#25 Sixteen Part 1 - Deag Cuid Deag

The Painting

There were no cabs waiting on the other side of the train station, but with no money to pay one it wasn't much of a loss. The cool spring air was welcome after being in the stuffy train car for the last six hours and I spread my arms soaking in the afternoon sun. There were no passersby in sight to judge me and I noticed Lyle stretching more subtly to my right.

I knew it to be a twenty minute walk to the storage facility which sat conveniently at the peak of the hilly town. Rubbing my soar limbs I motioned to Lyle for her to follow as we began our leisurely walk.

Surprisingly our walk was not as awkward as I expected it to be. Our conversation flowed away from the stresses of the night before and our business tomorrow – if you could call it business. We joked naturally like we had in the art gallery and I was again brought back to the thought that it'd been only a mere three days since we'd met.

Our conversation paused as we reached the top of the hill. Below us lay the town, and although the sun had begun to retreat behind layers of darkening clouds sections of its rays shone onto the town square. From the hill we could see everything and my eyes traced the winding brick roads that stemmed from the fountain and led through brightly colored roofs of townhouses and businesses. Our train was long gone as I followed the railroad back toward the way we'd come where the sky was still a light blue. In the opposite direction, towards the city, greying clouds advanced and threatened rain.

"Is this it?" Lyle inquired. We were twenty feet away from the dismal building. The green color that once coated the bumpy walls had faded even creating a sickly pale. The windowless walls looked as though they were crumbling as chips of the paint peeled a few inches below the roof.

"So which one are we headed to?" Lyle peaked her head around the main building to take in the rows of units arranged like obedient soldiers awaiting a mission that would never arrive.

"Shit." I flinched away stopping dead in my tracks. I didn't have the key. Or my wallet. I knew the main building held extra keys for when people forgot theirs but without a valid ID I couldn't prove I was May Ellis and without proving my identity, well we'd need nothing short of a crowbar to get into Unit # 16.

"May?" Lyle questioned impatiently.

"We need the key."

"Where is it?"

I pointed dully to the building.

"You can't go get it?"

Nervously I rubbed my silver locket between my thumb and index finger as I explained the situation to her.

"Plus it's not even nine in the morning. There's no way they're open."

A smile spread to her lips, enjoying my fraught state. "Well that really only leaves us with one option doesn't it."

"What's that?"

"Commit a crime." She answered with a satisfied hum.

Alright Incredibly short - my apologies.
