lyra, my life would be a mess. Literally,
I smiled gratefully at her as my shoulders slumped in relief. âThe thought of him being alone scares me so much that I forget how efficient you always are sometimesâ

She playfully nudged at me, âI understand and I feel the same way too. But donât worry, the caretaker knows just how to take care of Dadâ
âThanks,â
âYeah, youâre welcome. Can we make dinner now? Iâm hungryâ Her cheery expression turned into a grumpy one in an instant. and I let out a loud laughter that made Cisco look at me quickly.
âWoah, heâs like your very own mini bodyguard, thatâs so adorableâ Lyra commented, getting up and pulling me along.
âWhat can I say, he loves meâ We laughed as we headed to the kitchen.
âSo what about you?â I teasingly asked once we were in the kitchen and she stared at me with her brows furrowed, confusion evident on her face. âDo you have anyone on your mind to be your mate?â I asked hoping for a positive response even though I was fairly sure she had no one. If she did, I would have known.
Ever since I returned, I would stare at her and wonder why she wasnât involved with anyone yet.
Lyra was so pretty and smart. She was the whole package and I bet guys were all over so why was she not taken?
My thoughts were irrational, I agree but it felt like the best for her.
âNo, I donâtâ Just as I expected. A negative response but I was intrigued. Why?
âSeriously? Why? Youâre so pretty. I know you have lots of guys 11321

swooning over youâ I said with a wink but instead of a smile or blush, she held a serious expression as she shunned my question.
Feeling my questioning gaze, she muttered, âThat doesnât matterâ
I chuckled softly, âWhat does?â
We paid more attention to making dinner now.
She responded to my question after she was done chopping the carrots, âI donât want to get invested in a man who would turn out to be someone elseâs mateâ Her words struck a cord in my chest. I was reminded of Safiya and it left a fair amount of pain. âThatâs why. I want to be on the winning side at the end of everything between the man and me. The only way that can be achieved is if heâs my mate. Only mineâ
She added and I smiled. She spoke so passionately about love. in her life and I knew sheâd be a passionate lover. I hoped her mate would come soon. I just know I would be punching whoever it turned out to be for making my best friend wait for so long.
âThat makes sense,â I told her and we continued in silence. My mind wandered to her statement about loving someone elseâs mate. Safiya fell for my mate. She loved him. What if she didnât love him so much, would things have been different today? Would we have been closer like before?
Would Kaiden and I have been together and happy? The probability of that happening was almost at a hundred percent.
I sighed, but that didnât happen and here I was, alone and without a mate. What a gamble!
