Better Than Revenge [Unedited - 2012 Version]
Better Than Revenge
Chapter 13
Ohmygod. Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod.
You have got to be kidding me, I thought, staring at my computer screen in horror.
Christian Ryder and Sophia Hastings: Hollywoodâs Hottest New Couple?
Christian Ryder and Sophia Hastings, the stars of the upcoming teen flick, Kidnap My Heart, are Hollywoodâs hottest stars of the moment. Could they also be Hollywoodâs hottest new couple?
Ryder, 21, has assured the public and the press that there is nothing going on between Sophia and him. Sophia, 18, and her manager have also denied the rumors.
Yet, an inside source on the set of Kidnap My Heart reports that, âsparks fly around Chris and Sophia and they always seem to be together. I smell love in the air!â
Fans everywhere are rooting for Ryder and Sophia and hoping this rumor is true, but for the moment, Ryder and Sophia are keeping their relationship on the down-low.
âRelationship?â I read out loud. âWhat relationship? We have no relationship!â
You had to be kidding me. This was the most preposterous thing I had ever heard in my entire life. How could anyone think there was something going on between Christian and me? Besides nuclear war, of course. Or perhaps World War III.
âThis is absolutely ridiculous,â I muttered angrily, shaking my head.
âOh, youâre talking to yourself,â Tori said, mostly to herself as she entered my room. âYou mustâve seen the newsâ¦â
âOf course I saw the news!â I snapped, still staring at the screen with a horrified look on my face.
âSoph, itâs not that bad!â Tori consoled, biting her lip.
âYes, it is that bad!â I cried wildly. âLook at this! Just look!â
âCalm down!â she exclaimed, walking over to me.
âI canât calm down!â My hand twitched as I read all the blogs and articles on our ânew relationshipâ.
âJust try!â
âHow can you expect me to even try to calm down? Are you seeing this?â I demanded, pointing at the computer screen.
âWell, yes, butââ
âLook!â I screeched. âLook! âSecret Relationship.â âHot New Couple.â âLovebirds.â âOn-and-Off-Screen Love.â Itâs⦠disgusting!â
âItâs not that bad!â she repeated, shooting me a look.
âYes, it is!â I insisted stubbornly. âThis couldnât be any farther from the truth!â
âThatâs how Hollywood is, Soph!â Tori pointed out. âRumors, rumors, rumors! You have to get used to it!â
âWhy canât it be some other rumor?â I groaned, slamming my head on my desk. âWhy canât they accuse me of starting a cat-fight or something?â
âThis kind of rumor is juicier. People love this stuff.â
I sighed irritably. âThis is why I hate people.â
Tori rolled her eyes. âSoph, you wanted this. You wanted to be an actress. You knew what came with it. Now you have to deal with it.â
I scowled. âUgh, I hate it when youâre right.â
âIâm always right.â
âStop before I hit you.â I wasnât in the mood, clearly. This had left me in the worst mood ever.
She just grinned. âWhatâre you going to do now?â
I shrugged. âWhat can I do? The rumors out there now. We even denied them on Janet Wilde and that didnât help us.â
Tori groaned loudly. âUgh, I wish I was you. This is no fair.â
âI would totally hand over this part of my life if I could, Tori,â I told her, completely seriously.
âI know.â She sighed longingly.
My phone rung suddenly and I reached for it. When I saw the caller ID, I made a face at it.
âArenât you going to answer it?â
âNah,â I said, placing the phone back on my desk.
âWhy not?â
I shrugged wordlessly.
âOhmygosh, is it Ryder?â she asked excitedly.
âYeah,â I replied casually.
âAnswer it!â she shrieked.
âNo,â I said, giving her a look.
âSoph!â she cried dramatically. âYou canât leave Christian Ryder hanging like that.â
The phone stopped ringing and I smiled. âI believe I just did.â
She whined loudly. âWhy would you do that?â
âBecause I donât want to talk to him,â I said simply.
âBut I did!â
âThatâs not a good enough reason for me to put up with his annoying voice, Tori,â I said, shaking my head.
âHis voice isnât annoying!â she cried. âItâs sexy.â
âEww. No.â I wrinkled my nose. I wasnât enjoying this conversation, at all.
My phone rang again and I sighed in annoyance.
âAnswer it!â Tori insisted. âAnd put it on speaker!â
âWhy would I do that?â I exclaimed.
âSo I can hear!â she replied with a pleading look on her face. âPlease?â
âYouâre going to say something stupid if I say yes,â I pointed out.
âI promise I wonât!â
I raised my eyebrows at her. âReally now?â
âI promise!â she cried, nearly jumping up and down from her excitement. âPlease?â
I sighed. âFine, fine!â
âYay!â
I answered the phone with, âWhat do you want, Christian?â
I put it on speaker just as he replied. âWell, hello to you too.â
Tori looked like she had died and gone to heaven. âHis voice is so hot,â she mouthed to me, fanning herself.
âStop talking. What do you want?â
âI canât answer that question if you want me to stop talking,â he pointed out, feeling the need to be a smart-ass, it seemed.
âYou just ignored my request anyway, so what does it matter? Just answer the question.â I took a deep breath, trying to control myself.
âWhy should I?â he retorted.
âIâm just going to hang up if you donât,â I told him, rolling my eyes.
âThatâs true,â he muttered. âFine. I was calling because I need you to meet me at my trailer before we start filming today.â
âCan I come?â Tori whispered to me, poking me in the ribs.
âNo,â I mouthed back to her before replying to Christian. âWhy?â I said, my voice raising an octave. âWhat reason could I possibly have to have to spend even more time with you?â
âFrank said he needs to meet with the both of us,â Christian explained.
I gave my phone a what-the-heck look. âUm, last I heard, he was your manager, not mine.â
âI know that,â he snapped. âHe just told me that he needed to meet with the both of us.â
âWhy?â
âHow am I supposed to know?â
âYouâre the one who called me,â I stated irritably. âYou should know.â
âIâm just the messenger. Donât shoot the messenger...â
âIf I had a gun, I would,â I said, and I really meant it. Well, no, if it werenât illegal, I would.
Christian sighed in impatience. âJust get over here.â
âYou know, I donât think I will now,â I replied, smiling obnoxiously.
âIf you donât, then weâll just find you,â he told me.
âStalker much?â I asked, sharing a look with Tori.
âFrank was the one who said to tell you that!â he said in his defense.
âSure,â I said, rolling my eyes. âWell, whatever. You donât even know where I live. And I donât feel like dealing with you or your stoner manager, so Iâm going to have to decline your offer. Bye.â
And with that, I hung up.
Tori grabbed me by the shoulder and shook me. âWhy would you say no?â she asked incredulously. âYou shouldâve said yes! And brought me!â
âNo!â I snapped, shaking her off of me. âI spend enough time with him as it is! Iâm not going to spend any more than I have to.â
She groaned loudly. âYou must hate me.â
âOf course,â I replied sarcastically.
She pouted, flopping down on a nearby chair. âMy day has officially been ruined.â
I pointed to my computer screen. âJoin the club.â
She rolled her eyes. âQuit wining about that.â
I opened my mouth to protest when she interrupted me.
âHey, do you want some breakfast? I feel like making pancakesâ¦â
How could I say no to an offer like that? âSure.â
She grinned and skipped to the kitchen. I went back to my computer and stared at it in disgust. I was never going to get over thisâ¦
About ten minutes later, there was a knock at the door.
âSoph, can you get that?â Tori called from inside the kitchen. âIâm full of pancake mixâ¦â
I sighed. âYeah, fine,â I yelled.
Getting up slowly, I casually made my way over to the door. Whoever it was could wait. It was early and I was tired. I wasnât in the mood to hurry.
I answered the door and when I saw who it was, I immediately slammed it shut.
âDamn it, Sophia,â Christian yelled from outside the door.
âKeep your voice down,â Frank hissed from beside him. âPeople might recognize you.â
âHey, you know how to fix that problem?â I said to them through the door.
âHow?â Frank asked curiously.
âBy leaving. Goodbye.â
âWe didnât come all this way just to leave,â Frank retorted.
âI beg to differ, since Iâm not opening the door,â I said right back.
âSoph, whoâs at the door?â Tori called.
âNo one!â
She walked over to where I stood. âHow come you slammed it shut? I could hear it all the way from the kitchen.â
âBecause she hates me,â Christian replied.
Toriâs eyes went wide. âIs⦠is that who I think it is?â
Dear God, how did she recognize his voice? That was beyond creepy!
âNo,â I answered quickly, knowing very well that if she found out it was exactly who she thought she was, she would let him in, in a heartbeat.
âYes it is!â she cried wildly. âLet him in!â
âNo,â I screeched.
âYes!â she cried again. âCome on!â
âNo,â I snapped, standing in front of the door.
âSophia, youâre being totally rude!â she hissed. âLet them in!â
âI donât want them in our apartment,â I hissed right back.
She sighed. âCome on! Theyâre just going to keep bothering you!â
âI donât care! Iâll ignore them!â
âThen theyâll bother you somewhere else!â
âOhmygod, youâre the only one whoâs bothering me right now!â I said, rolling my eyes.
But she did have a point. They would only keep bothering me.
Reluctantly, I opened the door. Christian and Frank both glared at me as they strode in.
âOh, sure, come in,â I said sarcastically.
âWe werenât going to give you a chance to slam the door in our faces again,â Frank told me.
I just scowled at him. âWhat do you want? Letâs just get this over with.â
âI have a bit of a favor to ask of you,â he began slowly.
I looked at him warily. âWhat kind of favor?â
âA favor that will ultimately favor you, as well,â he replied.
âThat doesnât answer my question.â
He sighed irritably. âWell, I assume youâve seen the news.â
I narrowed my eyes. âYesâ¦â
âI got to thinking, since they are already sure that thereâs something going on between the two of you, perhaps you shouldââ
âNo,â I cut him off immediately. âNot happening.â
âYou didnât even let me finish,â he said incredulously.
âI didnât have to. I knew what you were going to say.â
âWhat was I going to say, then?â he challenged.
âYou were going to say that Christian and I should pretend to date for the public. And my answer is the same. Not. Happening.â
I was revolted at the very idea. How could he suggest such a thing?
âBut why not?â
âBecause I donât want to!â I snapped.
âName me a reason,â he demanded.
âItâs already bad enough that I have to pretend to like him at the very end of the movie where Emma and William fall in love,â I said, making a face. âI donât need to fake being in love with him at any other instance. Itâs not happening.â
âAt least consider it! What do you think, Chris?â
âWell, I donât know,â Christian began. âI guess Iââ
âNo! Itâs not happening!â I screeched.
âSophia, please,â Frank said, shaking his head in exasperation. âJustââ
âNo!â I snapped venomously. âAnd I swear to God, if you go the press with some story about us being a couple, you will regret it.â
Frank was seething. âI wonât.â
âGood,â I said, glaring at him. âNow, if you donât mind⦠leave.â
âYouâre kicking us out?â Frank asked incredulously.
âYes. now get out.â
When they didnât move, I resorted to having to push them out myself.
And just for good effect, I slammed the door in their faces again.
