Chapter 11

Playing The Straight Game [boyxboy]

Farren made his way upstairs, trying to push back to shy smile that kept making it's way on to his face.

He didn't know what that little moment was minutes ago with Kaden and now was not the time to figure it out. He reached his room and dug through his mess of a closet, trying to find his swimming trunks.

Eventually he came across a bundle of them, all scrunched together. He decided on the salmon coloured pair for himself, before settling on a navy pair for Kaden.

He even ignored the fact that only a day or two before at Jesse's house, he had noticed that navy looked good on Kaden.

He slipped out of his clothes and into the swimming trunks, throwing on a shirt moments before he heard Kaden make his way upstairs. He opened the door when Kaden knocked, finding the other boy waiting with a boredom filled expression.

He handed Kaden the navy shorts and told him that he would be waiting for him outside at the pool, before making his way downstairs and grabbing the cookie dough ice-cream and cool ranch Doritos from the kitchen and heading out back.

It was around seven o'clock and so was still moderately bright. It was warm as well, so the pool would hopefully be okay too.

He set the Doritos and ice-cream down next to the pool, before slipping off his shirt and flip flops and making his way carefully into the water.

He walked slowly down the steps, trying to get used to the cool water which contrasted greatly with the warm air. He was only knee deep when he heard the back door opening, and almost immediately after there was a Kaden shaped object flying through the air and straight into the water.

Farren barely had time to register what had happened before Kaden was resurfacing. He noticed how Kaden used his hands to push his now wet hair out of his face. Damn that was attractive.

Kaden just smirked at Farren who was only halfway down the steps. "What are you doing?" He snorted.

"I'm getting into the pool. What does it look like I'm doing?" Farren replied with annoyance in his tone and a roll of his eyes.

"Well you look like an old man getting into the pool before water yoga at the care home," Kaden insulted him.

"Whatever Michael Phelps. It's cold okay, I can't help it."

"Well maybe I can."

Farren barely had time to realise what Kaden meant before the other boy bounded over to him, grabbed him by the shoulders, and pulled him into the cold water.

That son of a bitch.

Farren resurfaced, spluttering for air mainly as an effect of surprise. "Kaden you prick," he exclaimed loudly, "your such a fucking dick."

"Only for you," winked Kaden in reply.

Now that he was used to the water it wasn't that bad. He swam over to the side of the pool, prising open the top of the Ben and Jerry's cookie dough and grabbed one of the spoons he brought out.

He looked around the garden. The sun was only starting to set, so the house cast a shadow on the lawn. The light from the sun hit the pool, leaving a trail of shimmer in it's path.

He felt Kaden come up behind him and his muscles involuntarily tensed. He hoped Kaden hadn't noticed, and if he did he didn't say anything of it.

"Cookie dough, my favourite," Kaden said excitedly, and Farren turned around to face him.

Kaden looked so fucking good, his shoulders and the top of his chest glistening wet, and his unruly hair slicked back from his face, and Farren felt his pulse quicken.

Kaden reached passed him to grab the other spoon from the poolside, causing his arm to brush against Farren's, sending a jolt of electricity through him.

He felt his heart rate speed up even more at their close proximity and decided now was the time to move, before things could get any weirder for either of them.

He handed the tub to Kaden and ducked his head under water, swimming to the other end of the pool. He stayed under water until his lungs started to feel uncomfortable.

When he resurfaced he found Kaden looking at him with a smirk, the tub of ice cream in his hand. "What do we have here, Milton the Mermaid?"

He shot Kaden a smirk of his own. "But of course. They call me the sea lion."

"And who exactly are 'they,' may I ask?"

"Oh you know," joked Farren, "my fans."

"Your fans?"

"Yeah."

"So that's basically Jenny and Grace," Kaden teased with a smirk.

He just rolled his eyes in response. "Fuck you Rivers."

And to nobody's shock, Kaden's face lit up with his usual smirk and he shot him a wink. "Is that what you learned from your little movie. What was it called again.. Boys?"

Farren groaned, shoving his face into his hands. Was Kaden ever going to just drop it. "Are you ever going to let that go?" He asked, swimming back over to where Kaden was standing in the water, leaning against the wall of the pool.

"Oh Farry dear, surely you know me better than that. Of course I'm never going to let it go."

Farren just huffed in response as he reached Kaden's side of the pool. He reached across, grabbed a couple of chips from the bag of Doritos and started munching his way through them. He felt eyes burning holes on the side of his face and he looked over to see Kaden staring at him. His head was tilted to the side and he was looking at him almost.. curiously.

His intense look made Farren feel uncomfortable and he fought with all his might to hold back the blush that was threatening to make its way onto his face.

"What?" He mumbled uncomfortably, squirming under Kaden's stare.

Kaden leaned in closer to him, placing the tub of ice cream down on the poolside. Farren could feel Kaden's breath on his face, once again in the same position he found himself in earlier. Kaden was close now, so close that Farren could see all his eyelashes, the dark blue specks in his otherwise crystal blue eyes, the curve of his cheekbone, the small scattering of freckles on the bridge of his nose against his tan skin.

And his lips. His soft looking, full lips, practically begging Farren to kiss them. He felt his breath hitch in his throat. What was Kaden doing. He stayed deadly still, knowing that even the slightest movement could set off a thunderstorm.

However Kaden kept leaning in, agonisingly slowly, swerving slightly to Farren's right until his face passed Farren's own completely. He reached behind Farren and grabbed the packet of Doritos, before pulling back quickly.

He gave Farren an innocent smile. "You okay there Milton, look like you've seen a ghost."

Farren pulled himself out of his reverie, letting out a breath he didn't realise he was holding. "Sorry just zoned out," he said, faking a calm air. But inside he was anything but calm. What the fuck had just happened. Had Kaden done that on purpose, the slow leaning in, the quietness.

Surely he hadn't. Surely Farren had just imagined the whole thing. But for a moment he really thought that Kaden was going to kiss him.

And the scariest part was that for a split moment, he wished Kaden had.

Kaden shut the door behind him, before making his way out of Farren's house and into his car.

Farren sat in alongside him, both the boys rolling down the windows in the extremely stuffy car before pulling out of Farren's house and heading towards his own.

It was three o'clock on Saturday afternoon and the boys were headed to set up the party. If he was being completely honest, Kaden had actually just gotten out of bed half an hour ago.

Well, it was a Saturday. Who even gets out of bed on Saturdays, right?

He had thrown on his favourite Adidas sweats and t-shirt, gobbled down a bowl of Cheerios, and headed out the door with Farren, who had already gone to the gym, had breakfast and lunch, and watched a movie.

He leaned his head against the headrest and yawned. He felt Farren's eyes looking at him, and peeked an eye open to meet his gaze.

"God almighty," muttered Farren critically, "how are you still tired? You slept until half two. Half two!"

"Don't judge me," Kaden retorted defensively, "not all of us have the energy of a Jack Russel on speed at the crack of dawn. What time did you get up anyway?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.

Farren just mumbled an incoherent reply.

"What did you say, I don't speak mumbled." Kaden pressed sarcastically.

Farren just shrugged in response. "I don't know, four I think?" He said, but it came out as more of a question than a statement.

Kaden was brought to a standstill in shock. Four am?! Who the fuck gets up at four am? "Wait seriously bro?" He said, turning to face Farren. "What the fuck were you doing up at four in the morning. That means you've been awake almost eleven hours. Eleven fucking hours! Dude I haven't even been awake for one whole hour yet!"

Farren just shrugged in reply and Kaden couldn't believe how unfazed he seemed to be. If that was him, he would be making it his business to go back to bed. Fuck the gym, what's the point in even going if you're barely awake. After all, they hadn't gotten to bed until at least half one or two that night.

"Wow man, how are you still alive? Is it even safe for you to be driving if your that tired?"

Farren snorted in reply, looking over at him with a smirk. "Since when does Kaden Rivers worry so much about his safety. And you don't have to be worried about me being tired, do I seem tired to you?"

Kaden had to admit that Farren looked wide awake. "No I suppose not," he grumbled. "But if you crash this car I'm going to kill you."

"I'm shaking in my boots,"

"Fuck you," he mumbled in reply. Why did Farren always have to be so sarcastic? Then again he himself couldn't say much, he was probably just as bad.

"Oh and Rivers?" Farren said, slowly bringing the car to a stop outside Kaden's mansion.

"Yeah?" He asked, looking up at Farren curiously.

"Nice to know you care about me," Farren said with a wink as he left the car, leaving Kaden alone in his protest.

He sat there in the car for a second with his cheeks tinged red before opening his own car door and following Farren to the front door, where he stood with his hands in his pocket and a smug smile on his face.

He stuck his tongue out immaturely at Farren before taking out his key and twisting open the handle of the front door.

As he headed inside, he could hear Farren gasp behind him. "Wow man, it looks so much bigger than it does at the parties. Less people I suppose."

He just shrugged in response. "It's pointless, having a house this big. I mean we're only a family of three and most of the time I'm the only one home, so why are we living in a five bedroom house? It's pointless and a waste of money."

"I guess but like.. it's so cool man." Farren protested, putting emphasis on the cool.

Kaden was starting to feel annoyed now, like he did whenever someone new saw his house. He couldn't blame Farren, he was an overly excitable teenage boy to begin with, it was only natural he would react this way.

"It's a cool enough house, but I hate living here. It's a house not a home. And I don't know man, something doesn't feel right about living in a house with four spare bedrooms at the best of times when the homeless shelter down Jaycee Street is always full."

He looked up at Farren, waiting for his response and was surprised to see Farren nodding along like he agreed with him. "Your right man, I guess they do need it more. No offense or anything but it is a bit much."

But he was not offended at all. Quite the opposite in fact. Nobody ever really saw this from his point of view, so he was surprised that Farren of all people would.

If there was one thing Kaden Rivers was certain of, it was that there was more to Farren Milton than meets the eye.
