Lights out

The next day they were moving along the road to Nuenen, Flo was sat on a tank, chatting happily to the Tommy that was operating it.

"You seen Princess Elizabeth has joined the auxiliary territorials" the man called Alfie asked

"Yes, at least she's doing something, unlike her bloody uncle whose actually known to be a friend of Hitler" Flo responded

"Arg I know mate, he's gonna be up shit creek if he tries to come back after this" Alfie smiled to her

"You know it, where's he at anyway?" Flo wondered

"He's on an island somewhere I think" Alfie responded but before he could say anymore, Flo had jumped off the tank and had walked over to a woman with a shaved head and a baby. She knew what had happened here.

Flo took off her helmet and looked through her medic bag and gave the women some bandages, her canteen, her K rations and then she wrote a note in dutch and said to the women,

"Geef dit aan de boer op de volgende boerderij waar je komt, hij zal je helpen" Flo said gently. The women started crying and squeezed Flo's hand.

"Fizz! Fizz! Come one" shouted Joe

Flo took one last look at the woman before running up to Joe who pulled her onto the jeep he was in with Bill and Skip.

"What did you give her?" Bill asked

"I wrote a note to the farmer I met, asked him to help her. He should help, I think when he reads the note" Flo said softly, "Its so unfair, if it had been the other way round the men would be congratulating themselves on their conquests" she said harshly.

The men knew better than to try and talk to her. She needed to process, then she would be back to their Fizz.

She then day dreamed as she lay her head on Skippy's shoulder, she dreamt she was swimming on holiday with her family. Hopefully one day she will be able to enjoy time with her family without the overwhelming feeling of 'this could be the last time i see them'.

Flo was thinking that was the most exhausting thing about war wasn't the constant physical exertion, it was the mental battle she has to fight every time they stop or there is peace. 'It's exhausting waiting for death' she thought, that's what Flo hated the most, the not knowing and knowing that she isn't in control of who lives and dies. For the millionth time, she whispered to the boys "War is hell".

"Amen Floss" Joe whispered back

Half an hour later she looked up when she heard Malark say "Hey, get a load of Lt Brewer."

"What the hell's he doing?" Bill said

"Makes quite a target, don't he?" Skip replied

She heard Bull shout "Lieutenant" before she watched him go down by a sniper.

"Sniper!"

"Charge!"

"Clear the track!"

"Move it!"

"Come on, come on!"

It was chaos but all Flo could hear was the "MEDIC, MEDIC" being called.

She quickly crawled toward Brewer while the sniper was trying to hit her.

"Shifty take out the bloody sniper before he hits Fizz" Penk called out

But they were pinned, she was suddenly helped by Bull who was dragging Brewer into a ditch. And they order a couple of men to get him back to the CP where doc Spina is.

She then followed Bull into the town and they met up with Johnny and a few replacements. Then while looking through the town, Johnny suddenly stopped and said "Is that a Tiger?"

Bull nods then looks over to the Sherman, "That boys about to get hit"

"Come on Babe we'll warn them" Johnny said and the 2 ran off.

She watched as they tried to warn them. But the Sherman kept moving and the Tiger moved out,

"Alfie" she whispered

Then he blew up.

She looked away, then when she looked back she saw Buck move and destroy half a building with a grenade.

They then got the call to retreat, they were moving back when she heard "MEDIC".

She ran over there to find Gene looking after Buck who had been shot in the bum.

"I'm fine here Floss, you get back and retreat" Gene shouted.

She nodded and started retreating when she felt something hit her head and everything went black.
