Chapter 199

Trouble in Paradise

Chapter 0199 It had been about a week since I last saw Nicholas. I hadn't received any messages from him either. He disappeared since he threatened me and let me drown in fear for a week Our lives were no longer intertwined. It was just like how things used to be. If I hadn't fought that hard, I wouldn't be able to see him at all.

I was glad he didn't actually go after the people I care about though. People who were apart like we were should not have any more interactions. That being said, he didn't seem surprised to see me there.

In fact, he looked off when he saw me there. I got the feeling that I didn't look much better either. The bottom line was that meeting was likely something neither party wanted. If that were the case, then there was no need for me to pause or greet him.

His tall figure blocked all the lights overhead, casting a huge shadow. I acted as though I saw nothing. When I stepped into that shadow, I felt as though its darkness had absorbed every bit of warmth inside me. I shivered and hurried to get through that shadow.

However, when I was walking past Nicholas, he gripped my wrist. His grip was very tight, so I didn't need to check to know that my wrist had reddened.

He pushed me and had my back against the wall. His entire body was pressed against mine. His scent was just as aggressive as it wafted toward me. It didn't smell like tea. Instead, it smelled like a cigarette.

When he tilted his head down, that scent became more obvious, and I knew he had smoked.

"Nicholas!"

I reached out and put my hand over my womb. I also discreetly put some distance between us.

It didn't matter if it was the scent of the cigarette or the pressure on my body. Both were dangerous to me, given my current circumstances.

His breathing was even, but he didn't speak. The emotional pressure on me was on. I glared at him and was silently going all out as well. In a way, I was protesting without uttering a word.

"I had a bet with my dad."

Just as I thought he wouldn't say a word, he suddenly spoke up.

I was taken aback. I didn't understand why he was telling me about the stupid game between him and his dad.

Hence, my tone was hostile as I demanded, "Let me go!"

He stopped breathing momentarily. It was as though he was trying to suppress his anger and was condoning my unreasonable behavior. He asked, "Aren't you even a little curious about what the bet is?"

His slightly icy finger lifted my chin. His gaze broke through the tension in the air and found my eyes.

A stranger would definitely assume that Nicholas would kiss me at the very next second. Our position was definitely suggestive. If a camera was present, it would surely capture that stunning image.

Unfortunately, I was the only one who was aware of the hostility in his dark brown eyes. There wasn't even a hint of love.

My arms, which I had left by my sides, instinctively trembled. I reached out and draped them over his shoulders before I calmly asked, "What are the terms of the bet?"

He glared fiercely at me. A hint of pain oozed out of his eyes as he answered, "The term is that if you take his deal, then I will..."

"Have a test tube baby with Jasmine."

"Have a test tube baby with Jasmine."

We spoke the same words at the same time.

Nicholas narrowed his eyes and asked, "You knew?"

I shook my head and tilted my head up to smile at him. After that, I replied, "I didn't know. I just thought Daniel doesn't trust me that much."

I honestly found it hilarious and couldn't help giggling aloud. I then said, "Who would've thought that your father doesn't trust you either?"

The vein on Nicholas' forehead was popping, and that was the harbinger of his anger.

I didn't care if he hated me at that moment or if he was furious with me. Hence, I simply asked, "So, are you a man of your word? Will you keep your promise?"

"Are you saying you don't mind if I have a baby with another woman?" asked Nicholas.

He acted as though he had just learned of the truth. His entire body trembled, suggesting that he was wronged and was in pain.

He took two steps back and stared at me from a distance as he murmured, "It seems you truly want to divorce me."" I didn't know why, but his tone truly would have been heartbreaking, His dark brown eyes oozed heartbreak, and his voice was impossibly coarse. It was as though every cell in his body was reprimanding an irresponsible playgirl.

I couldn't believe that the playgirl in that scenario was me. I wondered if he had even thought about how hurt or innocent I was in the matter.

His family was the one who insisted on having an heir. They made it so that a woman I had never met in all 26 years of my life had shown up to steal my husband.

It didn't matter if it was Nicholas or his family. Neither gave me an option. No one gave me the confidence or opportunity to tell them the truth with my head held high. I was already pregnant with Nicholas' baby.

I was simply exhausted and couldn't fight anymore. Dealing with Claudia had already brought me so much misery. I had a migraine, and when I looked at him it was as though the room was spinning.

My lips parted, but to my surprise, I didn't know how to explain the current situation to let him know that I was more of a victim than he was.

I couldn't think of anything, so I figured I might as well just keep quiet.

"I will have a kid with her and will also do everything I can to protect Claudia!"

Those were the words Nicholas said when I was utterly destroyed and was ready to flee.
