The Doctor’s Truth: Part 4: Chapter 56
The Doctor’s Truth: A MMF Ménage Secret Baby Romance (The Truth or Dare Series Book 2)
The OR is my kingdom.
And, today, Donovan is in it instead of watching from behind glass.
I have to make the switch in my brain. I have to treat this like any other transplant. If I let my mind rest on the fact that Iâll be slicing open my lover first and my son second, I wonât be able to focus.
I go through my checklist. My blades are ready. My team is prepped.
I am Jason King. Top surgeon at Hannsett Medical Center. This surgery will go off without a hitch.
Except Donovan, I notice, is trembling.
âAre you cold?â I ask.
âNo.â
âYou can back out of this anytime, you know,â I tell him. âEven now. Just say the word and weâll stop. No one will blame you.â
Donovanâs gaze meets me. âI know. I can be ready and nervous, right?â
âRight.â
His eyes flicker away from me and land on my table of sterilized toolsâa handful of different-sized blades. âItâs not the procedure,â he says. âGoing under the knife, it justâ¦brings up weird things for me.â
âYou want to talk about it?â
âNot particularly.â He seems to think, then says, âDo me a favor?â
âAnything.â
âJust donât cut me open to the fucking Beastie Boys.â
Even here, lying flat on the operating table in a hospital gown with the spotlights on him, he still has the energy to rib me.
âIâll do you one better.â I nod to my techâmy hands are sterilizedâand tell her: âPress play.â
She turns on my music. Otis Redding fills the room.
âKenzi made the playlist,â I explain. âBased it on your records at home. She titled it, Donât fuck it up.â
Donovan laughs at that, a genuine chuckle. âLove it.â
The anesthesiologist nods to me. âWeâre ready when you are, Dr. King.â
I stand next to Donovan. âYou want to hold my hand?â
Heâs quiet for a second, and then pride gives way to need. âOkay.â
I lace my fingers with his. I hold his hand as the anesthesiologist fits the mask over Donovanâs mouth and nose. He inhales, and his eyelids fight it briefly before slipping closed.
I wait until heâs completely lost consciousness before I unwind my fingers from his and gently set his hand back down on the bed.
âAlright,â I say, calm and in control. âLetâs get to work.â
