Chapter 51
Marrying
Chapter 51
âPerhaps he does not like it but refrains from saying so for your friendâs feelings.â Matthew reasoned.
âHe might as well just say it. And Katherine mentioned that he loves crayfish the most. Now heâs throwing it away. I donât think he dislikes crayfish; he just looks down on Katherine for packing some leftâover for him.â Valerie felt a bit annoyed but quickly calmed down and thanked Matthew, âMr. Grant, thank you for bringing this back. Iâll take a photo of it and send it to Katherine when she sobers up. As for this necklace, Iâll give it to Katherine as well so she can return it to Caleb.â
Caleb wasnât really important to her; she cared more about Katherine, her friend.
She used to think Caleb was good to Katherine, but now it seemed his intentions might not be so pure. She needed to find a way to warn Katherine.
Matthew didnât have any objections to what she was going to do.
However, he was more interested in the food on the table, and after dealing with this mess, the food seemed even more tasty. He suddenly started, âI can handle spicy food.â
Valerie was left confused by his sudden words, frowning.
Matthew pointed at the dishes on the table. âI noticed you usually have some spicy food even in your breakfast, so I guess you like it hot. Feel free to add some chillis next time you cook. Iâm cool with it as long as itâs not ridiculously spicy.â
Valerie was momentarily stunned, not expecting him to pick up on her taste preferences when he always remained cold. A smile crept onto her lips. âAlright!â
He is surprisingly easy to take care of,â said Valerie inwardly, adding, âMr. Grant, donât stress about tomorrow. My brotherâs pretty chill, but he might ask a few questions. Should we rehearse our answers or something?â
âCrossâchecking stories?â asked Matthew.
Valerie chuckled. âWell, youâre not wrong. Letâs go over our story then. My brother will definitely ask about your family situation tomorrow. Answer what you can, and if thereâs something youâre not comfortable with, just look at me. Iâll find a way to steer the conversation.â
âOkay.â Matthew was cooperative.
âMy brother will also ask when we met and why you wanted to marry me. Just say weâve known each other for a long time, and you believe Iâm the one you can spend the rest of your life with, so you proposed, and we got together,â Valerie added.
Matthewâs face darkened, and after a stiff pause, he repeated with difficulty, âWeâve known each other for a long time, and I believe youâre the one I can spend the rest of my life with, so I proposed, and we got togetherâ¦â
We hadnât known each other for long. Besides, the
proposal was
clearly her initiative!â complained Matthew inwardly.
satisfied, but seeing Matthewâs stern expression, she couldnât help but feel a mix of
As Matthew repeated his words, Valerie was initially qui amusement and frustration.
Matthewâs face didnât look like it was filled with love; it was more like he was confronting an enemy.
Valerie knew that saying these words was quite a challenge for him. âAlright, weâll go with what weâve discussed then.â She was about to teach a few more sentences when Matthew interrupted, âI helped you. Donât you think you We me a favor?â
Valerie met Matthewâs deep gaze and was momentarily stunned, hesitating for a moment. âMr. Grant, how do you want me to thank you?â She didnât have much money, and physical labor was out of the question with her current condition, so she was anxious about what request he might make.
Then Matthew replied, âCook for me twice a week. Your cooking is quite good.â
Valerie was instantly taken aback at his request.
Thinking he had put her on the spot, Matthew amended. âIf youâre busy, once will
do.â
Valerie was stunned again before bursting out laughing. She never would have thought that Matthewâs condition would be simply asking her to cook, and he even changed it from twice a week to once a week, worrying she might get tired.
She smiled. âOf course, I can cook as long as Iâm not too busy with work. After all, even if she didnât cook for him, she had to eat herself. She used to be in charge of cooking at home, and later, when she lived with her aunt, she had to take care of the meals for the whole family, so she was already used to it. But this was the first time someone seriously praised her cooking skills. Valerie actually felt a little happy inside.
Matthew was also in a good mood when she agreed. He then reached into his jacket and handed her a bank card.
Cooking for him was an additional performance obligation, so of course, he should offer her appropriate compensation.
