Chapter Twenty One

Forever Yours

After dinner, I helped to clean up and after we all sat in the living room, save for Miles' dad who had to finish up some things for work.

"So," Maeve squeezed herself between Miles and I on the couch, her form facing me. "Do you still have a little space for an extra bridesmaid?"

"Yeah I guess," I shrugged. "You want in?"

She nodded with a wide smile on her face, "yeah."

"Alright, if you're free tommorow we can go-"

"I'm free tommorow, anytime at all," she cut in.

"Okay then," I laughed lightly. "I'll pick you up, say ten?"

"I'll be ready," she hugged me. "Thank you so much," with that she stood up and went back to her previous position on the other side of the room.

"You ready to go? It looks like it might rain," Miles stated. "Though I'm surprised why."

I shrugged then looked outside the window, though I couldn't really see anything. "Yeah sure, before it starts to rain."

Miles stood up and reached for the glass of wine I had in my hand, I gave it to him and he walked towards the kitchen.

I stood up and pulled the strap of my purse over my shoulder and Dorothea noticed.

"You're leaving already?" She turned her attention to me and everyone else in the room slowly did too.

"Yeah, it's like it's going to rain and it won't be funny," I chuckled slightly.

"You know you're welcome to stay over right?" Beverly said.

I shrugged, "I wouldn't want to incovinience you so," I smiled stiffly. "It's fine, Miles will get me home before it starts to rain."

"Okay if that's what you want," Beverly nodded and stood up.

I began to make my way to the front door when Miles reappeared from the kitchen. "You ready?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "Thank you so much for having me, I had a nice time tonight and the food was amazing." I said to Beverly and she smiled.

"You're welcome back anytime," she hugged me.

I said goodbye to the rest of the family and Miles and I walked back to his car. He opened the door for me as usual and I got it, my cheeks heating up once again.

The car ride home was spent in a comfortable silence, the radio playing softly in the background. When I had gotten home, Miles insisted on seeing me walk inside my house before he left.

The door wasn't open so I searched my purse for my keys but a groan left my lips when I realized I had forgotten my keys inside.

"Isn't the extra key somewhere?" Miles asked when he noticed what I was looking for.

"Yeah, it should be somewhere here," I walked to the flower pot on the floor and shifted it to check for the spare key I always kept behind it and I groaned again when I noticed that it wasn't there.

"You're kidding me!" I yelled out of frustration. "I'm very sure Funke used it and forgot to drop it back."

"She's probably sleeping," Miles began to knock on the door and after a minute of silence I began to bang my fist on the door yelling her name over and over again.

"She no dey oo, she don comot." (She's not in, she went out) My gate keeper said getting our attention.

"When?" I began to dial her number.

"E go don reach one hour," (It's probably an hour ago) he scratched his head and I nodded.

"Thank you," I wove him off and he walked back to his house at the front of the compound.

"I hope all is well?" Funke asked immediately she picked the call.

"Where are you?" I was trying not to yell at her.

"Out. What's up?"

"I'm back and I forgot my key in," I sighed. "The spare key isn't where it's supposed to be," I added.

"Shit," she sighed heavily.

"Where are you?"

She laughed first, "I'm far and even if I'm not, I'm not close to over with what I'm doing."

"Where exactly are you Funke?" She didn't sound like she was in trouble but for her not to tell me where she was got me worried.

She sighed, "I'll tell you later but I really can't leave now."

"How long before you come home?" I leaned on the door.

"Like an hour, two tops." She said and I groaned again. "Can't you like go stay at Miles' till I'll be done? I really wish I can leave now but I really can't."

I looked at Miles and he quirked a brow at me, "alright. Come pick me up when you're done and make sure you have cake with you on your way back."

"It's not my fault you forgot your key," I could imagine the smirk on her face.

"I wasn't the one who forgot to drop the spare key back at it's place," I fired back and she laughed.

"Okay, I'll buy you cake," she agreed and I leaned away from the door.

"Later then, take care." I hung up.

"You don't mind if I stay at your place till she comes to pick me?" I asked.

"No problem," he shook his head and we walked back to his car.

"Sorry if this sounds somehow but doesn't Funke have a house of her own, hers or family?" Miles asked as he drove us back to his house.

"She does, but she just doesn't like staying at her mother's house, it's a long story. Her boyfriend isn't around either and though she can stay with his mum but she prefers to stay with me." I started, making sure not to give so much information but just enough to explain. "And she's still making a lot of decisions so buying a house really doesn't really fit into the picture."

He nodded, "I see."

"Yeah, besides she came to help with the wedding so it's just best she stays with me, my house is big enough." I added.

"Makes sense," he dropped his right hand on his lap, controlling the wheels with just one hand. "How did you guys meet? I don't think I've asked this question."

I chuckled when the first memory of Funke flashed through my mind. "We first met in Chicago at the Cinema and didn't come across each other for like a year, then we met again when we both landed in Nigeria five years ago."

"Oh, she lived in Chicago?" He stole a quick glance at me.

"No but she travelled there for some reasons, part of it being just to relax, sorry I can't tell you much, it's not my story to tell." I smiled.

"No, no problem." He shrugged. "She's older than you right?"

"Yeah, two years," I held up my index and middle finger.

"Oh. You guys are so close," he intertwined his index and middle finger of his right hand and held it up. "It's really beautiful, you guys friendship."

"I like to call her my sister from another mother," I chuckled.

Miles chuckled, "it describes you guys well though." The car came to a final halt. "We're here," he got down from the car and rushed to my side of the car to open my door.

"You know you don't have to do this everytime," I said as I got down from the car.

"But I want to, unless you don't like it." He shut the door and locked the doors.

"No it's fine, just not used to it," I said, trying to hide the desperation in my voice. I really liked when he opened my door for me.

He looked like he wanted to say something but held it in. "Let's go inside," he said after a few seconds and I knew that wasn't what he originally wanted to say so I ignored the voice at the back of my head telling me to ask him.

Inside his house, he showed me the guest room and asked if I wanted to change and shower but I declined his offer so he decided to go take a shower for himself and I was left to entertain myself downstairs.

After turning on the TV, I was about to sit down but a loud knock on his door got me to still.

I considered not answering the door until Miles got downstairs but I decided against it and walked to the door. I looked through the peephole and all I could see was blonde hair and an face that I was sure I hadn't seen despite the fact that I couldn't really see the face.

I held my breath and unlocked the door, opening it slightly, only the upper part of my body showing.

"Good evening," I greeted and the blonde haired lady in front of me deliberately looked at me from head to toe, at least head to waist and scoffed.

"I'm here to see Miles," she said with the same annoyed look on her face.

She was beautiful, her green eyes somehow shining under the security lights around the house. An idea of who she was popped into my head but I held my thoughts in and still observed.

"Who exactly?" I also looked at her from head to toe.

She was wearing army green jeans with a white T-shirt and black heeled boots. Her blonde hair was flowing down to her waist.

"I'm Nicole, his girlfriend."
