Chapter 22

022

Lone Wolf (h.s au)

I jolt when I hear a shatter, Harry's body covering mine in a second. My head is shoved into his chest and I breathe quickly, his alert high.

"I-I'm coming with you," I whisper, not wanting to be alone.

"Climb onto my back," he says, my body climbing onto him. He walks downstairs and I see a rock on the floor, thrown through the window.

Harry picks it up and I look over his shoulder, the note a threat from my father to stop interfering with his wolves.

"Let me board this up and I'll be in bed with you," he says, kissing my forehead.

"O-Okay," I say, reluctant to leave him. I make my way upstairs and see something at the end of the hallway. I walk over to it and see something on the ground, a small locket resting on the floor. Once I touch it, it burns my skin and I drop it.

It opens when it falls and I see a picture of two people, the man unrecognizable and the woman very familiar. There's a piece of paper crumpled inside and I grab it, opening it up.

Anne, you will always be my love. – Jim

My jaw drops and I throw the locket, not knowing where it goes. The thought that my father had an affair with Harry's mother sickens me. W-What if we're related? What if Harry-

"Mae, you're shaking," Harry whispers, swiftly lifting me into his arms.

"H-He...I-I'm so confused," I stutter, the paper firmly in my hand. My eyes fall on the locket and Harry looks at it, grabbing it but dropping it as I had.

"Fuck," he groans, pushing it open and looking at it.

"That's my mum," he frowns, my hand shakily handing him the piece of paper.

His eyes widen and I curl into him, his hands pulling me into him.

"No," he shakes his head. "He's lying."

He carries me into the bedroom and I curl into his arms, his fingers pressing into my arms with how closely he holds onto me.

"I'll take care of this. We'll talk with my mother in the morning," he whispers, my head nodding. He pulls the covers over us and I nuzzle my head into his neck, his lips kissing my forehead as I fall asleep.

The travel to his mother's house is easily navigated, his head glancing over at me constantly. My paws run through the forest beside him and I know he's close to me for protection.

"Mum, I need to discuss something with you," Harry states, his mother turning to face us at the doorway.

"Okay. What's on your mind?" she asks, Harry dropping the locket onto the table. By the look on her face, she knows exactly what it is.

"Tell me what this is, who it's from, and why it hurts," he states, sitting at the table while she stands frozen.

"I-It's my locket. I lost it when I was younger," she says, my hand resting on Harry's shoulder. He visibly relaxes.

"I received it as a gift...from an old friend of mine," she tries, but Harry is swift to cut her off.

"Who?" he presses, her eyes saddening.

"Harry, it was a long time ago and I was a teenager," she attempt to reason but the intimidating male is ready to rage.

"Who gave this to you?" he grits, my hands moving to his shoulders and I slowly massage to calm him down.

"Jim Reynolds," she almost cries, my hold on Harry not lightening.

"And where was dad in all of this?" he asks, my eyes glancing at his mother.

"With his pack," she says, shame in her expression.

"You had an affair with this man while seeing my father?!" he yells, slamming his fist into the table.

"Harry, please," she cries, my arms wrapping around him.

"Who is my father?! Gemma's?! Because I know you two must have done something," he yells, jaw clenching.

"Des is your father! Don't yell at me Harry! Do not yell at me!" she yells, my thumb brushing against his skin.

"This is completely against all rules, mother! All of them! You're lucky he never found out!" he yells, my head turning between the two of them.

"What about Gemma?" he asks, persistent.

Her silence is all we need and my jaw drops, Harry pushing me off him violently. I fall to the ground and land on my wrist wrong, fighting the pain to get Harry.

"I can't believe you! This is fucking unbelievable. You've been living a lie your entire life and you played it off!"

Before he can go any further, I pull him out of the house and he shifts. I follow after him and try to catch up, but I lose him.

Harry!

I plead, his body no longer in sight. I can't sense him at all; his scent lost in the forest. Without any further thought, I run up to the house to find him absent yet again.

Whimpering, I shift and lock up the house before going upstairs. My body curls into the cold sheets and I let the tears fall, scared he's gone.

The three days after he left were the worst days of my life. I couldn't feel him, smell him, talk to him, or anything. The alliance doesn't know where he is and I'm beginning to worry.

As I make my way upstairs to sleep, I feel a huge pain in my side. I hear Harry's scream ring through my head and I quickly turn, running out the door and into the rain. I shift and run to the source of the scream, my head swiveling from left to right until I land on his body. He's bare, nothing on him as a wolf attacks him.

My paws pulse against the ground and I shove my teeth into the wolf's neck and slam them into a tree, biting until blood enters my mouth. The wolf throws me off and I catch my balance, growling at him.

His eyes are beat red and his fur is black, my body advancing towards him. My paw scratches its eye, his whimper of pain allowing me to bite the other side of its neck, snapping it quickly.

He falls unconscious and I rush to Harry, his pale skin due to his wounds. I shift, the coolness of the rain hitting me. Forming my hands over the wounds, he starts to liven better and I force his eyes to look at me. I grab his face and he swallows hard, my hand grabbing his shorts and pulling them up his legs. They were ripped off him.

Thunder is heard and I lift his torso up, his hand gripping onto my arm. He's freezing; his normal temperature absent.

I can't help but tear up, my mate's pain felt through me. I have to hold his head up and I call for the alliance, Andy and Liam's wolves coming into sight.

"Holy shit," Liam grumbles, the two shifting and lifting him up.

"N-No. Mae," Harry croaks as they carry him, my hand grabbing his. They take him into our house and lay him on the couch, my thanks expressed before they leave. I cover him with a blanket and cover my hand on the wound on his shoulder, his bones cracking as I do so. He lets out a strangled yell, his hand grabbing my arm.

He lifts his arm again and I push my hand over the clearly broken rib, his teeth clenching. I start to press kisses along his chest, his breathing calming down.

"H-He's gone," he states, my eyes looking up at him.

"I'm sorry," he says, my body pulled onto him. I worry I'm hurting him but he wraps his arms around me, holding me tightly.

"I had one motive and he's out of the picture. They'll find him soon, b-but his beta is after me. T-That was the wolf you saw," he explains, my hand taking hold of his cheek.

I stay silent, not knowing what to say. He did it; he got rid of my father. My father is dead and we're safe with the exception of the beta.

"I'm sorry. Please don't hate me," he struggles to say, my head lifting up to set my forehead on his.

"It's shocking but h-he's a threat," I say, suddenly feeling overwhelmed.

"Was... a threat," I correct, his eyes saddening as he looks at me.

"I'm sorry. Please forgive me," he tries, his sore eyes looking at me. It's too minor to heal and I feel bad.

I nod and he kisses my forehead, my hands pressing to his sides. His hands move to my cheeks and he sets a kiss to my eyelid, my head tilting to look up at him.

"I've been worried," I breathe, rolling my head to rest on his shoulder.

"You didn't even tell me what was going on," I state, his arms moving to tightly embrace me.

"I know and I'm so sorry," he whispers. "If I told you, you would have been so mad. I needed to do this."

I hold onto his hand and he shifts uncomfortable, his sore muscles present.

"Why are you so hurt?" I ask, his other hand brushing through my hair.

"Threw me against a tree and bit my side up. I'm alright though...because of you," he says, my hand curling and setting on his chest.

"I need you safe," I say, his lips on my forehead.

"As do I. I'm crazy for you," he whispers, my eyes closing.

I relax onto him and close my eyes, drifting off into sleep.

When I wake up, Harry is lying beneath me asleep and I carefully remove myself from his embrace. He groans and I hand him a pillow, his arms wrapping around it.

"Not the same," he groans, a small smile peeking onto his lips.

"I'm making you tea," I whisper, his eyes opening lightly as he smiles. I walk into the kitchen and smile when I heard Harry humming.

"Mae, you want to have a kid?" he asks out of nowhere, my hand dropping the knife into the sink.

"W-What?" I ask, looking over at him.

I watch him sit up and look at me, his head resting on his arm.

"I want to have a kid," he says, my stomach turning.

"Why?" I ask, confused as to how suddenly he's thinking about these things.

"Because...I love you and when two people love each other, they have sex. Then with sex, babies are formed, and I want to have a baby with you," he says, my lips curving at his explanation.

"I don't think right now is the right time for a baby though," I say, his hand running through his hair.

"I guess you're right. But you'd have a kid with me?" he asks, my lips curving.

"You know what I want," I flush, his grin cute.

"I'd marry you any day, you know. I just have to figure out a good way of asking you," he says, the mate pull we have allowing us to know we're not going to leave each other.
