Chapter 34

Promoted

Their Fizz- Band of brothers

She walked over to where her boys were relaxing after the battle, Gene was handing around coffee to them. Flo sat down where Perco was cradling his cup, Perc was a little more sensitive than Johnny she knew and she wanted him to know it's okay to grieve for your friend, even in war.

"Hey Perc, how you holding up?" she asked softly

"Alright Fizzy, I just...just keep thinking he's here," Perc said glancing at her

"Perc it's fine to grieve and we'll always remember him. Look at me" he properly turned to face her "He was your brother, he was my brother and we're gonna win this war for him"

Perc's eyes glassed over as she gave him a hug. "Come talk to me if you need me" she said and walked over to where the 'spitfires' were sitting. "You alright boys?" she asked sitting at Penks feet and leaning up against them. "We're fine Fizz, saw what you did with Boyle, do you mind not giving us a heart attack," Malark said smiling, "Yeah we know it's hard but we would really appreciate it" Joe added but they were all laughing along with her.

Gene then came over with the coffee and he noticed his best medic sat there with a smile and dried blood and mud all over her. He shook his head and gave her a cup of coffee. She continued sipping her coffee quietly while listening to the boy's conversation. She watched as Gene trekked over to Winters and Nix and gave Winters coffee, the Col Sink seemed to kick Nix out of the conversation and was talking with a seriousness she didn't much like, Winters was nodding, but he wore a sad expression. When Sink left Flo shot up from her position and ran over to Winters, "Sir, what's wrong?" she asked. He looked at her and sighed "I've promoted to XO of 2nd Battalion, as you said Fizz they've promoted me".

Her face dropped and she felt herself fight to keep the tears in. Winters had been with them since they started and had been their saving grace on many occasions, he knew all of them inside out and cared for all of them, heck she didn't think any of them would be here without him. She tried to support him and gave a small smile "Well sir, since the moment I met you I knew you would make an excellent commander and i think you should know how much Easy is going to miss you" she replied slightly choked. Winters put a hand on her arm "Florence you are one of the best in 506th, it has been my privilege to know and support Easy for 2 and half years, but I'm not going anywhere, I'll still see you" he smiled slightly as she nodded. "Who's taking over?" she mused out loud, "Moose Heyliger" he replied "He's a good man, should do well" Winters gave a little pat and squeeze on her shoulder and walked over to where the rest of Easy was resting.

The weather was disgusting, Flo knew all about bad weather as it was the main topic of discussion most days at home. But this rain was torrential and was preventing them from pressing the Germans back. Flo was leaning in the door frame watching the rain from the open door, "This is stupid!" she muttered and kicked over a bucket that luckily was empty, "Flo what's wrong?" Chuck asked looking up from his letter that Libby had sent. "I'm just fed up, I can't do anything to help and at this rate, the war won't be over for another 5 years," she said flopping down heavily on her bed.

She was also moody because she was on her period and it was causing her terrible stomach cramps, but they didn't need to know that. "While I think that there is something you don't wanna tell us, we just need to be patient Floss, we can't control the weather and it's lucky cause otherwise, Hitler would have invaded Russia, then we would be buggered," Muck said coming over and sitting on her bed. "I know, I'm just, I don't know, restless," she said and started pacing again. The boys exchanged worried glances, she couldn't relax and that meant she wasn't in great mental shape or amazing physical shape, she was so tense all the time, she was still their Fizz but always on edge. As they had always feared, she wasn't taking care of herself.
