Chapter 6
Make me remember (to forget)
Logan
Chapter 6
"So, you got a motorcycle?"
"Yup."
"How did you pay for it?"
"I gave him my Rolex..."
"Of course you did."
"What is that even supposed to mean? And why does everyone say that?"
"Because it's such a Logan thing to do?" Em says before taking a bite of her burger.
Adams nods. "Pretty much."
I shrug. "Haters are gonna hate."
This earns me a deadpan from both of them. Emily turns to Adam, "Did he just quote Taylor Swift?"
"Yeah, I think he did."
"You guys are no fun. You know what? I don't care. Whatever, at least I'm the one driving a motorcycle."
"And I'm sure that driving a motorcycle will win you extra points with Jade," Adam sighs before frowning at Emily. "I thought you were supposed to be watching him."
Her eyebrows furrow together, and I notice the tiny line on her forehead. It must be from all the worrying she does. I swear, this girl needs to chill. For a split moment, I think of all the ways I could show her to have a good time.
I could take her on a ride on the back of my motorcycle. Or, get her really drunk and then force some TayTay Karaoke on her. I could also do other things... more R-Rated ones. God knows she needs it. I have never met someone as uptight as her.
"Excuse you, A, he's a grown ass man who should be able to take care of himself. B, I literally left him in the car for two minutes. It's not my fault that he has the attention span of a three years old-"
"Hey, don't be petty," I say, which seems to piss her off even more. I can't really help it, she's cute when she gets all worked up.
Adam groans. "Okay, okay, fine. Let's make a deal, you can drive your motorcycle only around here. No highways-"
"But the highways are the fun part!"
"No, they're the part where you die and Jade kills me afterwards."
"How about the mountain's highways? There are literally no cars there anyway." Or in this town, I mentally add.
He pauses for a second before sighing reluctantly. "Fine-" Before I can start partying, he holds up his finger, "Under one condition."
"Anything."
"No driving at night."
"Deal."
Emily shakes her head with disapproval. "I can't believe you caved."
Adam looks guilty, so I jump to his defense. "Don't listen to her. You're awesome. I wish that I got you instead of Jade."
He lets out an awkward laugh. "Okay, okay. I get it, I know my sister. But you're a pain in the ass too."
I smile cheekily before taking another piece of my burger. Maybe this isn't so bad. To be honest, I don't even remember the last time I had dinner with someone, anyone. My parents are literally never home. They're either working, or working. My brother is crazy busy with law school so he's never there. My girlfriend stops eating after three pm so that she doesn't gain weight. So yeah, not having dinner alone doesn't necessarily suck.
I notice that Em is eyeing me carefully, as if she's trying to figure out what's going on in my mind. Before I could comment, Adam steals her attention. "You're going to Qurna Sawdaa tomorrow?"
What the fuck is Qurna - something?
"What's that?" I ask as she nodds.
"Oh, it's the highest mountain peak in the Levant region. It's really cool if you like mountain climbing," His lips curve into a smile before wrapping an arm around Emily's shoulder.
"Em here organizes hikes around the mountains for all level climbers. She always needs to do a safety check before a trip. Actually, you should go with her!"
Holy shit, that would be so fucking awes- "Absolutely fucking not."
I pout. "Why not?"
"Because I need to be working, not taking care of you."
Adam nudges her. "If you think about it, he's a beginner too. It's the perfect way to test the safety of the trail you've prepared."
Uh oh. "Wait, that's not so reassuring-"
Her lips curve into a smile which makes my insides sort of squish together. "Actually, that's not such a bad idea. Adam, you're a freaking genius!" She hugs him tightly and I'm taken back by her. It's the first time I ever see her... normal? Unguarded? It almost makes me forget that I just agreed to go on a death trip.
My phone rings, interrupting my thoughts. Mar. Shit, I still haven't responded to her texts from yesterday. Adam smirks when he looks at the caller ID too.
"Shut up, asshole," I say, even though he didn't utter a word.
I walk towards my room before video calling her again.
She picks up after the second ring. The moment I see her, it hits me that I'm probably not going to see her for an entire summer. And yes, sure, she may be the reason why I'm actually here, but that doesn't change the way I feel about her.
She's it for me. Even though no one in this world understands us or our relationship, and as cringe as this sounds, I know that she's the one. Mar is just... different. She knows me better than anyone in this world. She stuck by me when I was at my worst. And I love her, even when she does something stupid that results in shipping me to the other side of the planet.
"Hey, gorgeous."
Her plump lips break into a smile and I look into her piercing emerald green eyes. "I miss you already, you idiot."
I grin. "Me too. I got a job so that Mom takes me seriously and agrees to let me come back sooner."
She wraps a strand of her blonde hair around her finger. "A real job?"
"Kinda. My uncle's boyfriend is letting me be his assistant."
"Yikes. I hope she lets you come back soon, I'm so pissed at her. I could actually sue her for domestic violence."
"Oh my God, please don't." Knowing Mar, she would probably do it if I asked her to.
"You can always come back and live with me."
I gulp. "You know I can't do that." No matter how much of a fuck up I am, I still haven't sunk to the point where I'll just quit college and depend on my girlfriend for survival. "Anyway, it's not so bad here, I promise. The work is really cool."
She rolls her eyes. "Whatever. I don't understand why you put up with this. Anyway, so, you know Mario, right? The guy with the rose tattoo next to his ear, we met him once at that bar in Soho-"
As Mar goes on about - fuck, I don't know what she's even talking about, I can't help but think about Em. Today was a good day for us. I think she may be starting to warm up to me. For some reason, the thought makes my stomach turn into knots.
